Title: Number of penalties and how will it effect CU?
Post by: Cop at Lynah on October 09, 2004, 11:43:28 AM
A quick look at Friday's box scores revealed a high number of penalties called per game.  I know it's early and they are probably trying to send the message, but there is no way these games can have any kind of flow to it with the number of penalties being called.  I guess the early season will be all about special teams.

Clarkson/Providence - 25
Minn-Duluth/Notre Dame - 25
North Dakota/Maine - 30
Ferris St/Colgate - 22
Vermont/Sacred Heart - 22
BU/Miami - 21
Michigan/Northeastern - 17
Bently's exhibition game - 39

Just in case there's anyone who hasn't seen it:

Letter from NCAA on penalties (http://www.uscho.com/news/2004/09/02_008641.php)

Yes, we've heard this before....sort of.  Before, it's always been the leagues who say that they're going to crack down.  This time, the coaches, rules committees, NCAA, and leagues have all agreed that this is the right direction to take college hockey.  They all really seem to be sticking to their word - for the first weekend, anyway.  We'll see how it goes - hopefully the later start for the Ivies will turn out to be a benefit this year, so we can get a flavor for how the officiating is going to go.

Or it'll mean that the Ivies will be a month behind not only in playing games but also in adjusting to the new enforcement, leading them to take the 12+ penalties while the other squads are only taking 6.

Was that the number of penalties or penalty minutes?

# of penalties...most games have been in the 25 penalties for 50 PIM range. Fewest number of penalties I've seen so far was last night's UNO-UConn game, which was 15 for 30.

Is it jaded to assume that, like all points of emphasis, this will have evaporated by New Years Day

If it really does open up the game for better and prettier offense, great.

It could help Cornell because Cornell is big - physically - on defense. And offense. Actually, the goalies and the coach for that matter.

Seriously, smaller teams may need the grab / deter / clutch / hook tactics that the NCAA wants called. You don't see anything in the rules about nice solid body checks being outlawed.

Hey now.  When *we* do it it's just clean, solid, hard-hitting defense. ;-)
