Title: LP weather
Post by: judy on March 11, 2002, 07:54:22 PM
I gotta do laundry and pack my clothes. Anyone know what the end of the week weather predictions are for Lake Placid? Hell, how's the weather been like in general up in NY state? I may be able to take a guess at it from that.

jude. think yesterday and plan for at least that cold this week-end. am guessing that there might be snow come this week-end, esp. since we're heading up in the mountains.

Go to Weather.com and you should be able to get the forecast
for this weekend.

I know I could go there, I just don't always trust weather.com

So, you're saying that you are more likely to trust the ramblings of a bunch of hockey fans than the National Weather Service? :-)

I've been keeping an eye on the weather via http://www.lakeplacidweb.com/ the last few days. Right now... it's cold. (Shocker.)

The forecast as of this moment says chance of rain or snow each day through the weekend, highs in the lower to mid 30s. I would much rather have 30 and snowing than 33 and raining, lemme tell ya. But 40 and sunny would do in a pinch...

i haven't trusted the weather forecasters since high school when they would predict lots of snow and no school and wake up the next morning to find no snow.

i just wanted to know if it's cold or not and whether the temps have been consistent or if it's been as wacky as it has been here

According to weather.com, it's been just as wacky as Ithaca, but consistently colder.  Since Ithaca was 20s yesterday and 30s today, that puts Placid at teens yesterday and 20s today (or thereabouts).  Weather.com says that it's going to warm up and then get cold again, but what the heck do they know?

Wear lots of layers.  That way, if it's cold you'll be warm, and if it's warm you can easily shed clothing and not be too warm.  That's my plan.  And I'm planning for snow.  If I don't, it'll be a blizzard up there.

It can blizzard all it wants after we get there safely. I could live with being stranded for an extra day if I had to be.

Maybe, though I remember a storm in '97 when it dumped two feet on Albany and there was *nothing* in Great Barrington, just a little bit east.

Ah yes, I remember that as well.  That was the year of many accidents, at least three that I know of, including one I was in (as a passenger, not a driver) near Albany.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to get to Placid from Buffalo?  I know it's shorter taking 81N through Watertown, but I'm scared about the forecast up there.  Weather.com keeps changing the forecast everyday and the latest one seems to say "wintry mix," which doesn't sound like something I want to drive in.  I'm going to be pressed for time on Friday (can't leave until my midterm ends at noon), so I'm looking for the fastest route that will get me there in one piece.  Thanks for your help!

Don't go through Watertown. It adds over a half hour to the trip. Get off 81 at the Fort Drum exit.

Weather update: I have no room to pack my boots, so expect a foot of icy slush to coat the roads throughout the entire weekend.

(I am, however, wearing my heavy, Oregonproof coat, so it should be sunny.)

Geez, man, wear the boots.  Have you forgotten the first and most uncomfortable rule of travel (wear everything you can)?

As of approximately 11:00pm Wednesday, the forecast for the entire route from Ithaca through Syracuse-Watertown-Lake Placid is calling for all rain. I know some had mentioned they would prefer snow to rain
but. . .when it comes to driving, we'll take the rain over the white stuff any day.

It can rain on the drive up, then snow the whole time we're there, then miraculously melt Sunday morning.   How's that?
