Damn, when did the Germans pass the Swiss for #8 in the world?  I suppose it was with their performance in the 2002 Salt Lake olympics. :-(

The world rankings are done based on how well a country does at the World Championships every spring.

Not exclusively.  The olympics also come into play according to

http://iihf.com/hockey/worldranking/worldranking.htm

Swizterland (and Latvia) made the final eight in the IHWC ahead of Germany (and Russia) but it wasn't enough to crack the top eight (although Germany and Russia did drop below the US).  The rankings include the past few years, so the Swiss are still recovering from their poor performance in the 2002 WC and Olympics.

South Africa is ranked 38th in the world in hockey.  OK.

Except for the goaltender interference call. Brodeur should've gotten penalized on that one, not Konawalchuk getting a double minor. It might've disturbed me more b/c i'm a Rangers fan and hate Brodeur though.

Yashin is the Russian captain.  Jonas came in relief for Germany today.
