Title: [LAX] Cornell vs Navy NCAA QF Game thread
Post by: Greg Berge on May 23, 2004, 12:20:12 PM
Scoreless after 1 quarter.  Cornell is playing a great slowdown game, and has had the best 2 chances of the game.  Navy is very athletic.

It's good to see fox sports did a little better than yesterday's bargain-basement bitrate for today's games.  I thought I was watching i2sports. :-)

The size of the scoreboard in the upper left corner of the screen is driving me nuts. It says NCAA twice plus the score and time. During the action at the north end of the field, it typically obscures the goal cage. I bet the NCAA in its wisdom requires the word "NCAA" at all times to help brand its self-importance. There's got to be a better way. Let's see if we can find out who the production company is and let them know what a crummy job they're doing.

Game on, second half.  McMonagle has 11 saves, Russell (Navy) has 6.

Navy 5-3 on a great effort, 9:28 in regulation.  McConagle still looks great, but we need some goals.

Cornell had the chances.  Too many turnovers.  Faceoffs killed us on possession time.

Kessenich's comment about not turning players like Redd, Greenhalgh, and Collins loose earlier to try to get some scores on the board was very insightful.

Terrific effort.  They certainly showed they belonged with the "big guys."  An amazing season overall.  Tough to come so close and see it slip away.

As with the hockey team, this was not a team destined to go all the way. A final four berth would have been an amazing cap to the season and Cornell fell one goal short of that. Who would have thought, going in, that if you held Navy to six goals, you wouldn't win.

Got to hand it to Princeton. They made the comeback Saturday that Cornell almost did Sunday.

And fantastic that three of the four quarterfinal games were won by one goal.

Did I see it right that only about 4,000 saw the south regional quarterfinals?

Rules clarification (still trying to pick up the details of lacrosse).  Cornell got called for some kind of violation on the clear a couple of times in the second half.  I didn't see any obvious reason for the calls and the announcer didn't really explain.  Can anyone help me out here?  Time limit to get across midfield maybe?

Yeah... I believe you have 10 seconds to clear the midfield line, and then another 10 seconds to get it into the box.

There were also a couple of interesting dead-ball calls in the second game.  At one time, Syracuse won the ball when Georgetown failed to clear midfield in time, then lost the ball when they took too much time to set up.  And earlier in the game, Georgetown got a delay of game penalty for being within 5 yards of the Syracuse player.

Comments from the game:

Much better turnout by Syracuse fans than Cornell fans -- probably because their townies are bigger fans than ours.  Luckily, we both get credit for the 11,000+ attendance, even though much of that didn't get there until 3.

The scoreboard failure was a bit embarrassing.  Couple that with the fact that the concession stands hand nothing left but water and gum by the second game, and you wonder if Cornell was really prepared to host such an event.

Also, it was general admission throughout the stadium, but the side you chose at the beginning was where you had to stay the whole day.  At least they stamped our hands so we could eat lunch in Collegetown during the break.

There were less than 3000 in Virginia according to posts elsewhere.

Given how many local folks walked in yesterday, I suspect that the crowd here was closer to 13000.

BTW, the concessions were a mess yesterday.  Not enough of anything.  Hard to imagine they didn't anticipate a decent crowd.  Concession problems and the scoreboard going dark for the entire second half of the Georgetown-Syracuse game didn't make CU look very good as hosts.

Biggest problem to my eyes was the sheer number of turnovers.  In the 4th quarter alone, Cornell must have turned over the ball at least three times, and as it seems possessions in lacrosse are much longer than in hockey, a turnover is a huge deal. :-P

Navy seemed like a much better team overall: their possessions were longer, they relied less on the skill of their goalie and more on team defense, faceoffs, and forcing turnovers.  This isn't to say Cornell's isn't a skilled team, but they just don't have the depth Navy has.  (Lack of depth is a criticism I've also levelled at the hockey team, FWIW.)

Next year.

Cheers,
Kyle

Title: NESN delayed broadcast tonight, May 24
Post by: Al DeFlorio on May 24, 2004, 03:55:42 PM
Anyone who missed the game yesterday can see a delayed broadcast on NESN tonight, May 24, at 9pm EDT.

With all the credit deservedly given McMonagle, it shouldn't be forgotten that Navy's Russell made at least three big-time stops in the first quarter, or Cornell could have jumped out to an early two-or-three-goal lead, perhaps changing the complexion of the rest of the game.
