Title: Beer idea
Post by: jtwcornell91 on May 12, 2004, 06:33:01 PM
Here's a thought.  Since Dunbar's stocks Schaefer in honor of Schafer, we should try to get them to carry Lone Star in honor of McKee.  Can we get the "Deep in the Heart of Texas" fan club on this?

Forget Lone Star - go right for Shiner Bock.  I know they SAY it's available only in Texas, but I doubt that's strictly true...  If so, let me know and I'll mail you some...  ::nut::

I can buy Shiner in New Orleans, and I agree it's a much better beer.  But it's not as "Texan" as Lone Star.

Lone star is one of the nastiest beers ever made, right up there with Bud Light ;-) .  I agree, get Shiner Bock.  I used to live in Texas, Shiner is one of the best regional beers I've ever had.  WAY WAY WAY better than Lone Star....I mean Lone Star is what you give someone as a way to torture them (I believe cruel and unusual punishment is the correct term).

Shiner Bock is brewed in Texas, it's pretty damn Texan...

I prefer both Abita and Yeungling myself, but that may be because bock is not my favorite style of beer.  (Shiner Bock is better than Abita Bock, but I like Abita Amber better than both.)

Shiner Bock was my introduction to dark beers, and non-wheat beers in general, so will always have a special place in my heart.  It also fits in well in Texas because it's not all that different from a Mexican cerveza negra and so suits the local cuisine.

Lone Star is my designated bad beer (I feel every beer snob should have one that they drink for sentimental reasons; it's Labatt's Blue for a lot of hockey fans).  I usually refer to it by the advertizing slogan printed on the cans and bottles: Lone Star, the National Beer of Texas.

To sum up: Shiner is a better beer, but Lone Star is a better gimmick.  It's not like we drink Schaeffer for the taste.

Well, if you're a Cornellian, then there's a designated Cornell regional low-reputation beer: Genesee and Jenny Cream Ale. On sale, I think you could get it for $3.99 a case. That would be cheaper than buying bottled water or Coke.

Nothing beats the 99 cent six packs of Blatz they used to sell at the Chevron convenience...

This opens up other interesting possibilities.  Better suggest some good Canadaian brews as well, especially those from British Columbia. :-)

Again, good beer should be served because it's good beer.  For Canadian gimmick beer, the obvious choice would be Molson Canadian, but doesn't Dunbar's already serve that?
