Cornell up 7-2 late in the first half!
There's no free radio for this game is there?
At the half it's 7-2
Princeton and Dartmouth are tied at 5 at halftime. PU had a 5-1 lead.
PU 6-5
CU 9-3
6-6 in hanover now. Come on big green.
Dartmouth 7-6. Tierny calls for a stick check!
Illegal stick! Back to 6-6. 3 minute non-releasable against DC. Sheesh.
End of 3:
CU 9-3
PU 8-6 (still about a minute of EMO to go for PU)
5:05 to go.
Illegal stick was huge. under 5 to go now.
under 3:00 to go.
10-8 Red with 3 to go. Nothing can be easy.
2:04 to go, Cornell timeout. Been all Brown for the last 5 minutes.
Dartmouth possession down one! Time out. 2:55 to go.
1:15 to go.
:40 to go, Brown timeout.
:19 to go.
Brown scores, :12 to go.
:09 to go, Brown possession.
PU 10-8 under a minute to go. Penalty on DC on the goal. That should do it.
Cornell intercepts with :02 to go and wins the Ivy Title!
Princeton still has to beat Brown to share the title. They avoided losing two ivy games in a row for the first time since '89. They've still never lost to dartmouth twice in a row.
Up 9-3 in the third, had to hang on to win 10-9 -- what happened in the fourth? Did Brown do a good job or did Cornell collapse or a little of each? The stats -- faceoffs, ground balls, shots -- all favored Brown in the fourth.
It's really hard to say. We may have layed back because of such a big lead, but I think Brown kicked it up a notch. Either way it was scary as f#c%. I think you're gonna have to ask Tambroni and a few others what happened.
The one thing I can say is the 2nd and the 3rd we seemed to have possession for 85% of the time, and in the fourth Brown did. Faceoffs certainly played a role, but it also seemed like just a lot of luck.
Or maybe our boys just hate winning by more than one ;).
It was a beautiful day at CU today - and a long day of excitement and emotions for Cornell fans lucky enough to be here. The weather was perfect. Spring finally came on a lacrosse day.
The game was too exciting, given how dominant the Red was for the first half and the beginning of the third quarter. We definitely tried to work the clock with the big lead(two warnings for stalling in the second half) and that might have taken us out of our game. The face-offs down the stretch went Brown's way after we dominated completely in the first half. These close games may catch up to Cornell at some point, but it sure seems that this team has a lot of weapons. Someone different seems to step up with a big play all the time. A defenisve stop, a big ground ball, a goal to stop a Brown run, and Matt McMonagle making some terrific stops when we needed them. Bottom line, Cornell won the Ivy League Championship. No backing into it, no relying on anyone else. The NCAA Automatic Qualifier that goes with the win was well earned, whether the title is shared or not.
After the game there was a very moving (that really doesn't do the emotional impact justice) ceremony to retire George Boiardi's jersey. Andy Noel, Jeff Tambroni, David Coors (teammate and roommate) and George's parents addressed the crowd. The ceremony included the announcement of the creation of the George Boiardi Assistant Men's Lacrosse Coach position, an endowed position funded by donations since March 17. Current assistant coach Ben DeLuca is the first Boiardi Assistant Coach.
Following the game, the entire Cornell football team, in uniform for the Red-White game, was at the north end of the stadium chanting "Let's Go Red." During the ceremony, the football team and coaching staff came onto the field and stood at about the north 20 yard line, helmets off, in honor of a fellow athlete. It was a nice and classy act.
Next, at about 3:30, the football team held it's spring Red-White game. The format was fun, with the first string offense and defense Red Team taking on the White team with the rest of the roster, spotting the White team a 17-0 lead at the outset. Coming after what must have been a most difficult season for these young men, it was great just to see them on the field, playing with intensity, and enjoying the competition. BTW, the Red overcame the deficit to win the game.
After the game (see what I mean about it being a long day), Athletics held a ceremony at the northeast corner of the field to formally announce the renovation and addition to Schoellkopf Hall. Then players, parents and CFA members reconvened at Lynah (for which there was no announcement about any renovation or addition - thought someone might ask) for a dinner reception which, I suspect is still going on.
It was a great win for CU lacrosse and a wonderful day for fans and friends of Cornell.
