Title: It just HAD to be him, didn't it.
Post by: Josh '99 on March 08, 2002, 10:16:39 AM
Who's that in Faces In The Crowd in this week's SI, sandwiched between a softball pitcher from UH-Hilo and a XC runner from a high school in Nevada?

Oh look, it's Jamie Herrington, mentioned for his last minute goals on back-to-back nights against Cornell and Colgate a few weeks ago.  :-(

How do you figure?  I thought the SI Jinx only affected people who were on the cover.

Oh, maybe so... Couldn't hurt though.  (I'd say that I didn't remember the cover detail because I never get caught up in sports superstitions, but then I'd be blatantly lying...)

Speaking of the SI Jinx, Charles Barkley is on the cover this week, and the readers are the Jinxed ones.  Put some clothes on, Charles!

Not necessarily.  SI's once-a-year Inside College Hockey column mentioned both Cornell's goaltenders, and Underhill went down the week that article came out.

C'mon folks.

Let's admit it.  There is no SI jinx.

Of course there is an SI jinx.  It's the statistical law of regression toward the mean.  You are put in SI for doing some extraordinary and probability dictates that your next several accomplishments won't be as great.

Now, I'm not a superstitious person, and I don't think there's any supernatural force acting on the SI cover subjects or anything like that.

But if you read the article from that issue a few weeks ago (I'd lend it to you if I hadn't thrown it out already), it's pretty clear that there is some sort of pattern of bad things that's happened to many of said cover subjects.  I think the psychological effect of receiving that kind of exposure could definitely affect an athlete's performance.

And furthermore once one of these stupidities begin people who believe only quote the hits and not the misses.

Was there a full moon this week?:-D
