Title: More Stolen Cheers
Post by: Jeff Hopkins \'82 on February 28, 2004, 01:11:16 PM
I'm watching the Maryland-Wake Forest BBall game.  The Maryland band was playing Rock and Roll Part II.  The fans sang "Hey!  You suck!" between phrases, and finished it with "We're gonna beat the hell out of you...MU...MU...MU!"  I like our version better.

But that's one way around the language Nazis.  ::nut::

No "fuck/rough 'em up, fuck/rough 'em up"?

Nope.  Exactly like I wrote it.  TheY subbed "MU MU MU" where we do that part.

They do that cheer in quite a few schools around the nation (I know Colorado at Boulder does it for instance).  Don't think Cornell came up with that one.

What's the rhythm on the 3 'MU's?  I can't seem to hear it.

Ditto, this is hardly a Cornell phenomenon. Much like the newspapers during the introductions, there are plenty of other colleges/high schools that do the same. Hell, the KC Chiefs have been doing it for years after touchdowns. "We're gonna beat the hell out of you. You, you, youyouyou."

I'm guessing that's what the Maryland folks are saying, too.  "...and you, and you, and youandyouandyou" is the typical basketball cheer.  Although MU is a possible replacement, Maryland is actually the University of Maryland, which would be UM.

The KU basketball fans do that and point to the opposing teams' players.  5 guys a side fits pretty well with the cadence. . .

Syracuse basketball fans up the road do "We're gonna beat the hell out of you, fuck 'em up, fuck 'em up, go SU." They probably think they invented it, just like people at every school with some variation ...

You misheard the cheer...Maryland basketball fans sing "Hey! You suck! We're gonna beat the hell out of you, and you, and you, and you!" That's said as they point to various opposing players on the court. Maryland is the University of Maryland, so MU wouldn't be right anyway. They've been doing that for longer than Cornell fans have - I went to a Maryland game in the '99-00 season and heard it there, well before the "you suck" caught on at Lynah.

For the record, I think adding "you suck" sucks.

While I don't doubt that they got the cheer from CU back during the ECAC days, Northeastern's Dog Pound was doing the "you suck!" before the Lynah Faithful, and if the cheers page is correct they may have been doing the achapella 2nd verse longer as well. The first stoppage of play after a goal the band kicks in to Rock and Roll Part II and the Dog House claps along, then when it gets to the build up they rotate 1 finger over their head (per UNH, but UNH adds a finger for each goal, NU keeps it one everytime) and shout "SIEVE! YOU SUCK!", then do the 2nd verse achapella. It just dies out after the last sieve you suck, no "rough 'em" verse.

U-Mass does UNH's version of the Rock and Roll Part II sieve chant (one finger for each goal, long "sieve, sieve, sieve, sieve..." after the last hey!) but after the long verse add "rough 'em up, rough 'em up, go U-Mass!", and I believe they also borrowed the "oooooohh... cya!" cheer.

[Q]For the record, I think adding "you suck" sucks.[/Q]

Couldn't agree with you more.  [sarcasm] Hey, I have an idea...  We've only told them about THREE HUNDRED TIMES EARLIER IN THE GAME that they suck, so how 'bout one more time?? [/sarcasm]

Also, it was meant to be Sieve-exclamation-point, not Sieve-comma-add-something-else-to-the-sentence.

It can't be, "Sieve! You suck!"? :-P

WGBTGOOY only started at Cornell in the mid-90s and was imported from elsewhere.

"We're gonna beat the Gel out of you!"

That's the next change we'll have to make to keep the Language Nazis off our backs....

Looking forward to having lots to cheer about in March...

I suspected it might have been "and you...and you" but it sounded more like "MU"   Whatever.
