Title: Cornell Hockey Makes SI (sort of)
Post by: Pete on February 06, 2004, 08:23:08 AM
  There's an article in this week's SI about the Michigan/Michigan St. hockey rivalry.  In the article, they mention that one of the recent revitalizations of Michigan hockey was when a group of Cornell fans invaded Yost in 1991 to teach them some cheers! :-)
   The first paragraph contains the infamous Michigan "penalty-box" cheer, I'm sure their AD is thrilled
::rolleyes::

I'm quite sure that wasn't the reason for the invasion, but a side-effect of the invasion.  ;-)

We were also mentioned in an SI College edition.  It had an article about the Minnesota fans.  After that was an article that listed schools with the biggest lines for tickets.  The last school was Cornell.  They even mentioned that an unofficial list of people in line was snatched away and run over to a getaway car.  I don't remember the date of the issue since I found it sitting on a table in the Green Dragon.

Wow, Cornell athletics is dominating SI...The BB team was mentioned in this weeks article about the Yale and Columbia basketball teams.  The story is about the coaches at Yale and Columbia who are brothers, a good read.

There was a similar story in Thursday's McPaper (USAToday).

Are these articles and photos available online?  Or just in print form?

Sorry, should have checked for a link before.  SI usually doesn't let you read a lot of the articles on-line, so I figured it wasn't available.

The basketball story apparently isn't available online.

Title: Section in Michigan Hockey Book
Post by: Da Bear on February 07, 2004, 07:39:45 PM
While going through the airport in Detroit I saw a book - Blue Ice: The Story of Michigan Hockey  - which has a great section about the Red's series in the NCAA tournament of 1991 and credits the series with Cornell with igniting the passion for hockey at Michigan and increasing the average attendance at Yost Arena from 3000 to 6000 per game.

The rest of the book is great too.

[Q]The story is about the coaches at Yale and Columbia who are brothers, a good read.[/Q]

Hehe... one of my fellow cast members earlier this year is James' wife.  She was quite nervous when UCONN's first game of the season was the televised one against Yale.
