Clarifications which were published in the past:
Quote1) In the event of any tie involving three or more teams the tie-breakers shall be applied successively until one or more teams are separated at the top of the group. Ties among any remaining teams or multiple teams separated at the top will be broken by re-applying all tie-breakers starting with head-to-head record in each of the separate groups.
Example: Suppose teams A, B, C and D are all tied with an equal number of points. Teams A is 1-1-0 vs Team B, 1-1-0 vs Team C and 2-0-0 vs Team D. Team B is 1-1-0 vs Team A, 1-1-0 vs Team C, and 2-0-0 vs Team D. Team C is 1-1-0 vs Team A, 1-1-0 vs Team B and 0-1-1 vs Team D. Team D is 0-2-0 vs Team A, 0-2-0 vs Team B, and 1-0-1 vs Team C. The head-to-head records among all four teams are 4-2-0 for Teams A and B, 2-3-1 for Team C and 1-4-1 for Team D. Teams A and B are thus separated from Teams C and D and the tie-breakers are re-applied in each group. Teams A and B tied head-to-head so additional tie-breakers are needed. Team D won the series against Team C 1-0-1 so Team D would be seeded ahead of Team C despite the fact that Team D was behind Team C in the 4-way tie-breaker.
2) In the event of a tie involving 5th/6th place that requires application of the second tie-breaker, record against Top 5, the tie-breaker shall be applied as record against all teams above the involved tie. Likewise a tie involving 10th/11th place that requires application of the third tie-breaker, record against Top 10, the tie-breaker shall be applied as record against all teams above the involved tie. Similar actions shall be taken if the tie-breaker of goal differential against Top 5 is required to break a tie involving 5th/6th or the tie-breaker of goal differential against Top 10 is required to break a tie involving 10th/11th.
Example: Suppose teams A, B and C are tied for 4th, 5th and 6th. Team A swept team B but was swept by Team C. Team C was in turn swept by Team B so all teams are 2-2-0 in head-to-head competition. The tie shall be broken by comparing the records of teams A, B and C against the three teams that are seeded first, second and third. Suppose Team A was 6-0-0, Team B was 0-6-0, and Team C was 3-3-0 against the top three. Team A would win the three-way tie-breaker and be seeded 4th. The tie remaining between Teams B and C for 5th place is resolved by the first tie-breaker in which Team B is seeded ahead of Team C by virtue of a 2-0-0 record in head-to-head competition.
3) Any tie involving 5th/6th place must be broken before the second tie-breaker, record against Top 5, can be used to break any other ties. Any tie involving 10th/11th place must be broken before the third tie-breaker, record against Top 10, can be used to break any other ties. Once these ties are broken the teams that are seeded 1st through 5th shall comprise the "Top 5" and the teams that are seeded 1st through 10th shall comprise the "Top 10" if other ties require tie-breakers that refer to the Top 5 and Top 10 teams.
4) If there is a tie involving 5th/6th that requires application of the third tie-breaker, record against Top 10, and there is also a tie involving 10th/11th that requires application of the second tie-breaker, record against Top 5, then the following procedure shall be used: The tie involving 10th/11th shall be broken using record against all teams above and included in the tie involving 5th/6th. If this fails the tie involving 5th/6th shall be broken using record against all teams above and included in the tie involving 10th/11th. If this also fails the tie involving 10th/11th shall be broken using record against all teams above the tie involving 10th/11th. If this also fails the tie involving 5th/6th shall be broken using head-to-head goal differential. If this also fails the tie involving 10th/11th shall be broken using head-to-head goal differential. If this also fails the tie involving 5th/6th shall be broken using goal differential against all teams above the tie involving 5th/6th. If this also fails the tie involving 10th/11th shall be broken using goal differential against all teams above and included in the tie involving 5th/6th. If this also fails the tie involving 5th/6th shall be broken using goal differential against all teams above and included in the tie for 10th/11th. If this also fails the tie involving 10th/11th shall be broken using goal differential against all teams above the tie involving 10th/11th. Again once one or more teams are separated from any others the tie-breakers are re-applied in each group of remaining tied teams starting with head-to-head record.
All of these procedures are implemented in the playoff possibilities script.
lol that was fun. picked every upset except cornell winning out :) ::help::
Our record against teams ahead of us in the standings:
0-1-1 Brown
0-2-0 Colgate
1-0-0 Yale
0-1-0 Dartmouth
0-1-0 RPI
Our record against teams below us in the standings
0-0-1 Clarkson
2-0-0 Harvard
1-0-0 SLU
1-0-0 Princeton
0-0-1 Union
1-0-0 Vermont
Sadly, we're right about where we ought to be. Hopefully we can knock off Yale in two weeks and get above them. Then it will take running the table on teams below us and an upset of Dartmouth or RPI to give us a shot at a bye.
Wow, so the magic numbers indicated that very little has been settled. Vermont cannot win the RS title. And Brown won't finish in last. And even next weekend won't settle much either. At most, Brown won't be able to finish in 11th or 12th and Union will be out of the running for the RS title.
Here's hoping for the Ivy League title. We've got a decent shot at that too. But it will probably require winning all our remaining games (Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth). I guess winning out would help the a run for the ECAC RS title too (duh), but I get the feeling Schafer is looking to a playoff run.
[Q]I get the feeling Schafer is looking to a playoff run[/Q]
Sure sounds like it, from the USCHO.com recap of last night's game:
Schafer said, "Everybody has injuries, and you have to fight through it. We have to play a certain way, and we have to bide our time until we have a full roster and we can play our style of game."
In 97-98, coming off back to back titles, Cornell jumped out to a 5-0-1 ECAC record, then sustained a string of injuries and limped into the playoffs 9-12-1 in 8th place. They then upset RPI in a grueling best of 3 first round series and got to Lake Placid, where they lost to eventual Cinderella champion Princeton.
If the current standings held, Cornell would host Union in the First Round, then likely go to Yale for the QF.
