Anyone know if the game is starting late for some reason?

Edit: Ok it wasn't too late.

Edit 2: Ahh, due to the TV broadcast it started late.

Game started late because it's on TV, even though it's tape delayed.    We're having TV timeouts too.  Weird.

Cook got slashed last week and so is out.

pp killed.

Camera on i2 is so wobbly that it seems like this game is a Batman episode.

Now O'Byrne gets one just as 1st pp expires.  Cornell will be down 5x3 for almost a full 2:00.

Just :30 to go and still no shots on net by Gate.

Crowd getting pretty excited with two clearings and then a man-in-the-crease violation on toothpaste.  Another clear now by CU.

:20 left on the advantage.

Warning: Grumbling and ignorance follows:

Well I was getting some decent video on i2sports but now it is just a series of stills every 10 seconds or so. I wonder if it related to general internet traffic in my area or the number of folks tuning in? Now that it is between periods it seems to be better leading me to believe it is an i2sports issue. i2sports made a server change last week and I was hoping it would be better.

At the least, I hope they archive the games right away so I can watch them in a timely manner.

Moulson thrown out with a 5 minute major on a hit from behind.  I believe it was just a game misconduct so it will be able to play tomorrow.  However, now we have 5 minutes of penalty to kill and this game could get really lopsided.

theres no question this team needs a spark lit under its ass...im sure schafer will figure something out, of course moulson getting ejected doesnt help, but it doesnt seem like the lynah crowd is giving them any advanateg these days...with all these recent losses, an at large bid has fallen off the radar, looks like they'll have to brave the ecac tournament to make it to the ncaa's...

and its a shame, mckee only allowing 10 goals in 6 games? with one win to show for it?

ouch

Quick postgame tonight because the game had lasted a bit longer than usual (TV timeouts, and the fight at the end).

Review of the game chronologically.  Review included goals, booting of players.

Bitz got tossed for "excessive roughness", which they concluded might mean spearing.

At the end O'Byrne was DQ'ed along with two Colgate players (Silversieve and somebody, but they didn't know who).

Finally, Tony's 3 stars:

3) Iggy
2) his daughter (her 14th birthday)
1) Knowles (for taking the football job)

Hope tomorrow's game is better.

The other Colgate player tossed was Dave Thomas.  The bad part about that is that now I can't mock him for sharing the same name as the Wendy's guy tomorrow night.

Regarding all the fans that threw shit on the ice at the end of the game...yeah, I want to kill them too.  I really hope that those of you who were at the game and are reading this weren't a part of that.

And the continuing of the phone number thing...it's getting old, and I think it crosses the line into unjustified harassment.  (This coming from the guy who pornspammed a guy for writing a bad sports column, I know, but if *I* feel bad about it, maybe we really should stop that practice before it gets too out of hand.)

the shit on the ice has got to stop. throwing stuff at players, even if it doesnt hit one of our players in the head like it did, has got to stop. it all started with one person throwing a paper and i yelled up at the area but to no avail two morons then did it. then during the brawl toothpaste+paper+a FULL waterbottle that hit a cornell player in the head were all thrown on the ice. stop this you idiots.

as for the game, 'gate looked fast coming out but the game seemed close to even. cornell had  a hard time getting thru the neutral zone and getting quality shots. the second goal was what looked to me to be an aweful attempt at a clear by a cornell player which went across the mouth of the goal and onto a 'gate guys stick and into the net. i think it was the cornell D who did it but i am not sure. that is towards the corner i cant see. NEVER clear the puck across the goal crease.

the first goal mckee was screened.
i feel bad for david because he is keeping cornell in these games yet gets no goal support. reminds me of danis the anus before brown was good.

hansen called some touchy penalties which were moronic. the spear was hidden from view but it had to be that or butt-ending b/c no one fell. anyone get a good look at moulson's hit? seemed like the guy was sideways when he got hit but again that was the opposite end of the ice.

what a frustrating night. what is with the loser 'gate scratched players threatening those of us in section A with physical violence? ::twitch::

also

cornell had 24 minutes of MINOR penalties called on them = more than a period of powerplay for 'gate

this of course does not include the 10 minutes and the brawl...

lastly,

anyone tape the game? i would love ot see replays of the majors that were called. :)

Good job to Schafer for putting Vartessian, O'Byrne, Iggulden, Hornby, and Pajerski onto the ice at the end of the game.  The ref lost total control of the game and Schafer can't speak out against the refs then at least he can make them really frustrated and angry.

This was probably the worst officiated game I have ever seen.  Though we lost, we cannot be blamed.

Will anyone be suspsended for tomorrow's game?  I know that O'Byrne and Bitz both got Game Disqualifications, does this mean that they will be suspended.  Does anyone with a game misconduct get suspended.  That would mean O'Byrne, Bitz, Moulson, Hynes would get suspended.

Also, what happened to Cam Abbott and Charlie Cook?  Are they injured?

Finally, Iggulden played amazing on the penalty kill.  I really think if he was given more ice time on even strength he can be a great player.  Too bad it is his senior year though.

McKee is awesome!!!!!!!!

Wow...............................................
This whole game was a MESS and a waist of time.. wtf is up with our team? I agree that expecting as much as last year is a shitty thought.. but it doesn't even look like we're trying. We look like a freakin' highschool team for god sakes. We've got players MISSING PASSES, passing the freakin' puck a billion times with NO SHOTS.. come on guys, you've heard it before, but THINK ABOUT IT. IN ORDER TO SCORE A GOAL YOU NEED TO FREAKIN' SHOOT AT THE NET. And what is with this dumping the puck in the corner? Even better, dumping the puck in the corner, then leaving to switch lines?? Then we've got one of our players, skating in the middle of our zone, no one is even around him and OOPS he falls down. What the hell? What is with this sloppy play? Where's the motivation?
And then those REFFS! How freakin' mature of them to act this way after Coach's comments. It's like it was freakin' fun-n-games for those two gay lovers. "Oooh Mike thinks the players are getting injured? Well let's just throw all his players off the ice and show him". BULLSHIT. Then, we've got Byron Bitz, who fricken bumps into the pussy excuse of a hockey player, the reff sees, and OH MY FREAKIN GOD LET'S THROW HIM OFF THE ICE. What the HELL. And then the whole Moulson thing.. I DIDN'T SEE HIM DO ANYTHING WRONG! So Byron gets sent out of the game, meanwhile, three minutes later, some asshole on Colgate starts throwing punchs at one our players, BUT WHERE THE HELL IS THE CALL ON THAT?! And then left and right, there's many bullshit calls on Cornell, but only once in a freakin' blue moon does perfect Colgate get sent to the box. All of it is bullshit. One of our goals could have been saved if the reff didn't make such piss ass calls. One of the reasons we lost the game? ASK HANSEN.

I hope our team is PISSED. We need some thinking, some sleep, and some FREAKIN MOTIVATION. TOMORROW THEY BEST KICK SOME COLGATE ASS.

:-) Good Night Everyone :-)

PS: I'd like to say that McKee is freakin' awesome and I WORSHIP HIM!!! He played tremendously, and I have the greatest amount of sympathy for him having to deal with the pressure, and having a shitty team play in front of him. (Okay we're not shitty, but we're not playing up to potential, and we're leaving it up to poor Dave with keeping us in the game. Keep up the good work buddy, I'm here for ya 100%)

The only positive I can draw from this game is that the crowd actually got into it.  Despite the deflating goal off a turnover, we really seemed to get that place rocking each time we killed off penalties.  Mckee really kept us in there...it's too bad we just didn't have the finishing touch.

I don't know who threw those bottles, but it was totally a "monkey see, monkey do" situation.  One person let loose, and a few more morons joined in.  Considering that plenty of fans had bottles in their posession, I'm actually glad that more weren't thrown on the ice due it frustration.  I guess the Colgate fans didn't understand that responding to a "safety school" chant with "scoreboard" just doesn't work.  That's the last card we can pull once we've lost to a team like this.  By the way, I didn't know the Golden Girls had grandchildren attending Colgate.

Tonight the "frustrated" chant goes out to us.  Schafer criticized the refs and Hansen TRIED to call a tight game.  The penalties clearly hurt us a lot more, but with the exception of a few calls the game was called tight and close to fair.
I was near the Moulson hit and don't think it should have been a penalty or toss.  It looked like Matt came full force and hit the guy in the side and he spun around face first.  Maybe Matt went off his feet (I didn't notice) and that's why he got the harsh call.
I wish that we could exhibit more class in the face of defeat.  The bottle throwing, the players going out to fight just shows a high level of frustration and deflates from the sport.  Just end the game hard and beat them tomorrow at 'gate.  That's just my opinion.  I don't want us to be like the Hahvahd students who flipped us off and threw bottles at us a few weeks ago.  We could show more class, but we have meatheads with tickets so there is nothing we can do about that.  Overall I see students losing privileges in the future because of all the bottle throwing.  Its safe to say that if you are reading this you are not the problem, so the last minute of your life has been a waste. Sorry.
Alex

Close to fair?? You've gotta be kidding... even the penalties against Colgate were bull. I understand wanting to call a tight game, there was a penalty against Colgate that happened who two guys pretty much just bumped.

Hansen lost control of this game because there was no rhyme or reason to his calls, when players don't know what they can and can't get away with, they just hit harder, figuring they might get away with some.

Calling 3 penalties in a row on us in the first? including 1:50 of 5 on 3... come on. You don't run a good game by being an asswipe, I'm sorry.

that was a frustrating game from top to bottom. i mean firstly, hansen, he was terrible. i ran home and caught the tape delay of the third period where they replayed moulson's hit and where bitz's "penalty" actually happened. moulson hit the 'gate player in the side whose momentum spun him face first into the boards. moulson even looked like he was pulling up to avoid contact to the head or something like that. and bitz's was even worse. the 'gate player punched bitz after the whistle to which byron responded by punching backwards. this happened to be with the top hand on his stick so hansen calls some sort of spearing i guess, though it was announced as unnecessary roughness.

the reason it's so frustrating is because we've had some stellar goaltending for a couple games now and one win to show for it. add to that the fact that lynah was as loud as i've heard it all year tonight. during that 5 on 3 in the first you couldn't even hear yourself think. to me i just couldn't see an extra gear from the team. i know losing some big players and worrying about the refing hurts a team, but we've seen many teams this year come into lynah and turn it up when they need to. i have yet to really see that fire from this team.

i think almost everyone here would agree with me that that is one of the more frustrating things to watch this year.

Anyone who got a DQ will be suspended.  Anyone with a Game Misc will be eligible.

So Bitz, O'Byrne, Silverthorn and Thomas will all be gone today.

Cam had a concussion.  Charlie was recovering from a slash.

I saw the 3rd preiod on tv when I got home, and the call against Bitz was absolutely rediculous.  If he did spear someone, I guess I need glasses.  He shoved the colgate palyer on the shoulder, but that happens after damn play.  If he had gotten a 2 minute penelty it would have been a terrible call, but a game DQ?!  I was almost too dumbfounded to be pissed, but that didn't last long.

The Moulson hit at least looked bad, I can't blame the ref for calling that one.

At least the womens bball team had an exciting OT win over Harvard, that was great to watch between periods, it somewhat salvaged the evening.

Gimme a break, Bitz butt-ended the guy, I was sitting at the top of Section O (not because Im a Colgate fan, but because its the only place I could get tickets) and I saw the butt-end into the gut of the Colgate player.  Whether he punched him or not, dont do that stupid stuff, and especially not right in front of the ref.

Is butt-ending an automatic DQ?  I thought those sorts of egregious fouls were usually 5+a game misconduct.

yes, i think so.  butt ending  is an automatic DQ.  But, Bitz was actually given the penalty for "excessive roughness" I think, which is also an automatic DQ (http://www.ncaa.org/library/rules/2004/2004_ice_hockey_rules.pdf).

i just can't call the officiating fair last. i agree some of the calls against 'gate weren't even really penalties. what that shows me is that these were make up calls. anytime you have to throw make up calls out there you've let the game get out of hand already.

for instance hansen calls a touch penalty on glover in the first. then o'byrne boards some guy and you have to call it. so don't call the little foul in the first place, let the guys play. now cornell is down two men when it should really only have been one.

and some of 'gate's penaties came during cornell penalty kills negating any man advantage, including the last powerplay a whoping 5.7 seconds of a 5 minute major that amounted to the 7th of the 0 for 7

If it was, as you say, a blatant butt-end in front of Hansen, then why didn't he call it butt-ending?

gee, great point.  maybe the ref saw Bitz being excessively rough instead of butt-ending.  maybe there is a blurry line between excessive roughness and buttending, ya think? it really matters, doesnt it?

Thanks for the input, I guess a differnent view would have helped.  Time Warner Sports needs one of those 360 degree cameras like they have on monday night football. It's nice to know it was at least a legit call.

there isn't a blurry line at all, in fact it's quite distinct. If it was butt-ending, he should call it that, because "excessive roughness" can cover anything. maybe hansen wanted to impress the NCAA with his knowledge of obscure penalties  ::yark::

perhaps I am reading the rules wrong, but the only penalty listed for excessive roughness is disqualification. Does a DQ automatically include a 5 minute major? if it doesn't, Hansen did not follow the rulebook and should have called a buttending.

Title: Re: Friday Game Thread: Cornell 0 vs. Colgate 2 Final
Post by: Beav on January 31, 2004, 04:35:38 PM
yes, a DQ automatically includes a major (pg. 36).

as far as the excessive roughness vs. butt-ending goes, i think it is completely referee discretion.  I can think of 2 cases where you might call excessive roughness during a butt-end.  1 - Excessive roughness implies an intent to injure, whereas butt-ending doesnt necessarily.  2 - If there is other action in addition to a butt-end, like a punch or something.
There are more cases i'm sure.

The point is, the call was legit.   I dont think Bitz meant to do it, but in any case it wasnt a bad call in my opinon.
