Title: Cornell alumni in the pros: Jan 2004
Post by: Section A on January 09, 2004, 02:05:04 PM
Since the other thread was getting kind of long, I thought I'd go ahead (as requested) and make a new one that's guaranteed by the "month limit" not to be as long :-)

Last night, my girlfriend and I went to the ECHL game between the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and the Dayton Bombers here in Dayton. It was pretty cool seeing Paolini play; he wears #13 and is a starter. Atlantic City has the best winning percentage in the league (with 45 points through 32 games, good for a 22-9-1 record), so I suppose the fact that he starts for them is even more impressive. He is also on the #1 power play unit. So anyway, Atlantic City won the game 5-2 and he had a goal and an assist. The assist was the primary assist on the first goal of the game, a power play goal. And he scored halfway through the second to extend the lead at the time to 4-1 with a quick turn around shot from the slot. Here's where you can see his stats: http://www.boardwalkbullies.com/stats03.txt
He has 10 goals and 15 assists through 32 games.

Elsewhere in the ECHL, it looks like Matt Underhill has been seeing SOME time in net after all, though not with the best results. He is 3-8-1, with a 3.61 GAA and an .888 save percentage. He started two games last week and lost both, by scores of 3-1 (ENG) and 5-4. Mark McRae, by the way, had an assist in one of those games (and has 17 points in 29 games).
If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, they give you updated stats on each ECHL team: http://echl.com/statistics.shtml

Nothing in the AHL this week; of course, Lenny/JMP and Springfield, Baby and Chicago, and Murray and Cleveland each have 2 games this weekend. I wonder if any of them will get called up this season. As good as Lenny has been, the goaltending for the Coyotes has been amazing lately, with Boucher setting an NHL record with FOUR consecutive shutouts!

Joe finished third in the All-Star game voting for Eastern Conference center.  I suspect this means nothing since he didn't win.

Leafs were buried last night by Ottawa.:`(

Friday night, Pelletier and the Springfield Falcons were 4 seconds away from winning the game 2-1 before Philadelphia scored an extra attacker goal and then proceeded to win the game on a power play goal in overtime. JMP had 34 saves in the 3-2 loss.

Also, last night, Doug Murray scored the first goal of the game as Cleveland beat Hamilton (and Yale alum Chris Higgins) 4-3 in overtime. And in the ECHL, Paolini continues to rack up the points with an assist last night in a 5-1 Atlantic City win over Roanoke.

Saturday night, Pelletier stopped 34 of 36 shots as Springfield came from behind, scoring an extra-attacker goal in the final minute of the third period to come away with a 2-2 tie against Providence. I'd imagine that, assuming he's healthy, LeNeveu will start Wednesday at Worcester. I think I remember someone mentioning that game in the past; anyone going?

Murray had a goal for the second straight night, but while Cleveland won in OT on Friday, they lost in OT on Saturday, 4-3 to Grand Rapids. Murray's goal was on the PP and, at the time (16:30 of the 2nd period), it tied the game at 2-2.

And in the ECHL this weekend, Matt Underhill had two really impressive outings. On Saturday night, he had his first good game in a LONG time, stopping 37 of 39 shots in a 4-2 win. And then he topped that on Sunday, stopping ALL 42 shots that came his way in a 2-0 shutout win. I believe that was his first shutout of the season.

LeNeveu has been named one of the 45 top AHL prospects... part of the 2003-2004 trading card set.

Many of those players, including LeNeveu of course, will participate in the AHL All-Star Game (Monday Feb. 9, 7:00pm). The game will be televised. Here's more information on which channels, etc. :

http://www.theahl.com/AHL/News/2004/01/12/311546.html

Interesting fact:
Of the 295 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 91 percent have since competed in the NHL. Also, while LeNeveu is on the Canadian All-Star team, former Michigan State goalie and Hobey Baker winner Ryan Miller is on the US team, so we could perhaps see them matched up against one another in either the 2nd or the 3rd period (since neither of them is the starter for their respective squad).

Also, the ECHL All-Star Game (which will feature Paolini and Mark McRae) will be played next Wednesday night at 8:05 EST.

Random updates:

David Kozier still plays hockey in the UK. After finishing second in the EHL scoring race last year with 170 (!!!) points (92 G, 78 A) in 47 games with the Isle of Wight Raiders, he's moved north to play with the Manchester Phoenix, and has 20 points (9 G, 11 A) so far this year, through 33 games.

Travis Bell plays for the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs of the CHL and has a goal and 6 assists in 32 games played this season. He scored his first professional goal this past weekend.

I think Manchester is in a higher level division than IoW, which may explain why Kozier only 0.6 ppg and not 3.6.  I don't know UK hockey, but I remember an article about Kozier last year where he said he would be moving up to a league where they play defense for this season.

Kozier has jumped two divisions.  He now plays in the British Elite League, which is the highes division of British hockey.  One reason why his stats were inflated with Isle of Wight was that his home rink was only 165'x80'.  That makes the Boston Garden look like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Incidentally, did you know that hockey games in England are called fixtures?

Just like football (or soccer) games are called fixtures...not trainers, but physios, etc.  A buddy says hockey is the fastest growing sport in the country!

I can understand why hockey is catching on in the UK.  It's got the violence of rugby with the same attack and defend approach of soccer.

Most important, it's not a sport about which they can hide behind "the Americans stole one of our game" like baseball (rounders or cricket) and football (rugby).

Not a typo.  Don McKee is Rutter's coach.  They just don't explain that earlier in the article.  He's a Canadian and as far as I know, not related to our McKee,  but who knows?

Stephen Baby had a great weekend. On Friday night, Baby had an assist, a fighting major, and a +1 rating for the game, but Chicago lost 4-3 in overtime to Grand Rapids. And then tonight, he had his first ever multi-point game as a pro, with a goal and 2 assists (+2) in a 5-1 win over Manitoba. He now has 4 goals and 7 assists in 31 games this season.

In Springfield, Pelletier started and lost to Worcester on Wednesday night. Then on Friday night, LeNeveu had 36 saves in a 3-1 win against the same Worcester team. However, I noticed that, while looking at the box score, Pelletier actually played a couple of minutes in Friday night's game, though I'm not sure if it was at the beginning or at the end. Hopefully Lenny didn't get injured in the final minutes of play. Pelletier then started tonight's game and had 31 saves on 35 shots in a 4-2 loss to Lowell.

Well I found out what happened to Lenny on Saturday night. It doesn't sound serious. Here's an excerpt from the game recap on the Falcons' website -

"LeNeveu protected the Falcons lead with several sparkling saves in the final two periods including a glove save on a point-blank IceCats' opportunity in the middle frame. The rookie also slid from post to post to stop a power-play bid by Worcester defenseman Trevor Byrne in the third period.

LeNeveu left the game with 1:49 remaining to play due to cramping in his right leg muscles. Jean-Marc Pelletier completed the game in the Falcons' net without having to handle any shots."

In fact, 17 penalty minutes were assessed to Lenny, as the game clearly got out of hand in the final couple minutes:

Springfield - David LeNeveu - (Fighting (Secondary) Game Misconduct), 10 min, 18:43
Springfield - David LeNeveu - (Goalie Leaving Crease), 2 min, 18:43
Springfield - David LeNeveu - (Fighting Major), 5 min, 18:43

He had 34 saves on 39 shots.

Looks like Paolini and McRae made Cornell proud in the skills competition. Paolini was the runner up in the fastest skater competition:

Eastern Conference (14.508 average) d. Western Conference (15.074 average)

1. Kevin Spiewak, South Carolina, 14.166
2. Sam Paolini, Atlantic City, 14.550

And Paolini and McRae both made their shots in the breakaway relay:

Eastern Conference vs. Dan Ellis, Idaho (Saves – 2 of 6)– Sam Paolini, Atlantic City (made), Dusty Jamieson, Charlotte (made), Jason Maleyko, Cincinnati (made), Alex Burrows, Columbia (missed), Nate Kiser, Dayton (missed), Mark McRae, Florence (made).

I happened to turn that on just in time to catch Paolini's goal...kind of a soft goal, actually...the goalie got a piece of it.

FYI...you can bid on the game-worn jerseys from the ECHL all-star game, as well as the 13 pucks used to score goals (unfortunately, it doesn't tell you which puck was which goal, they're just called pucks 1-13, and I'm not sure that they're in order). http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/echlgameworn/
The jerseys are signed, and the proceeds go to charity.

Kind of out of my price range, but Paolini's #13 is here:

[q]Baby lifts Wolves past Grizzlies
Daily Herald Reports
Posted 1/24/04

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - A late third-period goal by Stephen Baby gave the Chicago Wolves a 2-1 victory over the Utah Grizzlies at The "E" Center on Friday night.

The victory snapped the Wolves' five-game road winless streak.

The Wolves (22-14-6-3) won their ninth consecutive game over the Grizzlies, dating to last season. The Grizzlies (14-24-4-3) have lost four consecutive games.

Baby notched the game-winning goal when he fired a pass from Eric Healey past goalie Jason Bacashihua at 15:44 of the final period.

Well this will probably be the last post for this thread, since January is coming to an end....

Anyway, nothing too exciting to write about, but.....in the AHL last night, Springfield lost its fourth game in its last five. LeNeveu had 22 saves on 24 shots in the 2-1 loss to Worcester. Last weekend, he had 29 saves on 32 shots in a 3-2 loss while Pelletier had 34 saves in a 2-1 win.

Doug Murray, who I've noticed has had a minus rating for several of the past few games for Cleveland had a good night last night, with a +2 rating in a 4-1 win. (And it wasn't just the current Cornell players getting 5 minute majors last night....Murray had a 5 minute major penalty for fighting).

By the way, Chicago (Baby) and Cleveland (Murray) will play each other a couple times next month. That should be interesting...
