Title: OT - Dartmouth and Cornell on PTI
Post by: Fieldf04 on November 25, 2003, 11:47:43 AM
Some amusing comments on the ESPN show, Pardon the Interruption, regarding Dartmouth and Cornell.  Not hockey related, but very funny.

Maybe the new coach can bring the stripe back.

Predictable.

I believe Pendergast was a good guy and did try hard, but the program was clearly going nowhere.  Finding a good Ivy League football coach is not easy--as anyone who's followed Cornell football for the last 50 years can attest.

I'm glad it was quick.

The epitome of "nice guys finish last."

I'm glad it was quick also.  I hope Pendergast remembers that they fired Siefert after a one win season, and he came out of it all right.

On the other hand, we were one chip shot field goal (a missed 27 yarder by Bucknell in the season opener) from going 0-10.  And coaches just don't survive that kind of season.

Contra, Paterno, Joe, PSU 2004.

Uh, Pendergast is no George Siefert.  Sorry, I now live in the Bay Area, and have always been a 49ers fan....
Still, a terrible way to go after a difficult season.  I wish the coach would have stepped down voluntarily before the AD dismissed him.

From what I've heard, he had a five-year deal, which means the university ate the last two years. Personally, I'm very glad to see this move happen...I thought he was going to be around for at least one more year. Anyone who saw the Princeton game last season knows that hitting "Ask Madden" in the video game came up with better coaching decisions than Pendergast.

What a horrible coach.  Great call with the ask Madden!  So funny!  Six players made the all-ivy team from an 0-7 squad!  That says something about the coach.  Pendergast was a great guy and the football players loved him compared to Mangurian but maybe it's not always best to have a coach that is buddy buddy with the players.  Sometimes if the players like you too much it means you're not pushing them hard enough.  The guy didn't have any success at Hamilton (my brother went there at the time and called the football team a joke) and if you're not successful with a Div III program, then I'm not sure how that would translate into any sort of success at the I-AA level.  Anyways, here's to hoping that we can find a coach that can bring pride back to the football program and that we are not restricted to hiring a Cornell grad (not that Pendergast was one).  Although it is great to have a Cornell grad coach all of our teams it just doesn't always bring the person most qualified to do a great job.  I know a lot of eager sports fans have quickly grabbed the coat tails of the basketball program and the same can happen with the football program.  It would be very beneficial to the University to have a better football team that can compete during homecoming.

Well, five of the six were named honorable mention.  One made the first team.

And basketball was beaten tonight by Colgate.:`( (according to USA Today)

Interestingly, when I try to edit, I'm not presented with the complete posting, only the original quote.

For comparison, Penn had twelve first-team all-Ivy players.

Appropriately enough, considering the origin of this thread, Kornheiser and Wilbon mentioned Pendergast's name as the fired head coach of Cornell football in their "big finish" segment of PTI. Wilbon called Pendergast Kornheiser's boy, Kornheiser tried to get Pendergast's back, Wilbon asked what Cornell's record was this year, and Kornheiser gave a generalized "they had a bad record, it was his third year, I hope he gets another job somewhere..." but didn't mention how bad his record really was.
