I usually love reading this - it's typically well written and does an excellent job of both summarizing and predicting. However, the past two weeks have boiled my blood to no end; Juan Martinez picked us to lose against Princeton last week, and again to lose against SLU(t) this week.  The man is entitled to his opinion, and i would certainly never underestimate the north country road trip, but the recent evidence just isn't there to make the claim he's making for a 3-1 win on the part of SLU(t). Overall, his record is less than .500 in predicting games.  This would suggest to me that the man just doesn't know what he's talking about yet. Has anyone else gotten this impression?

(I've put this as diplomatically as I could with all due respect being given to the woofing gods and such.)

Eh, the predictions are really the least important part of the column. They're just for fun. Besides, he's gotta pick an upset... and he labeled ours "our upset of the week." Judge the content of the article, not the sidebar.

As for the content :-), I don't think it's nearly as fun as it has been in recent years. I think he does a good job of the stats and the analysis and the game recap, but it just doesn't have the entertaining 'flair', for lack of a better word - that Jayson and Becky used to give it.

I agree completely. Where are Jayson and Becky, anyway? Their quality of writing was far superior. I would read every word. With Martinez, I find myself skimming after a while.

Didn't Martinez effectively copy and paste bits and pieces of other off-season articles in order to make his pre-season article?  Maybe that's all one can really do for the pre-season, but still...yeah, I miss Jayson and Becky too.  I'd probably even prefer Mike Volonnino (now the CHA columnist), because then I could just get ired up by my supposed nemesis. :-D

I was just poking through some of the archives of ECAC columns.  Indeed, some of the past columnists have had different styles and you may or may not like what they had.  But one prediction I stumbled across, rather stunned me.  See the tail end of http://uscollegehockey.com/m/ec/?data=preview&date=200220030320 for the predictions of last year's ECAC championships.  Blaeser and Moy pick it perfectly right down to the last goal!
  ::wow::

Hey, every once in a while, even the pundits get it exactly right. :-P

Well, not exactly.  Their prediction was in regulation. ;-)

Wow.  When Jayson started off as the ECAC correspondent, there were fans from around the league ready to lynch him every week based solely on his predictions.  Some people I knew were a tad bit obsessed with him if he didn't pick Cornell.  It was almost amusing.  I actually think he got a bit fed up with it, based on the fact that he started the "OK, you think making these predictions is easy?  You try it!" weekly contest.  Personally, I liked his writing style, and his weekly previews almost always included interesting quotes from most all coaches.  It's good to see that the younger crowd who weren't exposed to those early days appreciate his work.

Now if you've ever heard him do the radio play-by-play of an RPI game, you may form a different opinion, as he is probably the biggest screeching homer on college hockey radio I've ever heard.  (Although the Colgate and Brown guys last year got close)

Yup, I remember that. I think someone noticed that up in Albany as the games were going - Age, Beeeej, MHA, Judy, Melissa... I don't remember. Anyway, they said that's why they there knew, when we went to OT, that we would win, cause it would complete the sweep of predictions :-).

Though yes, technically they said regulation.

Edit: Actually, they didn't say regulation, they only implied it by not saying OT, but I think they just didn't committ :-).
