One of Cornell Hockey's most iconic traditions is making its return.
On Saturday, September 19, the Lynah Faithful will come together for The Return of the Great Wait, an abridged revival of the legendary student campout for Men's Ice Hockey season tickets.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m., students in attendance will receive early access to purchase their Men's Ice Hockey season tickets in person at the Cornell Athletics Ticket Office. No phones. No computers. Just students coming together to secure their seats at Lynah Rink and celebrate the return of a Cornell tradition.
Additional event details, including arrival information and the complete schedule of activities, will be shared soon.
Can't join us for the Great Wait? Men's Ice Hockey student season tickets will become available through the regular online sales process the following week, with access opening by class year:
Monday, September 21: Graduate and professional students
Note: To limit access issues on release day, Graduate/Professional Students should reach out to bigredtix@cornell.edu prior to the ticket release to validate their student status.
Tuesday, September 22: Class of 2027
Wednesday, September 23: Class of 2028
Thursday, September 24: Class of 2029
Friday, September 25: Class of 2030
Student season tickets are limited and will remain available only while supplies last.

Sounds like they're making a big event of it - "complete schedule of activities" implies as such.
I, for one, am honestly excited as HELL. Though I know my seat probably isn't being sold before Tuesday (which is when I get in, because grad sales on Monday are always only the grad block in A), I'm still almost certainly going to go. (As long as I'm not asleep 😅) It sounds like it's going to be a great time.
And I love how this is a great way for the younger undergrads to "get in first" - you care about Cornell hockey this much? Prove it! :D
Um, the great wait isn't if you don't have to wait. Season tickets don't sell out. Okay, Cornell can introduce an artificial waiting period, maybe play some pep songs.
My first year at Cornell, the line was really big, and long. Oh, wait. The team had gone 29-0 the year before. That creates demand. I did the line for the heck of it, since I had a press pass that kind of guarantees center ice seating.
I believe it was sophomore year that I was part of the contingent that managed the Barton Hall line. I think because of a Sun Sports Desk affiliation rather than my fraternity connection. There was more demand for tickets than tickets. This being two seasons removed from — checking — last national championship. And Cornell did go on to the NCAA championship game in Boston Garden that year. Spoiler alert: We lost to BU. And we went to the Frozen Four the next year as well. So that kept people filling Lynah via season tickets. That was a looooong time ago that every home game was full. We still have Harvard.
So some of it is rah-rah, some of it one hopes gets line-participants get better tickets.
I'm glad they are bringing back the line. Good work, Casey. And, to be fair, it is a modern world, and some kids just want to order online, not in line. Hopefully there's room for both.
Although I really hope it becomes a huge thing and sells out all student tickets on the in person line every year.

Yeah, I can see why they don't want people queueing in front of Lynah for days before 😂 but I definitely agree. Tradition needs to be respected, and bringing it back in this form should be awesome.

My two years with season tickets (wtf was freshman or sophomore me doing) were the 05-06 crowd crush situation that ended the surprise ticket location announcement system, and then the first year they did "let's all have an overnight on the scratchy green indoor turf in Bartels."
Neither was great, really.

Did you get tickets for 66-67? It was either then or maybe the previous season where we just started our own line the night before. Nothing like Barton was organized at that time. I don't know when Cornell actually took over the process. When I'm talking about we had our own sign in sheet to keep line orderly.

I can tell you that in 79-80 we lined up outside Barton and overnighted. I remember it flurrying. I was a sophomore, but I held a place in line for two seniors from my fraternity who showed up in the morning.
In 81-82, they moved the overnight into the baseball practice facility. However, the line formed before the doors opened. It was raining heavily. If you got a spot under the eaves of the building you stayed mostly dry. If not...

As per my email today, the event begins at 7 AM.
Doing my math, to get there at 7 on the dot I either need to spend the night somewhere on campus or walk it (1.2 miles uphill) from the Commons.
My usual bus route to get to Lynah, the 32, leaves at 8 AM, I'd get to Uris around 8:15, and stroll downhill.
Alternatively, I can catch the 30 at 7 AM, go up to Carpenter, and leg it up the slope that convinces me I have asthma.
OR go up to Milstein and walk from there. I think from Milstein it's mostly flat.
I dunno. Thoughts? (She says, as if her seat choice is high-demand enough that not being there at 7 on the dot is going to make her lose out.)

I don't think it'll ever get back to 7-day camp out levels (especially in the post-covid era), but even this should be a lot of fun. We'll see how it actually looks, though. Hopefully there'll be at least a decent turnout
and I can make some friends.
I'm assuming breakfast/related morning snacks are part of it. Always nice. "Spirit group performances" so... cheerleading? Band? It will at least be entertaining, I suppose. Giveaways - probably hats or rally towels or other related paraphernalia, possibly with a print about like, "I survived the Great Wait" or some related line.
Would probably be nicer if they started it at like, 9, and the tickets began at lunch. But I also categorically don't have an issue with "forcing" "the little bastards" to wake up early. (Until, of course, that group includes me. Hiss.)
I think I'll do the Milstein route and get there around 7:30ish. Hm. Many thoughts.

7:00 a.m. – The line officially opens with music, breakfast, giveaways and activities
8:00 a.m. – Live performance and tradition teaching with the Cornell Marching Band and spirit groups
9:00 a.m. – Student season ticket sales begin
The first 200 students to purchase season tickets will receive an exclusive "I Did My Time in the Line" Cornell Hockey T-shirt. Additional food, beverages and giveaways will be available while supplies last.
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
Bring your valid Cornell student ID.
Student season ticket purchases are limited to two tickets per student.
Tickets will be sold in person at the Athletics Ticket Office beginning at 9:00 a.m.
No phone or computer is required to purchase your tickets.
Activities will take place outdoors, so dress for the weather.
Food, shirts and other giveaways are available in limited quantities and are not guaranteed.
Arriving early is strongly encouraged.
The Great Wait is about more than securing your seat at Lynah—it is a chance to meet fellow members of the Lynah Faithful, learn the cheers and traditions that make Cornell Hockey special and begin the season together.

It doesn't need to return to the way it was; it should develop the way students want now. The mystery of the Faithful is a balance between tradition and novelty.
But the undergrads will always be the energy source. Without them, nothing. Assuming our students have not been rendered braindead and spiritless by the university's current corporate captivity, they'll find new ways to entertain themselves and drive a burning sharpened log into Day Hall's eye, as is proper.

Your trusty war correspondent here, going to give a boots-on-the-ground running update for the event. Partially so I don't give up and pass out, partially for you guys to experience it with me.
I've woken up before my 4 am alarm. I'm legging it up the hill.
Plan is to leave by 5 am, possibly before, and get to Lynah by 6. It's 36 minutes or so walking, but I'm a frail old person in the body of a 22-year-old (at least when it comes to trekking uphill, and this is basically one entire uphill shot), so I expect I'll have to take several breaks to un-jellify my legs. May make a pit stop at Myron Taylor as well, depending on time, water reserves, need to raid the vending machines, etc.
Sunrise is 6.50 am. Bartels doors open 7 am.

Reminds me of a time long ago. A friend and I were downtown wearing ski jackets and ran into Petit, Higgs and a few others wearing shorts and teeshirts. Definitely, hockey players!

Amazing time camping out at Bartels! I was first in line. Slept about an hour I guess. Had 4 interviews for various publications re being first in line. Pics with Coach Jones, Ryan Jake and George, and Ryan Lombardi

I'm honestly not sure if it was Pirtle lol, my standard for that is "guy who looks like Sean Schmidt's lost child with red hair" and the guy I saw hit those criteria 😂 that being said, every other hockey player I saw that day (Catalano, Kraft, Walsh from the photos) wasn't in formalwear, so I have no idea. (My faceblindness is the stuff of legends in my friend groups 😅)
And for the curious, I did take a 6-hour nap once I got back to my apartment. During which time my father, who presumably has no idea what bullshit I am up to (camera avoidance, hooray) quite literally texted me that it's getting colder (60s during day and 40s at night) and to dress warmly 😂
Could've used that reminder yesterday...

Thank you for the commentary. It's certainly encouraging that so many students showed up. There must be some vibrations carrying over from the good old days on the hill. I wonder whether any of the undergrads were children (or even grandchildren) of alumni who had camped in the line and passed on stories.
This seems to have been a great promotion and better than free pizza to create a buzz. Thanks to whoever made this happen.
My son is a first year and got the same booty as stearax did. He went with section B, I think row 8 or 9. our seasons are right across from him in section N! I'm happy for the students that they did this, it is one of those experiences (waiting out for tickets on line overnight or in the am) that we all had that kids today dont get and I'm sure you they will all remember.
Lunch at the Milkstand is pretty sweet too!

Section A is underrated, especially if you're into heckling, starting chants, throwing newspapers and hitting someone, singing along to the band, being less distracted by the video board, and celebrating goals with the boyz.
My seats went from A to on the glass in G to D. No bad seats when the place is full tbh.
Why is there no link for season tickets for non-students on the Cornell website? (Unless I'm missing it?) I wanted to check to see what's available, but can't find it anywhere.
Also, townie tickets are way too expensive if their goal is to sell out the rink.

Should note that we wanted C, but my senior year was the year the cut the student section by sticking the boosters in C to somehow water down the rowdiness. Didn't work. Hence, also, for those of you who may recall, my roommates and my creation, Section D Tonite. Was supposed to be Section C Tonite.
