With journalism dying, I don't think we should be bypassing paywalls. Either subscribe or don't read it IMO.
As to the topic at issue, there are many such cases. Unless you're one of like 15 truly elite educational brands (Ivies, MIT, Stanford, etc.) or are a member of the B10 or SEC for football, I don't know how a school is supposed to sustain itself these days.
People talk all the time about School X going D-1 in hockey. Seems foolish to me. Schools can't afford another major money sink. The few who can are already committed to spending all their money on football. We may see the number of D-1 hockey schools shrink rather than grow. Similarly, I wonder if schools will start cutting their football programs. Particularly in a world where you need to spend $20m on players to compete nationally, and it's been well established that football is giving kids severe brain damage. It just doesn't make sense to play football in this climate. And of course, we should all be skeptical of the ability of any school outside the Power 4 to be paying NIL/revenue share to hockey and lacrosse players.
