Looks like he spent only one year at Cornell.

Seems like he is a defacto goalie coach too, which is great. Welcome to the Big Red!

The Omaha announcement is dated July 15.  I wonder how much warning Cornell had.  It seems like a quick turnaround to bring Keiser in so promptly.

The lower ranking assistant coaches bounce around constantly. It's not specific to this season nor to Cornell.

Yep, this exactly. And it's not like we lost an coach or staff member who's been with the team for years.

Also possible that they were looking into Kaiser already before Robinson accepted the offer.

I disagree.  The "lesser" coaches are the foundation of the program.  They develop the players and the better their quality, the better the team.  And obviously the better programs will attract better talent at all levels.

Cornell was expecting Robinson to stay because they posted this bio update in early summer, before he left.  It refers to him starting his second year.   https://cornellbigred.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/roster/coaches/josh-robinson/11947

And if you think the goaltending coach is not important consider this:
Dartmouth  -- Associate Head Coach Jason Tapp
Princeton -- Assistant Coach Shane Talarico (former Cornell Directory of Operations)
Michigan -- Assistant Coach Kevin Reiter

Dartmouth has been attracting great goalies.

I sense that Cornell undervalues goalie coaches.  That may be why we lost Cournoyer to Wisconsin.

Also all the head coaches try to protect them and get jobs for them -- it's a big network and it all works by who you know.  I have no info but I would not be surprised if Casey worked closely with Robinson and the Omaha coach to make the move happen.

Amateur (ahem) hockey is the last place on earth where people have not become soulless assclowns.  Maybe in ten years we have that to look forward to.

I'm very confused.  How many coaches,  assistant coaches, associate coaches and ersatz coaches are there on Cornell's staff? Are any of the current staff unpaid?

There are no unpaid positions in D1 hockey, the volunteer coach was eliminated, I believe in 2024.

The NCAA allows four countable coaches:  a head coach (Casey Jones) and three (3) assistant coaches for D1 schools.

Cornell has three assistant coaches:
Associate Head Coach Sean Flanagan (11th year) -- leads in face offs
Assistant Coach Chris Brown (2nd year) -- leads defense and penalty kill
Assistant Coach Cam Clarke (2nd year) -- leads power play

In addition there is a Director of Hockey Operations, as discussed above.  Lately this role has been goalie coach and is responsible for video including video replay decisions and editing.  I also assume this person is responsible general administrative paper work.

Cornell also has an equipment manager, Sean Schmidt in his 15th year.  The atheltic trainer, Kaitlyn Petryszen, and strength and conditioning coach, Mike Missen, support several programs.  Ms. Petryszen serves the Mens and Womens Polo teams and the Golf team.  Mr. Missen serves softball, golf and equestrian.

In addition to a head coach who had played goalie (Seth Brylcreem Appert Coaching RPI - 2006-2017, Ferris State 1992-1996), RPI had at least one former Engineer goalie fill the roll of goalie coach - Ursus Minor may be able to fill us in on the assistant coach alums who held the position. The goalie coach at the "Tute" was unpaid IIRC.  This strategy helped Seth advance to get booted from RPI into his current gig with the Sabres by way of the Rochester Americans.

My daughter's 3 year old son's paternal grandfather is an RPI/Albany Med grad and thus when my wife and I passed through RPI on our morning babysitting pickup run she often pointed out "Grampy's college".  After a few weeks of this I started to correct her with "INSTITUTE!!".  This went on for a few weeks until my grandson and I began a now cemented routine of yelling "COLLEGE" "INSTITUTE" back and forth each time we pass through the campus.

I am only mentioning this aside intentionally drifting this thread because......August!

When did Ed Kelly (who's now in something like his 30th year with Cornell Athletics) switch away from men's hockey as its primary athletic trainer? That's honestly news to me.

I think Petryszyn started as athletic trainer in my first year at Cornell.

She's usually the one behind the bench figuring out if injuries are playable on or not.

We lost Cournoyer to Wisconsin primarily because of $. Pretty sure Adam said about as much.

Goalies are not inherently coachable in the way skaters are. By the time you hit college level, most of the base instincts are already locked in; you're mostly just fine-tuning details in the game at that point. Nobody's learning RVH at Lynah. And, I mean, we haven't had any issue with finding good goalies out of piles of dirt before. A coach who runs the powerplay is one thing. Goalie coaching is glorified voodoo.

And also, nobody joins a college hockey program specifically for an assistant coach/goalie coach/whatever. Those guys move around a fair bit. Occasionally you have guys who move with a head coach move (see: Ryan, Caton), but I can't think of anyone who moved with an assistant.

This is wrong.  Even NHL goalies adjust technique, positioning, enhance their skills, mindset, etc., often as a direct result of their goaltending coach.  I don't see why that wouldn't be a consideration for a junior goaltender considering where to develop for 3-4 years.

It is a ton of video analysis (ahem) and tweaks, but sometimes major adjustments to positioning, reactions and tons of strength, mobility, conditioning work with the goalies. But, many goalies kinda have their own way of things, so its a lot of head shrinking too. Goalies typically have a coach or guru they have worked with for years, probably mostly in the off season, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were contracted to view video weekly and give tips to them on the side.

I don't think Adam said that. I believe the only things he said about Cournoyer's transfer were (1) that prior to committing anywhere, his advisor contacted a bunch of programs to ask if they had interest and (2) Adam insinuated Cournoyer wasn't a serious student. Adam would probably tell you he doesn't know why Cournoyer transferred. No idea about the goalie coach issue but it would indeed be bad (and surprising) if we had been one of the few schools without a dedicated goalie coach.

I remember a prior goalie coach but I guess I could say I almost remember. At the time I was a bit worried that RPI had an ace unpaid goalie coach but that's all I can pull up.

Current AC Mathias Lange was a goalie at RPI.

I remember a prior goalie coach but I guess I could say I almost remember. At the time I was a bit worried that RPI had an ace unpaid goalie coach but that's all I can pull up.

Error due to floppy disk failure or mushy disk.  Haven't had a chance to check under the dome.

There probably have been others, but I don't remember.

We lost Cournoyer to Wisconsin primarily because of $. Pretty sure Adam said about as much.

It's true - I didn't say that. I believe $ is a big deal right now. But in Cournoyer's case, it wasn't really that.

I wouldn't read anything into the web site getting updated. It doesn't mean he was expected to stay. The web site is updated as a matter of course. The SIDs have no insight into anything going on in hockey operations until it happens. And that's a not a criticism. That's true for every school.

It's kinda weird given Cornell's history with goalies to think that it's doing anything wrong in that department.

Quote from: marty on August 12, 2026, 03:51:05 AMI'm very confused.  How many coaches,  assistant coaches, associate coaches and ersatz coaches are there on Cornell's staff? Are any of the current staff unpaid?

The Director of Hockey Operations is not an actual coach - when players go on recruitment visits and showcases they are the ones who give the tours.  It is an important role but they are not ( to my knowledge) on the bench actually coaching a whole lot.their role is administrative and logistical.  They sometimes also are given the title of assistant coach so that when there are showcases that none of the actual coaches can/want to attend, they send that person and call him a coach.

it is also a resume builder for a coach-in-training because you learn about the administrative responsibilities of program management and the details of what teams want out of their video program.

A few days ago, the Sun had a nice interview with Austin Keiser (https://www.cornellsun.com/article/2026/09/mens-hockey-hires-austin-keiser-as-director-of-hockey-operations-and-video-coordinator-adding-a-goaltender-s-perspective-to-the-coaching-staff).

The Sun article emphasizes both the loss of Cournoyer and Keiser's skill in developing goalies as significant in his addition.  I assume the new Sun hockey beat team did not make that up, but got it from the coaches.

You're reading a whole lot into a 26 year old sounding excited he got the gig.
