Strangely enough, hockey just did away with the last remnants of the Pairwise.
I always liked some aspects of the pairwise, even aspects of the "old" pairwise like record in the last 16, which could've ultimately been tweaked to be more fair regarding strengh-of-schedule. I think it's foolish that hockey now ignores even the results of head-to-head matches. That lacrosse, which has always been one of the worst smoke-filled rooms, might go to this fairer method at this point is certainly ironic.
