Title: Albany Regional (3/27/26 and 3/29/26)
Post by: stereax on March 26, 2026, 11:33:30 AM
Michigan vs Bentley - 5:30 PM, 3/27

Minnesota-Duluth vs Penn State - 9:00 PM, 3/27

Final - 3/29

As y'all probably know by now, I'm going to be boots on the ground in Albany. Though my coverage pales in comparison to Jane's (or really, any actual reporter), I'll be giving updates here about both my general travels as well as the games, both in pictures and in commentary. (Don't worry, I'll be watching the Cornell game(s) on my phone and repping the Cornell red :D )

I'm mostly just hoping for good things for Kyler Kovich. And really, don't we all?

If there's anywhere I should stop by in Albany (for food or just to burn time/see stuff), do drop a recommendation - I'm already planning to hit up the New York State Museum, as well as the Albany Institute of History and Art. Will probably head back to Crossgates as well.

(...Also, now realizing I'll have to get back to my hotel at 11:30 PM, or later, on a Friday night...)
(...I need to socialize with people around me to get a ride...)

Now that Bombers Burrito Bar has rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisibule, as it were, I don't have any actual Albany recommendations. But to the extent Troy isn't too far for you, the Plum Blossom is still pretty much the best and most creative Chinese food I've had anywhere and in a gorgeously sculpted setting.

Don't care all that much about the outcomes in this one, but it'd be hilarious to see Bentley with two upsets. That said, I picked Penn State over Michigan so that Cornell could upset Penn State in Vegas.

Whoever is eating the egg and chive thing on this bus: I hope you break into hives.

Look, I get things like protein bars, cookies, Cheez-its, snacks like that. Whatever, fine. But there should be a rule that you're not allowed to eat highly fragrant food on a long haul bus. I thought it was common sense, but.

Restaurant recommendations from my brother-in-law who lives in Albany:

Iron Gate Cafe
Shining Rainbow for Chinese

And well the Statehouse has tours:

Looking forward to your coverage!!

This restaurant has had great reviews for years:

https://www.cafecapriccio.com/

I have only visited a now defunct place owned by the same people in Troy.

93 miles to Albany, as per the sign on the road. Only 8 to Utica.

If you think I overshare, the girls behind me are discussing when they ordered wings and, I quote, "didn't shit" after them. This was repeated multiple times. So the entire bus can hear it. That and the lady next to me watching YouTube shorts in Vietnamese with the sound on. (And I can tell because the captions are in Latin script and look like Vietnamese.)

How many miles to Albany? 10! Thank God.

At the hotel! Still as crappy as I remember 🥰 but it looks like the tableside lights are working this time, which means I should be able to charge my stuff here! Woot!

Probably just going to swing by the grocery store and do some cheap shopping and call it a day. Don't need to get scammed again with $15 egg rolls haha. But tomorrow I'm going to try to get out early and do some stuff before the games, and hopefully I'll get to try a few restaurant recommendations too!

I already mentioned Wolff's, but closer, the Lark St. Tavern and Lionheart have good vibes. Lark St. Tavern says they have open mic comedy on Thursdays if you want to most likely cringe. Lionheart is very British pub with darts and fish n chips like stuff

Looking at the menu, it's less British than I remember.

Next to Wolff's is the former "Miss Albany" diner which is now a ramen place. Really great historical art deco diner building.

Yeahhhhhh. There were a couple places in Colonie that looked nice for a similar price but I quickly reminded myself that I do Not have a car and therefore that's a little risky, lol.

First stop, Navigator card so I don't lose all my singles.

Second stop, Albany city hall! Will be stopping by the State Capitol at noon for a guided tour, but for now, a little free wandering :) They have some really nice art here. And the architecture!

UMD fans spotted: 1 group
PSU fans spotted: 1 guy with a jacket
Mich fans spotted: easily half a dozen groups by now. I shot the shit with one lady who told me Albany was MUCH cheaper than Chicago (presumably, where basketball is).

Off to burn some more time at the museum pre-game :)

Plus I'm close to the red line! So I should have good views of the entire ice. And only four rows up, too. Beautiful. AND next to the tunnel!

Dueling "Let's go Bentley!" and "Let's go Blue!" chants.

It's not super loud in here (without chants) but my right ear is still static-ing. Hopefully this wears off sooner rather than later.

The Bentley contingent is loud! Hell yeah.

Mich has a cowbell in the band... and needs to remind us.

Did y'all know the Bentley goalie, Swedin, is 5'10"? And 151 lbs.

Bentley also has a Castagna on their team!

Nice save by Swedin!

Bentley does R&R part 2 as well. But no "you suck"s.

Terrible Falcons turnover leads to a TJ Hughes goal. 1-0, UMich.

UMich gets a powerplay. Not much Bentley can do on it.

Another nice Swedin glove save.

Bentley's 2 goes down the tunnel. Oof. And with him, the medical lady.

Big collision between UMich 92 and Bentley 15 by the boards.

New pair of gloves for Bentley 21.

Okay, connecting to rink wifi, trying to get the Cornell game floating...

Rink is surprisingly pretty full. Bentley 2 finally comes back.

"Your event is starting soon". Bleh. But I'm anxious NOW!

Nice pass, with nobody to receive it.

Some jerk is yelling at the backup Bentley goalie, saying nobody opens the door better than him. Odd choice of player to taunt.

HOLY SHIT ROBERTSON FROM BEHIND THE BLUE LINE??? DID IT MAKE IT IN ON TIME???

Period 2 starting.

Nice block by Spence there.

Bentley player bowls into his own goalie. Ooh, delayed penalty. Time for the UMich PP.

And Bentley 22 down the tunnel, throwing his stick and gloves. One of the rink attendants closes the door to the tunnel.

I'm trying SO hard to pay attention to this game but the Cornell game is on my phone...

No call on that? The UMich guy pulled him down...

Star Wars theme from the Mich band.

Ivankovic makes a SPRAWLING save there. Wow.

Bentley band pulls out Levitating by Dua Lipa.

More backup goalie door taunts. The guy doing it, predictably, has a stein of beer in his hand.

Bentley to the PK. Their guy kinda throws a UMich guy down.

Bentley's band now playing Tequila. Fun!

Holy dance by UMich 18 there trying to solo a powerplay. Couple of nice chances.

AND IT'S THREE! Moldenhauer. 3-0 UMich.

Bentley playing with a lot more pace right now. When you're down by 3 you kinda gotta...

AND THAT'S FOUR. Ivankovic celebrating from his goal. Muscott. 4-0, UMich.

Bentley to the powerplay now. Both teams tap their sticks for armed forces members.

"Bevilacqua!" chant for the backup goalie by the UMich trolls.

Even Mich fans are yelling for Bentley to shoot lmaoooo

Hideously offside and now a scrum!!!

Stripes seem to have problems getting out of the way again.

NICE save by Swedin. Poor dude.

This place is pretty packed. Not full, but not too many open seats. Decent amount of people in the upper bowl, even.

Let's go Bentley chant still loud even down 4.

End 2, 4-0 UMich.

Start of the third.

I'm so stupidly invested in the Cornell game I'm only half watching this one.

UMich penalty. Nice shorthanded chance but Swedin takes it to the mask.

Puck hops to the bench and Bevilacqua grabs it. 106 erupts with NICE SAVEs.

Ref had to separate two players, lol.

Coinciding roughing minors! It's that point of the game. 4 on 4 time.

Still hate seeing myself on cameta, bless.

That is a CONTINGENT of RIT fans.

Bentley band pulls out We're Gonna Start A Fight. Heck yeah.

And UMich scores, 5-0.

Damn, another nice PSU chance.

PSU band is half cheerleaders?

Why are these breaks so loooooong. TV? I wonder if you can see me on TV.

Coupla guys going to the locker room for PSU. Ice bags being brought out. The guys are back!

PSU to the PK for too many men. Lmao.

Holy mother of one timers. Damn. Almost!

Holy fuck the static is KILLING ME.

McKenna as usual with zero defensive zone effort. Schafer would kill him.

OFF THE IRON FOR PSU 29.

Jesus this is a good fucking game.

UMD hates Charlie Cerrato, lol.

WHAT A CHANCE THERE.

Van Olm absolutely played bowling with that UMD forward into his goalie.

Holy shit Cerrato on the bench what kinda painkillers did they pump into this dude?

The more stupid "do dumb shit for the TV" cams they do in this place the less I want to come back.

How does Lynah never trigger this tinnitus shit I got going on? How did Placid not? How is THIS RINK DOING IT CONSTANTLY? Oh my god a few seconds of respite holy shit this is so nice. That lasted two minutes. That was amazing.

Nice stop!

End 2, 1-1.

Puck drop for the third period and it looks like there is nothing good open late.

Woof, PSU goalie with a juicy rebound. Luckily stays out.

If this goes into OT idek how I get back to the hotel lmao.

Awkward Dad Dance Cam. I've seen fucking everything. Get me out of here.

I was gonna ask if Cerrato was alive but I see him on the bench!

Idk what Bulldogs fans are barking and yipping near me for every time a Bulldog has the puck but it is SO annoying.

Holy stop! Holy other stop!

That stayed out! Damn, Duluth goalie doing the splits.

"Let's go State" is annoying.

Alright, so - Saturday! Decided to start this by going to the Art Institute, following both my own research and recommendations. Unfortunately, I took a route that required significant stairsing. Gross. In either case... enjoy some of the art!

They had a couple of exhibits, including flower paintings, abstract art, sculptures, landscapes, and ancient Egypt. (The issue with the Egypt one is I frequently ask myself "nice artifacts, who'd you steal them from?" Like... isn't it a little weird to be displaying dead bodies in a museum? Objectively.)

One of the things I did like was, when I was heading back, I had to clamber over a little handrail (ow) but then there was a bridge to the bus stop with all these little engraved stones in them. I took pictures of a few :')

I keep thinking about being remembered after I die. Legacy. Little pieces of immortality, love letters in bridges, locks, desire paths. One bad storm ruining everything.

Maybe I'm just used to real Polish cooking, but another disappointment. Still pretty good - the onion rings were quite nice - but an entire sausage with sauerkraut and mustard shouldn't have tasted basically only of the mustard. I'm sure they numb down the kraut for American consumption, but it really wasn't that sour. And why is the wurst almost tasteless? The bread was nice - very light and flaky, almost croissant-like. But c'moooon.

Plus, the ordering system online was a mess, which means I couldn't figure out how to even get water because they didn't have any drinks on the menu lmao.

So now I'm heading back to the rink for the regional finals. Gonna see if I can't find a bodega to grab something to drink beforehand, because I've got a few minutes before the doors open.

$3 for a bottle of water. Okay... gotta chug that in 5 minutes.

Just saw someone in a St Patty's Devils shirt. Life is better already.

Heading in, so I'll give you my next update from the inside!

They had a couple of exhibits, including flower paintings, abstract art, sculptures, landscapes, and ancient Egypt. (The issue with the Egypt one is I frequently ask myself "nice artifacts, who'd you steal them from?" Like... isn't it a little weird to be displaying dead bodies.

Years ago when visiting the Egyptian room I heard a youngster ask his mom after seeing the mummies, "Is this Heaven?"

Dueling chants at the start of the game. This one's competitive.

Ooh, a Bulldog pushed a Wolverine hard enough to get a quick whistle. No penalty though.

Place is remarkably full in the centers at least. The ends are sparser.

Did they say that was Horcoff's TWENTY-FIFTH??? Who the hell do they stat farm on?

The Michigan SIEVE SIEVE SIEVE IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT is obviously inspired (taken?) from us, but they do it after the goal announcement, not the goal itself. Weird. The "Screw BU" song turns into "Let's Go Blue".

A rehoofing in front of me! Yayyy.

Whoaaa Gajan did a 360 out there.

Man he just RID that kid into the boards. Woof.

TV timeout. The band is playing that one song I like but don't know the name of. Ride of the Valkyries? That can't be right.

Mich 16 is a BEAST on the forecheck.

UMD 5 with a HUGE hit. A Mich guy hits UMD 25 in retaliation, he goes to the bench in PAIN. Scrum time. UMD 25 down the tunnel. First "FUCK!" of the night.

And they call a penalty on the hold of TJ Hughes? Ok.

Imperial March for the powerplay... ok...

Shorthanded break! Now back the other way. They play the Plantes on the PK too? Is there anything these two CAN'T do?

VALENTINI. 2-0 UMICH. That play reminded me of the one between Mack and Major vs MSU.

Actually that's probably the original version.  I believe BU then adopted it as "Go BU", to which we responded "Screw BU".  Although, TBH, the BU version may have come first and Michigan adopted it.

We added the "XXX, too" at the ECAC tournament at the Boston Garden in 1981.

Nice keep there by UMD 8.

The Q fans next to me, today in Kraken jerseys: "I feel better about yesterday now."

I like the UMich band. I don't like that they use the cowbell every 10 seconds.

Horcoff to the box.

Wow what a whiff by UMD 8.

What I love about this UMD powerplay (take notes, Big Red) is that THEY JUST SHOOT THE PUCK. They don't wait for the "perfect" shot, they just get it on net.

UMD 5 crunched Mich 9, wow.

End 1. 3-0 UMich. Hill to climb for the Bulldogs.

I have no idea about the history lol, I just know it as the Screw BU song.

Max Plante how do you miss that???

Damn nice Gajan save.

Nice jump, Hage. He's playing too.

Beautiful UMD entry and another choke. And again.

Oh, hey, Kovich and Robertson next to each other.

Again, JUST wide from UMD.

Max Plante for the hold, I guess.

...Y'know, watching this, it kinda just looks - like a lot of fun to play hockey. I don't even think I could stay upright on skates, lol, I suck at sports. And I'm too old besides. (Yes, I know realistically I'm not too old to pick it up for a beer league kind of thing, but I'm one year out of a law degree. Some things are just mutually incompatible.) Plus, I do enjoy having my teeth and bones intact, lol.

Sorry. Too deep again. Mich is on the powerplay. Didn't do much with it though.

Ooh, close one by UMD.

I can't tell whether I think the stripey UMich helmets are really sick or really dumb.

UMich 22 off the IRON.

DAMN, nice block by UMich 10 there.

One more of these stupid dance cams and I swear...

Holiday by Green Day! Thanks, UMich band.

Holy Ivankovic. Shutting the DOOR today. UMD just can't buy one.

"Fuck you, ref! Blow the whistle!" Both coaches are ANGRY. They're redoing the faceoff after like 10 seconds???

Well that's a penalty. UMich 17, 2 for crosschecking.

Yeah, UMD can't buy a goal.

Jesus.

3-0 UMich, end 2.

UMD 5 lays huge hits. One on UMich 6. Another atempt on UMich 33.

Another Robertson assist. I might be his lucky charm?

Lmao the UMich band doing their sieve chant absolutely drowned out by the pumped in music. Boo.

Wii Bowling, hockey edition.

UMD 6 loses an edge hardstyle. 5 breaks a stick but their equipment manager is quick on the draw. He looks like a student.

Man, UMD just looks done. There goes 24 down the tunnel too.

Holy takedown at the net. Mich gows off for a hold.

I know you don't mean it in a bad way/view it differently but not sure we need to be openly celebrating the success of guys who quit on us.
buddy you need to accept that people feel differently than you do about Robertson leaving. not everyone has been sworn to a permanent blood feud. he didn't divorce you.

obviously some people think that transferring out is not an unforgivable sin. we got two good years and he made a choice that he thought was in his interest. sounds like normal human behavior.

as is yours, to be clear, but jfc stop lecturing everyone about how much more bitter they should be.

Not telling anyone to be bitter. Just asking if it's really necessary to be celebrating his success on Michigan. At this point I'm trying to take the middle ground and just ignore him.

to be very fair BL, you did kinda mention in the Casty/Walsh thread that there are a ton of considerations to going pro early vs finishing at Cornell. many of the same apply to transfers. he made the decision he felt was in his best interest, as a hockey player and as a person. I don't hold a ton of ill will for that - especially because Veilleux is arguably better side-by-side.

I don't really go digging in Mich stats to point him out either - but when he has a good game in front of my eyes, well, I'd be remiss not to mention it.

(and as for the trolls - tbh the worst troll we've had before reopening the forums was arguably me or you lol, I forgot we have newcomers now 😂)

Go Blue indeed. Ben doing what Ben does. His blast on the first goal was impressive but not as impressive as the redirect.

It was easy to enjoy his goal with 2 seconds left on Friday. But the others are better understood and enjoyed on replay.

I definitely do take solace in the fact that Robertson has been disappointing this season at Michigan. The fact he went to a team with twice as much offensive talent and quarterbacked PP1 (after their former top defenseman got hurt ten games into the season), yet somehow put up worse numbers than his freshman year at Cornell, is pretty funny. He gets little to no hype from scouts (he actually got far more hype two years ago). There will be no NHL career for Ben Robertson. I certainly hope getting to the NHL wasn't his reasoning for transferring, because from that perspective it was a clear failure.

Quote from: stereax on March 29, 2026, 04:25:37 PMNext up, I wanted to do something that I didn't manage to at LP - try some Stewart's ice cream. I housed part of it down with my face in the container at the bus stop... and had the rest this morning. Unfortunately my freezer liquified it but it was still DELICIOUS. 10/10 would recommend.

Having grown up in the Mid-Hudson Valley, I'm very sentimental about Stewart's.  A couple of Decembers ago I took the family there on the way home from snowshoeing in the Adirondacks, and they had a special called "July in Christmas" where you could get an ice cream cone or cup for a dollar or so.

I've found Sauerkraut in Germany to be less sour than what you get in the US, which makes the flavor less obnoxious.  But the bratwurst should be flavorful.  I'd blame the mustard.

Well, except for the two-game series we played at Walter Brown and Lynah in November of 2001 and 2002 when Schafer was building the Frozen Four team.  Those were awesome.

Sauerkraut in Europe has more flavor to it.  I would not say it is less sour, I would say the sourness also has all sorts of hues to it which makes it more interesting.

American sauerkraut just tastes like pickled socks.

Oops, I misspoke.  It was the 1980 tournament.  What inspired it was the fact that we upset BU in Boston in the (one-game) quarters.  So when we played Providence in the semis it became "Screw BU. Providence, too". When we played Dartmouth in the finals, it became "Screw BU. Providence, too. Dartmouth, too."  After winning that we played Northern Michigan in the NCAA tourney.  So we made it "Screw BU. Providence, too. Dartmouth, too. And NMU."

Unfortunately, the streak ended against NMU.  So we dropped back to "Screw BU. Dartmouth, too." for the consy. And that's the version that stuck.

As one of the "few of us" — Among other great games against BU, I'll always remember listening to the double-overtime 3-3 tie against BU in the Christmas Tournament in 1966.  As I assume most current eLynah posters weren't yet born, those were real twenty minute overtime periods, not the faux-hockey overtimes played today. I was in grad school back in Ithaca and listened on WHCU, Sam Woodside (I think) did the play-by-play from the Boston Arena. Ned and Kelly (?) decided that 100 minutes of hockey was enough, so Cornell and BU were declared co-champions.

I can't tell if you're being intentionally obtuse or if you're actually unaware of the most common reason a player would transfer from the ECAC/CCHA/AH to the Big 10/NCHC/HE.

Hardly.  I simply posted the only reporting out there that quotes Robertson.  He definitely mentioned cost, and must have mentioned oro hockey.  But he was definitely not quoted as saying he thought it was a better way to get to the show.  It's certainly possible that he thinks it's a better path to the NHL, but he either didn't say it, or the writers didn't decide to include it if that's the case

You on the other hand are again (for the bazillionth time) assuming things and ascribing notices to players based solely on your world view, and not what's actually known.

Quote from: BearLover on March 30, 2026, 09:26:34 AMI definitely do take solace in the fact that Robertson has been disappointing this season at Michigan.

I've only found 2 articles that discuss why he went to Michigan.

https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2025/11/26_Robertsons-Rare-Move-Brings.php

"A big factor in his decision was cost. Ivy League schools do not offer full-time athletic scholarships, so he felt that it was a lot to ask for his parents to pay for another full season of school. Meanwhile, the tuition kept increasing. "

No mention about getting to the NHL there.

https://mgoblue.com/news/2025/11/19/ice-hockey-scholar-stories-robertson-prepared-for-moment-making-seamless-transition-to-u-m

"Off the ice, Robertson is an economics major and would like to pursue a career in business after playing professional hockey. His parents have always preached the importance of academics, and Robertson believes that the value in earning a Michigan degree will only benefit him down the road."

Nor here.  And fair to say he will be able to play some level of pro hockey.

Where did I assume anything or "abscribe notice" to him? Quoting myself: "I certainly hope getting to the NHL wasn't his reasoning for transferring, because from that perspective it was a clear failure." For the record, I think it is overwhelmingly likely that Robertson wants to play pro hockey and that one of the reasons for the transfer was that playing in a tougher league will give him a better shot. Many on this very forum (not including myself) speculated that very thing at the time of the transfer, as did Jane McNally.

Final bit of travelogue for y'all:

Train ride! Really pleasant actually. I wish there was a rail service in Ithaca. I like trains.

Transferred over to the mall before my bus, had some time and wandered around playing Pokemon Go (got my medal for 2000 unique stops!) and... yeah I spent another $100 on hobby packs of 25-26 series 2. No, I didn't hit a Schaefer YG. But it was still a fun time. Destiny is really really nice and I enjoy wandering around a real mall from time to time.

Epilogue: had a doctor's appointment in Cortland (gross, ew) so I swung out here on the buses. Gotta be back in a few weeks too, extra gross and ew. But I'm currently sitting in Doug's Fish Fry because I was hungry and holy shit this was the best meal I've had all weekend bar NONE. If this place were in Ithaca... well idk if Cornell students would appreciate a dinky little fish fry place, but I sure as hell do! If you're in the area, absolutely come here.

In either case, thanks everyone for humoring my annoying posts over the weekend 💜 I love sharing my travels with people, but I'm not keen on classical social media most of the time. And, I mean, I can't think of anyone at the law school who'd care about my yammering, haha. Hopefully y'all enjoyed this little virtual visit to the Capital Region!

I desperately miss Doug's Fish Fry. They have a truck for events that sometimes pops up in Ithaca. Bed-Stuy Fish Fry is pretty close, and they just opened a third location that's way too close to our apartment in downtown Brooklyn for my own good.  :D

Doug's is a regular stop for us for takeout when they come to Ithaca. They are here quite regularly in the summer. They also have a nice location in Skaneateles.

Nice travelogue! Been along time since we traveled in upstate NY by train. The last passenger train serving Ithaca ended service in 1961. I used to travel from Syracuse to Albany by train occasionally in the 1970s.

The Skaneateles location was the original, and for a long time, the only location. It opened in the early 80s, and I think it must have been about ten years before they opened a second restaurant.

Doug (Clark) was a real guy, and I saw him frequently when visiting the Skaneateles restaurant in the mid 80s and early 90s. He died perhaps eight or ten years ago.

I don't like fish, but their chicken, hot dogs, fries, and onion rings provide plenty of options for me. Great food!

DOCTORS are gross and ew. Cortland was quite alright, at least the bit of it that I saw.

Cornell beat #1 BC in the 1980 ECAC quarters, not BU, but beat BU three days before at BU in the regular season finale.

[That team also managed to lose at Clarkson, 14-6!]

Now that you say it, you're right.  We needed to beat BU simply to get into the tournament.

I can't win, can I 😂

If it makes you feel better, I gotta be back there in like 2 weeks, and I have a makeup class I'm absolutely going to miss because the bus system sucks 💜
