I can... I swear there had to be like 4 games where we'd be up like 2-0, 3-0 in the 3rd and then the defense would absolutely fall asleep and Alexis would have no chance.
Note to self, 4 pm start means 4 pm start, not 3 pm start.

Horrible first 10 minutes—-no answer for Harvard's forecheck. On the PK, looked like 3 Cornell players overplayed the strong side and left the weak side almost completely unguarded, directly leading to the goal. Much better final 10 minutes, but Cornell is fortunate the refs missed a blatant interference by Stanley. On the whole, lucky the game is tied but at least trending in a positive direction.

This was, by far, the loudest I've heard the Faithful on a tv broadcast. I think a lot of cheering just doesn't come through, but this was the first game I've seen that made me feel like the crowd was up to the old standards.
Maybe having a third game was worth it.
Me too. I couldn't tell if they cranked up the crowd volume or if the fans were somehow just much louder? Seemed like a great atmosphere.
Much louder. Fucking banger atmosphere.
I love beating Harvard.

Great game. I wasn't much help today because my voice was shot after the previous two games and Ivy madness but the rest of the crowd made up for me.
I was so sure the Walsh goal was coming back I didn't even celebrate, clear kicking motion, at least from the section B angle, but I'll take it. Also loved the Castagna header, even though it won't get him on the scoresheet.
On to placid!

It looked like a kick to me too from C, I barely celebrated. Also, it was Casty with the header? Lolll.

Cornell got past Harvard on Sunday to complete the ECAC's four-some in Lake Placid. And according to our Probability Matrix, the Big Red are now a lock for the NCAAs. Other teams hinge on the bubble. Check out the current NPI, and use You Are the Committee to see what will happen based on next weekend's final results.

Pretty sure they didn't have it looked at because all they could review for is a major penalty, and it probably wasn't up to that level. And/or they had no video of it.
Yeah, it looked bad, but I think it would've been a two minute minor for roughing at most, and you can't call that on a review.
If they reviewed it they would have seen the Stanley dive as well. I guess if either ref saw it they considered it a wash

Kraft has been playing like his ass is on fire, to start. Apparently he always has and I just haven't been paying enough attention...
But also, I don't know if anything has meaningfully changed with him besides the pucks going in. The dude was snakebit in the fall, iirc.
Kraft has been a great player since day 1.
Interesting tidbit: the game box score on CHN show Donovan Ott as one of the assistant referees (what we used to call linesmen back in the day). I assume that's the same Donovan Ott who about 8 years ago was a Cornell commit who ended up switching to RPI and then finished his career at D3 Utica. My recollection is he didn't blossom in juniors and was likely told by the Cornell staff that they no longer had room for him.

HO-LY. That game was so much more Friday and much less Saturday than I was hoping for. Most of the game was played in front of me and since Cornell only shoots that way once it made for a pretty uncomfortable watch.
I thought Cornell did a much better job using the glass to clear pucks early on instead of looking for a high forward to tip the puck clear or worse, trying to pass through the middle. They lost a lot of positional battles in front of the net though. On both Harvard goals against Cornell had the numbers but the defenders weren't able to check the sticks. Gosh that St Louis kid is stealthy.
I was really glad that they didn't let allowing the first goal fester. I wanted nothing to do with playing from behind.
One thing I saw a couple of times too many was drop passes after crossing into their zone. Both times it went the other way. That's never the play.
The final twelve minutes of the second was when Cornell finally turned the tables. I thought a power play goal there at the end would be game over. They didn't score and as a result they spent the entire third period facing wave after wave.
As for the two goals scored during that stretch first I bring you my new segment...
VEILLEUXfromK
I really enjoy how they are able to deploy that kid. He's up ahead of the play on breakouts. He's down below the dots on the power play. He has a lot of forward tendencies in many situations. He hasn't been immune to the freshman valleys but he has the potential to be a true difference maker as he continues to mature. I thought it was too bad that they couldn't credit him with the Walsh goal because he basically shot that puck to ricochet it in off of Walsh. It had so much velocity that Walsh couldn't react to it if he wanted to actively try to tip it in. Beautiful set up. Back to my regular post...
That was a huge hit by Ryan that led to the Fisher goal. Compared to our big guys he looks on the smaller side but he's had a couple of bone crunchers lately. Nice job coming off the wall and finding the open man.
Fisher has really started to settle in. He has those moments that make you scratch your head but now that we are seeing the offensive side of his game he's showing he can be a well rounded player. Combine that with the solid play of Ashton and it was a major win for Cornell in grabbing those guys from the transfer portal.
That Cournoyer save on the breakaway was so huge. He was terrific down the stretch. Very calm and poised.
I'm glad Harvard pulled the goalie because there was no way Cornell was getting any breathing room otherwise. There have been a couple of extra exciting empty netters this year with the Castagna beating everyone down the ice earlier this season and now the goal post with bodies diving for the loose puck. I'm hoping this Castagna empty netter to cap the home portion of the season isn't his final Lynah goal but I guess that's for another post.
That celebration was what we have waited all year for. I was a bit worried because Pirtle leapt onto an unsuspecting Cournoyer and he rammed his back into the crossbar. He reached back it looked like in pain so hopefully it's nothing. He seemed ok as he brought up the rear during the victory lap.
This was the kind of weekend we've been asking for (not the playing a third game part). Full barn. Students and pep band participation. Would have been interesting to compare it to if Colgate had been the opponent. Felt like everyone behaved themselves too.
My last gripe is that the game ends and it's exciting and we're all relieved and then they decide to pipe in the loud radio music. The band had done such a nice job all weekend beating it back. That IS NOT the time for it. Let the moment breath. It's not like they had a song that they rallied around (Gloria anyone?). The place was rocking. That was the only soundtrack you needed there. Thankfully the crowd was able to drown it out eventually but there's no need to take away from that moment with Jock Jams.
I'm pretty sure I've attended my last game of the year. Hope that you folks traveling next week have a great time. Let's three-peat!

I agree, in that we were clearly the better team over the course of 60 minutes but the precarity for so much of the game - including the mild tension of a two-goal lead that becomes bone-chilling when it drops to one.
QuoteOne thing I saw a couple of times too many was drop passes after crossing into their zone. Both times it went the other way. That's never the play.
You're obviously exaggerating so don't take my response to be taking you literally, but it is very often the play but it requires a lot more awareness of where everyone is to deploy. If the trailer isn't right there, you're just leaving the puck for
whoever and that is the same kind of assumption of the best case scenario that I see when our team tries to clear by rifling the puck behind the net and up the boards. Quick decision-making is key to being effective but I think we have some go-to moves that are much higher risk than they need to be. Like you, I prefer when we bang it off the glass to clear.
QuoteThat Cournoyer save on the breakaway was so huge. He was terrific down the stretch. Very calm and poised.
He's had some shaky plays after a breakout start but this was a Cournoyer W. Our defense was basically "break but don't bend" - we controlled most of the play but when there was a slip-up, no half-measures - we were leaving Courns to save everyone and he did, over and over. Incredible late signing.
Onward and northward. Time to get our revenge on Princeton for ruining the weekend after our blowout of Q.

I generally have a distaste for going backwards with the puck unless you are going for a change or you have established possession in the zone. Especially at this level I think the success rate is not good enough. Our guys except maybe Castagna don't cross the opponents blue line with enough speed to back guys in and create the space necessary to make a drop pass effectively. There were two times in yesterday's game. DiGiulian dropped it right after he entered the zone and it went the other way and I can't remember if it was Ryan or Major who did it also and instead of a zone possession it became a turnover. The play is to get deeper into the zone. A play like that against a good team can be costly.

With the QF series win, Cornell has now beaten Harvard four times in a single season -- only the second time that has happened. The other time was 2009-10, and the Big Red went on to win the ECAC tournament.
I could also mention at this point that the only time Harvard ever beat Cornell four times in the same season was 1993-94, and the Crimson won the ECAC tournament that year -- but really, why would anyone bring that up?

To be fair, a lot of that I think was carryover from Gaudet's last recruits, and he was very visibly and vocally trying to get his players off the ice after the fireworks started.

unfortunately I think there's someone else who the Faithful have appointed as their new Fan Favorite...
The Faithful or Stereax?? 😆😆
The Faithful.
As evidenced by their many, many chants about Hiscock.
(Who, for the record, is also one of my favorite guys of the class, but not because of the last name.)
My favorite happened in game 2, I'm pretty sure. Forgot who the other player was, but Jason essentially said, "Pirtle brings it across the line, looks for the pass, but can't find Hiscock..."

Healey had a noticeably rough series and some visibly bad shifts. I don't know if he did anything specific to draw the ire of the crowd in game 3 but he was getting attention in a bad way with his play

Oh no we'd been going at him since game 1 😇
Genuinely, the Jocks of Section C just chose three or four guys (Tresco, St Louis) and started harping on them all weekend long. They got a "Healey sucks" going that the whole rink joined in on. More than once. I think at one of those points it was close to the end of game 3 😭

Only on the Commons, which is where several Cornell students go out now along with the IC ones
There is not a single pizza place, or at least one that is open late, in Collegetown now?
I don't frequent Collegetown much these days, but at a minimum CTB is open late and makes pizza bagels. (So not really pizza, but in a pinch...)
Isn't DP open late for basically just pizza?
It is a shame that the internet & smartphones have ruined campus socializing - and thereby late-night pizza availability! There used to be roaming groups of 10 people moving all around Collegetown after hockey games going from the Nines to Johnny's or from the Chariot to Dunbar's. Could even get a good "Let's Go Red!" chant going in any of those places when a new group arrived. Right up til 1:30 AM. Progress sucks.

I'm still trying to figure out socializing. Mixed results. People in the law school don't like hearing about the NHL trade deadline or my thoughts on the ECAC. :(
But more generally, especially post-covid it's been
tough to find things to do with other people in real life. I genuinely don't know if most of my colleagues have a life. I don't think they do? And I think I'm doing okay for myself between trivia on Thursdays and centering my nonacademic life around hockey in all shapes and sizes (and sometimes other Cornell sports too, if they strike my fancy). I have no idea what other people do. If they do anything at all besides study, some of these people reach levels of nerddom that I can't even fathom.
...Then again, don't ask me about my summer internships. Or my grade transcript. Or if I generally do anything once I get home from class besides graze on whatever's in my fridge and then collapse into bed exhausted.
...I haven't done groceries in like, a month. Jesus.
...I think I'm oversharing again?
But, I mean - point stands. Tech boom + covid migrating so much stuff online = limited in-person third spaces and shit. And no more 24/7 establishments.

I do feel bad in that way for today's students; they won't ever know how hopping Collegetown used to be every Friday & Saturday night. The supply was there because the demand for pizza & beer was high. And the hockey or hoop game was just the start of a long night out for so many. We had Souvlaki House and 3 more Italian places on the other side of Eddy Street alone: The Chariot, Sa's Place & a full Italian restaurant, Little Joe's. College Ave had Oliver's, CTB, Ruloff's & the Nines; Johnny's was up on Dryden. Celebrating hockey wins in Collegetown was a group event. And it is ironic that maybe this forum has replaced those actual group experiences with a more-convenient way to interact without the pizza, beer or memories.

I agree with everything you wrote, except for Sa's Place being Italian. While Sa's definitely served subs, like a meatball parm (my go-to), I don't think anyone would really consider it Italian. It was just a really good sub shop.
Of note: Sa opened a few places in Ithaca. He'd open one, sell it, and then open another. I am almost positive he was also responsible for a place similar to Sa's that was open near the old Octopus downtown. If my memory serves it may have been called "King Subs."
I believe it was in the building where Eta Pie is now.(https://i.ibb.co/Ngp0tJyr/Screenshot-20260316-233624-Google.jpg)

The Palms was on Dryden too. And a solid post-game group would head all the way to Stewart and Chapter House, back when they 1) brewed their own beer and 2) existed.
The most "unified Cornell" I ever felt was the playoff run Schafer's first year when there were 5 teams all vying for 4 home playoff slots and not losing. Heading down the hill into C-Town from Lynah, the Dino's "club" type crowd would already be out on the streets and they'd see hockey garb and screamed "who won??" (remember, no pocket internet). They'd get the good news and yelled in the full streets! At least 3 "pizza by the slice" joints open until about 2am + Jason's Deli. I think Wendy's on the College & Dryden corner was open late, too.
Shortstop Deli up until 2019-2020 had a digital counter displayed with the amount of time since they had last been closed...It was decades. When I heard they changed their 24-7 hours permanently, it was a gut punch that things were REALLY changing. That was something you could ALWAYS count on.

Man. Yeah, literally the only place that rings a bell is Souvlaki - which is still one of the best bites in town on my spreadsheet. And CTB, obviously.
Coming from the home of 24/7 diners, absolute gut punch to learn there's nothing like that anymore when I first got up here. Honestly if Shortstop were open past midnight I'd probably be there once or twice a month at like, 2 am with the munchies.
Lots of late nights ended with SS/hals and State diner food back in the day. Went to the Greek house more than the Souvlaki house. The chariot and the nines for pizza and wasnt there one more sit down pizza place back in the 90s in college town?

Mama T's had the better late night atmosphere as compared to Collegetown Pizza back in my day. Plus, you occasionally got to see someone drop a pizza on its way to the oven, dust it off, and throw it in anyway.

In an "it shouldn't be this easy" attempt to bring the thread drift all the way back around, I offer this photo, taken at the Ithaca Wegmans, very likely by eLynah's own mha, as the photo appeared on his 14850.com site:

When I heard they changed their 24-7 hours permanently, it was a gut punch that things were REALLY changing. That was something you could ALWAYS count on.
For me, it was when I heard Wegmans wasn't open 24/7 any longer lol
Preach. 29 of the first 31 years of my life, I lived within 5 miles of one Wegmans or another. I took countless trips during the graveyard shifts. It was always there for me. Such a shame.
There are a ton of Wegmans in the DC area, but I tell people here that they never got to experience Wegmans in the days when they had the photo developing, dry cleaning, video rental, daycare and and garden store too.
