Title: Cornell at Princeton 2/21/26
Post by: billhoward on February 21, 2026, 03:11:13 PM
Excellent chance to build on the season's best game, Friday's xxx5-1xxx 6-1 takedown of Quinnipiac. We only beat the Tigers 2-1 five weeks ago at Lynah, bit they were riding highish back then, 7-4 ECAC vs. 10-8-1 and fighting for the final first-round bye. Going in, ECAC points, every team with 19 of the 22 league games played:
Quinnipiac   44
Cornell      41
Dartmouth    41
Harvard      32
Princeton    32
Union        30
Others       27 down to 16

If Cornell earns 1 point of the 9 available in the final 3 games, we get the first round bye.  First, we have to take care of the Tigers tonight. We also can hope for a Q stumble against Colgate, @Dartmouth or @Harvard. Princeton closes @Harvard, @Dartmouth.

Don't be jerks. If  you're at the Princeton game tonight. It's their senior night. About a decade back, some of the Cornell fans who stuck round razzed the Princeton team. This is a special moment for the Princeton players and their parents / siblings. I thought it was embarrassing.

Much better was the cheer a couple years before. We were shutting out a mediocre Princeton squad in their rink, the final seconds were about to tick down, but first a faceoff, and in the quiet of the moments before the puck-drop, one of ours yelled out to the captain, "Hey, Hobey, your team sucks, it's Friday night, and you can't score." That was okay.

The band should be making one of its rare appearances at Princeton tonight, so that'll be a nice change

Actually, Cornell already has the first-round bye.  Harvard and Princeton would both have to make up 9 points in their remaining 3 games to knock the Big Red out of the top four, and that can't happen since those two teams still have to play each other.

I'll be there with sis (Cornell '01) and the next three admissions files already in progress:

• Niece 1 — Cornell '37
• Niece 2 — Cornell '39
• Niece 3 — Cornell '42

Twenty-five of us total.

Pretty amazing shot from the camera directly above the net. The puck fell from above that camera straight down onto our man looking for it in the crease.

In the rink, it's evident that part of the Princeton university charter was that you must play terrible music at the loudest possible volumes with a tinny speaker set and bad acoustics.  Hobey approve this?

As to the game, can someone please tell Charlie Major to be more direct. No more hero puck.

I mean, it's their senior night. All things being considered, makes sense they'd work their tails off for this one. We seem to have trouble after highly emotional games too. Wouldn't be surprised if the Red were coming off the emotional high and exhausted too.

That being said, this was a DEEPLY frustrating game to watch, especially because most of their goals were either Absolute Fluke Plays or Absolute Defensive Breakdowns. Ringing the posts ane crossbars doesn't help, either.

Especially given where we're hanging in the balance right now, simply can't be coughing up points like this. Really, really need a sweep next weekend. Both SLU and Clarkson are Not Good, but again, we seem to have trouble getting 6 on those weekends.

Anyways. I'm gonna go scream into a paper bag for a few minutes, then see what other hockey is on. I hate being emotionally invested in teams. This sucks.

I tried being a Mariners fan, fun fact.

Turns out I despise baseball too much to actually care about a team. It's DREADFULLY boring. Similar to soccer and basketball, sorry to say.

Banana ball, on the other hand, is great. And I chose the right team there, the Party Animals :)

Not sure I agree. Watching at home is usually better than being there for this sort of observation so I could be wrong but at the rink it felt like our energy was meh and we could establish little effective zone time. Lots of east west hero puck. Natural result is breakaways the other way.  way.

Possible trap game syndrome also and Princeton is a decent to good team at home on senior night with Ben behind the bench so not the worst loss big picture. Dont buy the tired argument.  I'm old so I'm tired. They're young.

So now we're basically at the stage of beat SLU and we're in the tournament even with a loss to Clarkson. Lose both and we're in trouble.

You want to win both to be safe. But either way, more likely that we also need to have a decent ECAC playoff showing.

Cornell didn't play terrible but didn't play great either. Too many defensive breakdowns or miscues along with a fluke goal that changed the complexion of the game. Cornell looked mostly ineffective offensively after the 1st thanks to a combination of neutral zone traps, goaltending, and posts

That's my assessment, too.  That and a tendency to look for the pass first and the shot second, especially when they pulled Cornoyer.  But let's give credit where credit is due:  Princeton played their asses off.  And we didn't.

I agree with this assessment. Ben knows these players inside and out, and their Senior Night, they played great and Cornell didn't bring it. While not the end of the world, this one stunk because of how high I was flying off that big win against Q, where we showed how to rise against a tough and talented team. This one was as disappointing to me as the loss to BU at MSG.
Lets take care of business against SLU and Clarkson.

What a stinky game.  None of the giddyap from just twenty four hours earlier.  Cornell lost the race up the ice all night.  It was a disappointing flip of the script.  They played two plus bad periods last night.  It made me almost forget how high their ceiling can be.  No balance throughout the lineup and the goalie getting hung out to dry is a bad recipe.  Them not finishing the deal last night takes the luster off of Friday
