Title: Cornell @ Union, 2/14/26
Post by: stereax on February 13, 2026, 10:04:41 PM
Happy Valentine's Day.

If the hockey team would like to give us a big happy Valentine's Day gift, three points would be excellent 💜

Regulation win. Please.

Have we lost a game in regulation since Stereax started starting the threads? (Too lazy too check, but I don't think we have.) Assuming that is the case, THIS is the thread we should be using.

Lines for tonight! (https://x.com/i/status/2022810487931457663)

Feels like I (almost) called Arseneault drawing in. Murray 3rd line, that's a choice.

Union's top scorer is out tonight. Capitalize.

I have heard the anthem sung operatically.

I have heard the anthem sung tone deaf.

But never both.

There was nothing to suggest that the goal should've been overturned. What concerned me more was that the goal scorer had all day to spin around and shoot.

I don't recall which thread you discussed that Xavier Veilleux should have been given #15. SO I will post this here instead.

Due to the fact that WRPI is not broadcasting today's game because the announcers had to be with their wives for Valentine's Day, I decided to listen to an RPI recruit's game. I picked Saginaw (OHL) since the game started at the same time. Future RPI D James Guo (Go, James Guo!) plays there. Near the end of the first period Saginaw's Xander Velliaris got a double minor penalty for slew footing. He wears 17. :)

Devils have this problem too.

At some point, it's not "every goalie we face is Ken Dryden". It's "we suck at scoring".

But fr, do we just have the yips or something? Are the guys too hyped up watching the Olympics? Did the women's team "take the braincell" of being competent?

It's incredibly rare that we have a Cornell season without a slump, especially one with freshman playing prominent roles. Usually the slump happens after a holiday tournament. But frosh aren't automatically going to maintain their debut levels. It's a grind, and they grow into it, but if this is a slump, I'd rather have it in early Feb. than March.

I found a replay of my Volts playing the Newfoundland Regiment a few weeks ago so I put it on to half-watch while fucking around on my phone. The announcers were yapping as they do. Shoulda seen how my head SNAPPED up from my screen when they brought up the Newfoundland prodigy, Reegan Hiscock...

Most likely they were never actually good and just played a very easy schedule and didn't dominate anybody in that schedule, they basically just barely beat a bunch of bad teams and are now reverting to the mean.

Similar concept tbh. We actually have zero good wins this season. We tied Dartmouth (beating them in OT at home is equivalent to a tie), lost handily to Quinnipiac, beat a bunch of mediocre to bad teams and didn't dominate the metrics in basically any of them. Dartmouth/Harvard weekend was when I thought we might actually be a top 10 team but that was illusory, in part because Dartmouth and Harvard have been bad since then.

I wish we had better stats the CHN's xG metric but I suspect if you plotted all the teams' xG minus xGA and adjusted for SOS we'd be middle of the pack. So that explains why we're tying RPI and getting crushed by Union despite our "good record."

That's what this game feels like. They just don't have any spark. They first half of the first period was decent, and they've been lackluster since then. Walsh had lots of open ice to beat a defender at one point, and he didn't take it. He's normally all over that kind of opportunity.

I'm reminded of a game in Burlington in the 90s, when the team was apparently phoning it in. We found out later that about 7 players had the flu. They did turn it on for the last seven minutes to overcome a big deficit and win....

It makes more sense to theorize illness as a reason for a lack of energy than to say a collection of guys who have spent the majority of their lives working on this team, have excellent coaching and many of whom have been drafted by NHL teams, have suddenly turned to shit for no reason.

I have seen in the past how illness sweeping through the team has taken the spark out of Cornell. This performance is consistent with those past events.

The flu has officially hit the coaching staff as well. Clearly should have pulled the goalie at the outset of the PP but they decided to wait until the PP expired and there are 3 minutes left in the game down by 3 goals.

7 third period shots is horrible when you're down three. It seems like every game the other team blocks twice as many shots as we do. Major again sucked on faceoffs, which isn't gonna work. And horrendous IQ and effort from Stanley to give them that empty netter. Gonna get destroyed next weekend if we play like this.

They can't ice it if they don't have the puck because Cornell has 2 extra skaters. It is not even a close call, you absolutely pull the goalie there. The game is effectively over if Cornell doesn't score on the PP. Casey has seemed metrics-savvy thus far but this was a total mistake

The issue for us is we have a weak league schedule and it turns out a weak ooc schedule.  As such, no good wins and literally any loss (except Q) turns out to be bad, even BU and perhaps Umass.  Leaves you no margin for error.

Not to guilt trip you but I am barely even kidding, I'm holding on by a fuckin thread right now and that thread is remembering there are still games at Lynah this semester that I'd like to see before I fully tailspin into the abyss. That and also I'm at my parents' place right now. The Sun write-up is out, no mention of any flu but Casey thinks the first goal should have been overturned:
https://www.cornellsun.com/article/2026/02/no-9-men-s-hockey-deflates-in-4-1-loss-to-union

Interview of the post-game: https://youtu.be/bKgc5ijcy58?si=o3fgsjtGb0Bf2zO8

If somebody wants to post the overturned goal from the Colgate game then maybe the jurors of ELynah can compare the calls to see if Casey has a point.

TBH, questions about the reffing are a distraction from the fact we played RPI and Union evenly on consecutive nights, which is embarrassing for a team with tournament aspirations. The offense looks lost. While Casey is correct that Cornell outshot them the first period, Union handily outshot Cornell the rest of the game and that is inexcusable when you're playing from behind. Cornell looked awful at all phases of the game this weekend. Maybe they'll surprise me vs Quinnipiac but at this point I'm mostly praying we can go 2-0-1 in the other games and stay within striking distance of the NCAA tournament heading into the playoffs.

Yep.

Cornell hasn't looked like itself lately. Watching last night's game was more painful than my last root canal — and at least with a root canal they give you drugs and promise it'll be over in 30 minutes.

But that doesn't define this team. It might  be a travel rut, sickness, minor injuries piling up, prelims, no present on Valentine's Day, we don't know. They've got two days off from classes, some time to rest, reset, and get their jump back. We've seen what this group can do when they're engaged. I'll be satisfied if they come out next weekend and absolutely empty the tank against Q-Pak and Princeton.

And perspective matters. It's not like we're watching some once-in-a-generation heartbreak spiral. This is a team that earned something real this year - we are IVY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!! And so are the women!!

That's not nothing. Let's not diminish that because of a few bad games. If they rest up, clean up the details, get in front of the net, get in front of the net, and get in front of the net, they can absolutely steady the ship. And if they do?

Deep breath. Four more regular season games. Go Big Red.

Great post!

That game was so sloppy that they barely resemble the team of just a few weeks ago.  It's amazing that nobody is going right now (except Keopple).  While they have squandered their cushion for an at large bid, I take comfort that there are six games left to get a head of steam going into Lake Placid.  If the team from last year proved anything it's that the best time to peak is in March.

In defense of the new rink, at least the PA system wasn't at the eardrum-blasting level it was at RPI the night before. The Union folks (or whomever) also let the Cornell pep band play quite a bit. We even got to hear the alma mater, which the band never got a chance to play Friday night at RPI.

Lower volume but very hard to decipher the words.  I think it was a fill in announcer at Union.

RPI's audio was so loud in '24 and '25 that we moved our season tickets.  The dope who was the rink manager was replaced.

You heard the new gentler RPI sounds on Friday,  D!

Union's rink holds about the same number as the old rink but with end zone seating.  There are only 7 rows A through G.  The incline between rows is severe - we estimated 30 inches.  It's hard to see the other side of the rink due to the extreme rake.  If the person next to you toward the far side of the rink leans it cuts off your view. The seats are oddly narrow. My spine ached a bit after the first period.  Seats were fine for my petite wife but she also felt skewed due to the size of the woman sitting next to her.
