Title: Cornell vs Colgate, 2/7/26

Get ready for either the cleanest game of hockey ever... or some VINTAGE crimebaggery. No in between.

Interesting position.  We come off one of the worst games we have ever played, and yet...

No need to play the game according to the ECAC website, they must REALLY have been afraid it would get out of hand.

Every time we play in Hamilton, we discover the whimsical style of John McGraw as if it was for the first time. He's always been like that, and for my money one of the best at combining hockey knowledge with dry wit.

Surgery yesterday, complications today (and no, I'm not dying).

But doubtful that I'll make tonight's game. Didn't make last night's in I don't remember how many years. After all Hamilton is closer to me than Ithaca.

Anyway, that means no newspapers or Snickers unless someone(s) else is volunteering.

If you're near Syracuse, I've got a bag of papers and Snickers for you.

If you're further away, I could probably meet you somewhere, but couldn't drive all the way to Ithaca.

So all you true fans out there, it's time.

You can text me at 315-877-1180 if you can help.

There is precedence in the program.  Top scorer Greg Miller was scratched after the team had a bad Friday game and they were brutally flat and lost a game to Brown that they had no business losing.  I was never more mad as a Cornell fan than that night.

My understanding is:

Game misconduct - you can come back the next game
Game disqualification - you are banned from the next game too

I'm pretty sure I'm right, so if I am... where Walsh?

Ryan did something i've never seen: not exactly a drop pass, but a short pass and then a charge at the goal between the circles, clearing a path and creating a screen for Gio to follow him down the pipe and snipe up top.

Playing at Lynah rink, sometimes you kind of bet on the home crowd and emotion to get you over the line. We're in the red at the blackjack table but we've got a pretty fat stack of cash in our pocket and perhaps some liquid confidence and a hottie by our side.

For the NPI degenerates among us (myself included), we are still 8th in NPI. To drop into that 13th-15th danger zone, we'd need to shed 1.5 NPI points. Even dropping Q and Clarkson, winning out the rest, only puts us at a shed of 0.5 NPI points.

So unless we really fuck up, we should make the NCAAs without having to win the ECACs.

It is absolutely ridiculous that Walsh got a whole extra game for an after whistle scrum, not to mention all of the other calls tonight that didn't go our way.

Even though I'm not too mad, it does suck to walk 30 minutes round trip in 0 degree weather to watch us lose, even though the game was entertaining and we had a lot of fun with Dyck.

The main thing about our game that bothered mean was that even though Veilleux ALWAYS looks for the slap pass on the power play, nobody was ready for it and that cost us two easy goals (usually Walsh is back door to put it home). Cournoyer needs to work on his rebound control too, he consistently gives up juicy rebounds to the most dangerous parts of the ice, and Colgate probably could have had a couple more from that. Also the dicking around in our own zone in OT that led to the game losing turnover was ridiculous.

On the road at the capital district next weekend won't give us a big chance to move up in the NPI, but luckily going to OT tonight helped us not drop like a brick. Too soon to look ahead to the NCAAs, so just keep winning for now. Maybe I'll try to finally make the capital district trip since it's February break.

Get well soon Jim, we missed you today.

Anyways, I think if you said to a Cornell fan "Yeah by the third period of the Saturday game, both Walsh and Castagna are out and you still get it to OT and almost win it", that fan would first get REALLY concerned about our centers and then, when consoled that they are healthy, be relieved about squeaking out that point.

Also let's talk about how terrible Colgate is that they manage to get the refs to hand them a 5 minute major and proceed to not only blow the major by taking penalties, they ALSO got deleted by Caton Ryan during it.

Freshman forward Chase Pirtle was in the crease, making contact with Colgate netminder Reid Dyck, and that was a no-go for the referees. The goal was immediately waved off for goaltender interference, but Cornell promptly challenged the play, insisting that the Raider defenseman pushed Pirtle in and did not allow him a path out.

Unfortunately for the Red, that wasn't how the officials saw it. No-goal for Kraft was the call and to overtime the Red would go. Norlin took matters into his own hands soon thereafter.

"I mean, the [Colgate] kid's got his stick right up underneath [Pirtle's] gut and pushed him right into [the goaltender]," Jones said. "So I'm going to get clarification from the league, but I don't know. I don't know where he was supposed to go. I don't know."

Interesting thing McNally mentions, though:

Cornell was already down its top-line center: junior forward Ryan Walsh — nabbed for a major cross-checking call the night prior — who was reportedly suspended by the ECAC, the only Division I hockey conference that does not make suspension information publicly available.

1) Why isn't this made public?
2) Wasn't five and a game enough already for a crosscheck that slipped high?

And the pile of players that got pushed across the blue line to gain the zone had the puck carrier in the back.

Shocked there wasn't a look to see if that was offsides.

But then again, the refs were absolute ass all weekend.

Hoping we don't see Colgate again, because fuck that.

That's quite mild and IMO inarguably true.

Blaming officiating is the second-to-last refuge of the incompetent, but I saw ample reason to allow our goal.  Pirtle was steered into the goalie and he had no way to get out of it.

I don't have any issues with the Walsh and Castagna calls, however.  If they make Casty a DQ and we lose him next Friday sucks for us but... don't do that.

Cornell had poor discipline.  They started petty fights or took the bait to join one a lot.  They didn't forecheck very much.  Colgate's OT goal happened because a Cornell puck carrier wandered into a corner, volunteering himself to be boxed in. Colgate jumped on what was given them and scored.

The 2nd was the worst period of hockey I've ever seen.  The referees' constant and interminable conferences with the coaches and each other, with team captains, cheerleaders, Zamboni operators, etc. (one was over 10 minutes) ground whatever attention was left for the game itself into dust.  How to lose friends and alienate people.

When did this start? In the old days refs made their call and that was  it.  If a coach didn't like it, too bad.

That goal interference call is pretty bizarre given the calls I have seen happen all year on those types of play.

The D is riding the Cornell kid from 3-4 ft out of the crease all the way thru to the goalie and has his stick around him to control him.  Not sure what else he could have done other than fall down once they started gliding.  Once they got into the crease which he can do then what he could have done other than what he did. He tried to not hit the goalie but the D gave him no out and is clearly pushing him

I'm assuming that the league can "clarify" calls made by refs; for instance, to explain what Pirtle was "supposed" to do there, for Casey and others' future reference when coaching.

From complaining with others after the game, I heard (anecdotally, so take this with as much salt as you want) that it wasn't called off because Pirtle didn't get steered into the net - he did - but the call was that he "didn't make enough effort" to counteract that, and thus GI could stand.

Me, deadpan: so what's he supposed to do then, become fuckin Superman and fly to the other side of the rink?

Honestly, more okay with the Castagna call - in that basically everyone in the rink knew the minute he hammered that kid, tensions were boiling all the way over, especially after the shift I want to say JUST before where one of our guys learned assault is apparently fully legal if it's on ice.

Now, it was on the D/E side boards, so one of my blind spots and I didn't actually really see that hit, so I can't speak as to how dirty it was or anything like that. Hit from behind is a strange penalty in general too, don't kmow if I've seen it more than maybe Mack's Yale 5+game last year. (Wait, no, that was contact to the head. Point still stands.)

But if you're reffing this shitshow, just in general... how the hell do you let it even get to that point? How do you not even think to tell both coaches "next kid to start shit is getting a game" and enforce that? Hell, on both sides if need be. They had no issue giving Gio and Hiscock (and those other guys from Colgate) misconducts at the end of last game. (Sure, you can say it was the end of the game, but still!)

Yeah, there was a mugging / response mugging.

But they didn't call any penalties. If you don't call anything, what's the point of explaining it forever? Just drop the puck.

Very disappointed with inconsistency in the refs calls in this game ...   Casty got nailed for the hit from behind but I felt like the Colgate player embellished a bit and it was a lot less than Colgate had been laying on Casty throughout his play up to that point!

The take down on Hoyt in OT happened right in front of where I sit in N and looked like a tackle.

Still our lack of control of our tempers is a lesson for our young team.   I am hoping we learn and move on!

I think we mostly default to the "I'm blind, I'm deaf, I wanna be a ref" chant. Sometimes "refs you suck". We pulled out both of those last night. (Haven't heard the rope/tree one, personally.)

For a chant to "hit", it needs to have a cadence and repetition.

I'd suggest "unemployment" in the four syllable cadence, but eh, that's weak and is too broad. "Go get LASIK"? Eh.

There's something percolating in the back of my head about the refs being so blind, they had... relations with animals because they thought those animals were their wives, but that's way overboard in the 2020s and way too long to fit to any cadence. Same idea with something playing along the lines of "zebras in the zoo". Especially so if there were a Black ref...

"Stripes get sniped"? (To the LGR cadence.) "Compensating"? (That one requires way too much explanation.)

Something with a circus? "Refs are clowns"? (Basic.)

I'll have to think.

If they missed the opportunity to do "Dyck! Hiscock!" to goalie-drive, then Lynah is slipping.

My favorite rendition was (Ryan) Smart-(Alex) Dumas, a Dartmouth sieve, circa 1997.

"We love Hiscock! You Suck, Dyck!" something something.

But the fish after the game against Harvard was fine?
Also not fine.

Agree with this. The fish and the tubes are funny, but they're easy to take too far. Once that happens, they lose their charm pretty quickly. And for christ's sake students, don't hit OUR players!!!

Chanting "Syphilis" at Willie Mitchell was up there.
There's a story behind this one, I presume...

The toothpaste tubes aren't even funny, they're just embarrassing and I really wish whichever moron house started them would stop.

I always enjoyed from my time [students point to our goale Parris Duffus] "Duffus!" [students point to opponent's goalie] "Doofus!"

I swear to God, I thought it was empty toothpaste boxes. Not actual, usable tubes. Can you imagine how much of a pain it would be to clean one of those if it broke open?

This regular season matchup has given us fits for years now.  They haven't had a regular season sweep vs Colgate since before the pandemic.

Based on that recent history I think a four point weekend would have been something to hope for earlier in the season when looking ahead.  Once they got the regulation road win on Friday though you would want to finish the deal at home on Saturday.

There were plenty of opportunities to take control of that game.  I was worried about getting dragged into scrums to get them off their game.  I wasn't expecting more self destructive moments though (Castagna major on top of the Walsh suspension).  Cornell has nice depth but it's really tough to replace the caliber of the players that they lost.

And the pile of players that got pushed across the blue line to gain the zone had the puck carrier in the back.

Shocked there wasn't a look to see if that was offsides.

They lost their timeout after the failed Kraft goal challenge right so they couldn't challenge for offside?

That makes sense, but wouldn't the refs look at it anyway because it was a huge play on a close call at the end of the game?

Or do they not do that. Would understand if not, kinda defeats the penalty for using your challenge, but it happens in a lot of sports.

I'm not sure Tom Brady could spiral an empty toothpaste tube tight enough to actually carry it over the glass.  Which means DU would start weighting them with batteries.  Don't give the apes any ideas.

Schafer more than once told us he just assumed someday shit on the ice would end a Cornell player's career.

(He had no idea it would more likely be an advertising ribbon. But, hey, #yellcornell is so clever.)

DU?

Batteries?
