Title: IHS Boys Hockey
Post by: The Rancor on February 04, 2026, 10:54:56 AM
In other local team news, the Ithaca High School Boys Varsity team is ranked number one in New York State, currently at 13-2. While there probably isn't a future Cornell Varsity player on the team, go check them out if you need more hockey in your life. They are 5-0 at home and 9-1 in the last 10 games.

There isn't much I love more than catching a spare hockey game. Thanks for letting us know, Rancor!

Have you ever been and how exactly does it work, tickets-wise, logistically, and all that? Is their rink really on that little island?

Yes, most home games are at the Cass Park rink, which has been enclosed since I was a kid, thankfully. I'm sure you can just show up and pay admission for regular season games. Playoffs might be different.

Stream or GTFO.

Those kids, the college players, and everybody under 40 now looks the same from my perspective.

They improve to 14-2 with a 5-1 win ever Cicero-North Syracuse.

Cass Park built 1972 provided overflow off-hours ice time for students for years when Lynah fans / intramural duffers were in thrall with a Cornell team that had gone unbeaten, we all thought with just a little more ice time we were the next Dan Lodboa '70 (three straight goals in the third period of the NCAA title game to lift Cornell to that unbeaten season). Lynah Rink cost $30 an hour to rent, $235 in today's money, Cass was cheaper, I recall. Plus available. Certainly after midnight. Gad, it was cold. I got my girlfriend to come twice. I think her sorority sisters dared her to do it. But twice?

The non-enclosed part of the original Cass Rink is because there were federal outdoor recreation funds available but in the case of rinks the outdoor part meant it had to be exposed to the elements. Roof, yes, walls all the way to the ground, no. The rest of Cass Park is gorgeous, lots of soccer fields, the lake and inlet, and walking trails. One of the reasons why Ithaca is a great place to live. Except right now 8am, Olympics opening day (for hockey), Ithaca is 3 degrees F vs. about 25 in metro NY.

Cass Park has been fully enclosed for a few years now.

After a big TCB win over CNS, Ithaca drops to 5th in NYS ranking.

Yes.  The OSLAD (Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development) funding says you have to leave the facility/venue as-proposed for 20 years.  That includes leaving up the plaque acknowledging the funding source for that long.
