Title: Cornell 2 Dartmouth 1 (OT), 1/23/26
Post by: stereax on January 23, 2026, 01:02:44 PM
Let's try not to end this game with a bench clearing brawl, eh?

Ok well exceptions can be made I'd pay to see a goalie fight in the NCAA

You're only about 28 years too late.

Wow.

December '98 is about four and a half years before I was born :)

Also, on TBRW, it's called the Leeor Shtrom Invitational (http://www.tbrw.info/seasons/1999/box19981204.pdf). I wish there were video.

Shtrom is now the head coach of the Elmira Aviators in the NAHL. (https://nahl.com/news/story.cfm?id=41431) Interestingly, Andrew Horn, one of the d-men on the team, is committed to Princeton.

I'm not sure why, but Ian Burt becoming an accounting professor is one of my favorite Cornell-hockey-related things.

My biggest secret is I get such a kick of dropping an "I wasn't born then" whenever people who are significantly older than I am reminisce about the past to me. It gets 'em every time.

Also, for the crowd: it is Fucking Cold out. My thumb still hurts from the cold and I was walking for maybe six minutes and have been sitting on the bus for at least five.

Glad to see we're still pressuring pretty well (other than the power play) and not playing too "deflated" After giving up the goal.

Quick observation on that Veilleux SOG.  He was given possession by surprise.  He was moving laterally.  He was far out.  Between the screen and the goalie position he had a window of about 3 seconds of arc.  And he nailed it; the goalie just gloved it.

That boy knows what he is about.

Cornell:

24 shots taken
9 blocks
8 saves
7 wide
0 goals

We had a strong period but this is a more responsible Dartmouth defense than usual.  Also note they weren't playing Gaudet-style Hack-a-Shaq.  They were playing it straight and going toe-to-toe.

I can't wait til Cashman moves to Hamden and that becomes just one problem.

You missed the middle 15 years of The System which was just the left wing lock with guys who couldn't hit tape-to-tape passes.  We won a lot but it was not otherwise compelling.

Is that true?  I thought it was a slightly positive outcome as opposed to a wholly positive outcome of a regulation win. Not to quibble but a win against a team ranked above you, even if in overtime should help at least a little. But hey I'm an artsy what do I know.

Is that a change from the pwr. I thought pwr counted a ot win as a lesser win and a shootout as a tie.

I can't think of Ian Burt without thinking of the guy who used to chant this in section B:

We were 11 going in. I believe winning at home in OT counts as .52 of a win. We fell to 12 mostly because Princeton lost to Bentley while Providence, who was right be behind us, beat BU.

Princeton is in free-fall now. They and Dartmouth have both come back down to earth. Speaking of which, Dartmouth continues to not impress. We badly out-chanced them tonight. Good game for us and it's too bad we couldn't break through before OT.

Hell of a game from
Kraft. Croteau was a beast for Dartmouth, only reason that game got to OT. I was surprised to see DiGiulian be replaced by Major at center, but they clearly don't trust him a ton, he only took four faceoffs. Great showing overall, tomorrow should be a good time at lynah. I've got my fish at the ready.

When I saw the line yahtzee irl the first thing I said was "who the fuck is taking a faceoff on that line?"

Looks like Casey had a similar sentiment, because I can't name a time I saw that line go out for a faceoff.

rocking night at Lynah!  excited for tonight, would be huge to sweep the weekend.  Big Red were all over Dartmouth last night and frankly looked like the better team.  I didnt have the sense that they were moving Digiulian off of center as much as they were creating a speed/skill line with him, Kraft and Walsh. Those guys were absolutely great, I would run that back again for sure.

Without the working scoreboard, until I read through the posts there's no way you could convince me that Cornell had over thirty shots on goal.  I said late in the third that I bet neither team had more than fifteen. Most of Cornell's best scoring chances (outside of the breakaways) didn't result in shots on goal.  I was getting worried that that was a bad omen.  Glad I was wrong.

Cornell came out and won a bunch of battles to start the game but then the tide changed and I counted three instances where two Cornell guys were on a puck and the one Dartmouth guy came away with it.  One of them I thought Castagna got away with hauling the Dartmouth guy down and another one ended up with the Dartmouth goal.

Second period was once again Cornell's best period.  They were figuring out that the only way to make plays was to get rid of the puck quickly.  Dartmouth was smothering the puck all night.  When they finally got the puck to the goal line it resulted in some nice set ups.  Can't believe they were that close to two shorties on the same kill.  That was electric.  Would have loved for the roof to come off the place if Walsh had cashed in.

I haven't watched any of the game back but I swear that Major had gained the line on that late icing.

Speaking of icings.  That had to be the most Cornell has been forced into this season.  They really struggled to get the puck out of their zone, then through the neutral zone and then into the zone.  I saw a few too many times where a Cornell player took the first pass and instead of skating the puck they just stood still looking to make that next pass.  Move your feet boys.  Take the open ice.

The lowest percentage play in the Cornell playbook is anything on the backhand.  It's usually soft.  It rarely finds its mark.  They tried it too many times last night and it was never successful.

Kraft was an animal once again.  Great to see him burry those two.  I thought the Dartmouth guy had caught him in OT and that he'd at least take a penalty.  What a finish, top corner, with a guy draped all over him.  That was a beautiful site as he celebrated with the bench emptying in his direction.

The two plays that set up the breakaways were great examples of putting the puck into space.  DiGiulian did that to lead Walsh and Veilleux did it for Kraft after making that nice defensive play.

No, it just means you never got to enjoy the greatest time in Cornell Hockey! ;D

Including watching something that will never happen again!
Ahhh, beans. You got me there! 🥲

Quote from: VIEWfromK on January 24, 2026, 11:20:06 AMI haven't watched any of the game back but I swear that Major had gained the line on that late icing.

In my "VIEWfromC", the players were similarly distraught over that being called an ice. Pretty sure Walsh, Castagna, Major, and two other guys were all arguing with the ref by the bench. Casey called his TO there in part to get some rest on the legs stuck out there.

the puck left Majors stick about 2 ft behind the line. major was about 6 ft behind the line

I loved this about our game last night:

Cornell homed in on Dartmouth's Hayden Stavroff, who entered the night tied for the nation's lead in goals (20) and points per game (1.58), limiting the sophomore forward scoreless for just the sixth time in 20 games this season. He generated just one shot on goal.

https://cornellbigred.com/news/2026/1/23/mens-ice-hockey-dartmouth-recap.aspx

We were on him all night—right from the opening faceoff, when Kraft tied up his stick. Brought back memories of how we shut down eventual 2025 Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard of Michigan in last year's playoffs.

Quote from: VIEWfromK on January 24, 2026, 11:20:06 AMSpeaking of icings.  That had to be the most Cornell has been forced into this season.  They really struggled to get the puck out of their zone, then through the neutral zone and then into the zone.

I think I can safely say this now.

Casey had said at the luncheon that Dartmouth was very good between the blue lines and that he didn't want to play there. All the icings were a result of the game plan to not play to Dartmouth's strength.

Thank you - that makes sense given how dominant we are on face-offs.

There were two times where Kraft was in on the forcheck with one Dartmouth defender and both times he came away with the puck because the defender wanted nothing to do with Kraft.

That could have been a devastating decision.  Major was going for a change and I thought he had enough room to gain the line and dump it in safely.  Even though Cornell won the faceoff, Ashton wasn't able to pin the puck and sure enough those last few seconds got hairy as the puck came into the middle.  Phew

Yeah, it was pretty clear to me in real time that he hadn't gained the line on the broadcast, and I'm a notorious homer on calls like that.

Edit: Ok, 4 others already said this. Wait until you finish reading the thread, dumdum

I could tell there were several purposeful attempts to loft the puck softly over the neutral zone in the 3rd to avoid the icing call, but a couple of those were still too hard or the puck landed on edge and rolled.

Speaking of Major's stick, the all-white tape job looks ghostly cool from ice-level, but damn if it doesn't completely vanish on tv when it's in front of white ice. It looks like he's pretending to hold a stick - I can't even see the blade.

Also, some of the ice looked purple on the video. (Circle in front of E and part of the neutral zone). Lynah lighting weirdsies + digital camera effects?

It's an actual white stick.  Same goes for Fegaras.  Major only tapes the handle and the toe of the blade.  About two inches maybe.  One of the more bizarre tape jobs that I recall seeing.

For a couple of the games during winter break, Major played with a "normal" stick during the first period and then switched to the "ghost stick" for the 2nd and 3rd, but now he's back to using it full-time (maybe a superstition?)

It's not purple irl.

Also, yeah, the Major and Fegaras white sticks are crazy cool, imo. I can see what a pain it would be on the TV though 😅

I forgot about this the other day but being back last night reminded me of it.

On one of the many icings Friday, O'Brien was the one who sent the puck down and went for a change.  He was replaced by Veilleux who jumped on the ice and immediately hunched over and pretended to be out of breath.  The ref or linesman was right there so it didn't work.  I'm sure it happens all the time but in all of my hockey watching I don't recall seeing that trick attempted before.
