Title: An Inconvenient Love: Fegaras And the Penalty Box
Post by: Snowball on January 18, 2026, 04:41:12 PM
From Jane's article today:

... junior defenseman George Fegaras' elbowing penalty at 11:06 of the third period. Serving his 12th minor penalty of the year, Fegaras watched as Tyler Borgula deflected a sharp-angle shot past Cournoyer on the short side, making it a 4-0 game.

Unlike some on this forum, I think George is a terrific player.
But c'mon George, stop treating the penalty box like a second home.

The era of having an "enforcer" is long gone. Greg Hornby was the last I can remember. Just a guided missile at his target most shifts.

And I remember discovering during an intramural game that someone carved "Reserved for Dan Dufresne" into the wood of the home penalty box bench.

These days the players who can throw the hits are also expected to have other skills. In short, stay outta the box!!

George is a great player.

He is also well on his way to establishing permanent residency in the Lynah penalty box. They should start delivering his bills there.

If he could stop taking penalties in 2/3 of his games (on average), it would be just peachy.

I'd be curious to see what his penalties were for, and when...

IIRC, Didn't Hornby take a momentum killing penalty late in thr Frozen Four game against UNH?

I don't know about momentum killing. We never stopped swarming but never broke through. Most painful save of my life. Hadn't had the wind knocked out of me like that by a goalie since Lemon got stuffed on the penalty shot.

"Guided" feels generous. He was a reckless joy to watch.  I  recall hearing he asked to wear 13 when he came in and was told no.

I will note the aptly named Tyler Mugford was a fan of getting physical.

Jared Seminoff placed on this list because his freshman year, he couldn't guard a lamppost without tripping it.

Somehow, he became a very solid shutdown defender for the next three seasons.

Nicholls was a total freight train out there and I remember him as much more of an "enforcer" than Mugford, who was also an excellent penalty killer that frequently got matched up against the other team's scoring lines.

I will say I do have fond memories of my only trip to Thompson, when, not only did we get a rare win there against Dartmouth, but Nicholls scored twice and the large Cornell contingent was loudly chanting his name in the third in the hopes of Schafer giving him some extra shifts for a hat trick bid.

That game also saw multiple game DQs (for fighting) at the final horn, with Bob Gaudet's kid in the middle of it (natch.) I recall a drunk Dartmouth sorority girl told a couple of us to "go throw yourselves in a gorge or whatever" as we were exiting the rink...fun times!

I forgot about Armand's tendency to rack up penalty minutes. He lived in my dorm my first year--very nice, easygoing guy which contrasted with his playstyle

I tried finding a page on PIMs on your site late last night, so thank for presenting.

Matt Cooney was such a force in '96. 34  points and 104 PIM. He was literally everywhere and was the piss & vinegar (with Steve Wilson) that willed that Chartrand-led season to bloom from nothing.

You are right about the swarming at the end.  I was at that game.  Can't believe we didn't score.  With all of the pressure we were putting on, I just meant we lost 2 minutes of heavy offensein due to the penalty.  That save was insane.  Didn't Beeeej, Age, or someone get a picture of it?

That game, man.  After 45 seasons, more than 1000 games, if I could have one game back.

The night before that game Anne and I were simmering half drunk in the hotel hot tub and the UNH leading scorer came down to dip in, he was a very nice guy and we joked with him about an "accident"...

I'm not really sorry I didn't.  But I would be lying if I said I didn't sometimes think, late at night, ...

Nothing in the game thread about a picture. The thread only runs through the night of the game, though.  I stand corrected on the penalty.  Shane Hynes took a high sticking penalty (mentioned in the thread as a dumb penalty like I remember thinking at the time) with 3:08 left after we had closed to 3-2 coming back from 3-0.

There was a lot of weird stuff in that game including, IIRC, a Cornell goal disallowed on a high stick that was the definition of borderline.

That was a big one.  We were all over them for the first 10 minutes or so. I think it was the correct call, but it took forever to review.  It seemed to kill our momentum and give UNH a reset.  I always wondered if the game would have been different if they just waved it off immediately and okay quickly resumed.

This is a more complex calculation than PIM vs. Points but ... maybe ... PIM versus Plus/Minus reveals more. I'm sure Gemini or Perplexity AI could work it up in a flash.

And pretty much guarantee wrong results.

As shady and buried as +/- stats are for the Web 1.0 era, asking an AI product to give you something like this would be hilarious. We'd be lucky to not have NFL stats by the end, given my observations of AI usefulness.

With the time you'd spend fine tuning your prompt, you probably could have done the exercise yourself.

These are kids like you and they make mistakes. Pointing that out is fine, but calling them names???

Sit back and enjoy a team coming together and maybe producing more than anyone, except diehards, would have thought 3 months ago.

Jim, bud, lighten up and take a joke?

You know me; I'm generally one of the more positive people on here. (Well, unless the drop pass on the powerplay comes up.) Trust me, I'm not "calling people names" in the sense that I'm seriously criticizing 99% of their actions. It's a humorous expression, one I have used before on this forum, to express general discontentment with taking penalties, especially a large amount of them or at inopportune times. Understand that I am, at times, simply Saying Words. And, as far as Saying Words go, crimebaggery is a very fun word to say. ("It's not actually a word" it is now, that's how language works!)

Next you're gonna say we can't call the opposing goalie a sieve...

ok but i ENJOY calling players crimebags when they are committing needless crimes. hoyt stanley...
Come on, lighten up and enjoy life.

Sorry, but it was hard for me to realize it was a joke when you use a term that I couldn't even find a meaning for. Then when you mentioned a specific player, well...a joke I couldn't see. I'm sure if I saw you in person I'd understand, but that's also why they make emojis, you can show your human expression better with them.

And yes although I think mentioning sieve was kind of silly, I look at it as hyperbole.

I'd call this a generational thing, since iirc Jim has got to be well past 60 at this point (correct me if I'm wrong Jim).

Not that hard to find a definition that clearly matches stereaxs intent. Google search in Ai mode (bolding is mine for emphasis)

Quote from: Google says"what is the meaning of crimebags in slang"

In general slang, the term crimebags is not a standard dictionary-defined word but is typically used as a playful or derogatory mashup of "crime" and the common pejorative suffix "-bag" (similar to dirtbag, scumbag, or sleazebag).

Depending on the context, it usually means:

A Petty or Incompetent Criminal: It often describes someone who frequently engages in minor or poorly executed illegal activities.

A "Contemptible" Person: Similar to "dirtbag," it can be used to insult someone's character, implying they are untrustworthy or "trashy" because of their lifestyle or behavior.

Comedic Context: In some internet circles (such as TikTok), it has been used as a humorous nickname for pets or people who are "committing crimes" in a non-serious way (e.g., a cat knocking a vase over).

If a word has bag, bags, baggery etc at the end and you've not seen it before, it's likely in that category of derogatory mashup, and not something that serious.

Besides, wasn't it clear that "...calling players crimebags when they are committing needless crimes" was a funny way of referring to taking penalties?

Hell I've  been watching CU hockey for more than 60 years.

And as much as possible I try and stay away from google. Loved it when it started, but they eventually went to the dark side. Found it on duck duck go, but not as well described.
