We'll get a better goalie in this one. Either it will be the third string who looked pretty damn good in his limited time today, or their usual started who wasn't on the bench today for some reason, but is a beast.

Classic trap game. We have league games coming up against Sucks, Dartmouth, Q, and Princeton and we beat these guys 7-1 last night.  Stay focused!

We are usually successful parking in the large lot just west of Wing Road, or on Wing Road if that lot is full.

I know last week we parked at the lot just south of Bartels. But I also don't know if you need to book a spot in advance or what (passenger princess).

I used to park at the crescent lot or garage, but it's probably not much of a walk from the wing lot.

I am almost positive Cornell now charges to park in The Crescent lot. I think the garage may still be free, but is likely tough to get out of after the game.

Here's a screenshot of info Cornell sent before yesterday's game, which seems to support the above.

Skilled video work on the broadcast: Jason said Long was down on the ice behind the play and we were treated to 30 seconds of watching Keopple standing still during the stoppage. No look at Long getting off the ice.

I went back and didn't see anything unusual about the hit, but he did seem to have an awkward stride coming into the zone. I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a hammy or had a weird knee twist or something.

Most of our offensive success lately has been on quick, bang-bang plays. No settling and thinking about it. Knowing what we're going to do with the puck before we get it. Veilleux to Walsh as well as Ashton's goal off the F.O. last night. Tonight, the tic-tac-toe play for Walsh's finishing one-timer. It was actually pretty PP movement.

I still want to see better passing and playmaking between the circles - that needs work. But quicker shots are signs of progress & development.

Up to 9 in the NPI. 6 ECAC in the top 20 which helps with quality of wins and strength of schedule.  We play 4 of the other 5 the next two weeks.

Gutsy win. Say what you want about Keopple but he's stepped up for the most part. We're very lucky their guy was stupid enough to head to the bench after the penalties expired and just left Castagna open for the break. Even with a skeleton band these games are much better.

We went 4-0 in home non conference games that could've sunk our NPI, not we get to benefit by playing four top 20 teams through the next two weeks. This is where we can make huge jumps on the NPI and not even risk blowing the season if all goes wrong.

Beat Quinnipiac. I hate those MFs

I agree. 9th in the NPI is nice but the margins are very thin between us and like 16th so still much to be decided.

I'm not sure how shifts for the extra skaters are determined but we've repeatedly seen the extra skater come in for a sporadic shift and look shaky, often turning it over, ending up out of position, or taking a bad penalty. Not sure if there's a good solution other than waiting until garbage time to get these players shifts but there does seem to be a tradeoff between getting extra skaters ice time and actually winning the game. I don't blame the skaters, it's really hard to enter the game cold, but it's been noticeable. I'm surprised we aren't seeing Wolfenberg or Mosko who got ice time their freshman seasons.

I like Pirtle in the lineup as an extra scoring threat. This is overly facile analysis since obviously the coaches were keeping him out for a reason (defensive liability?), but it's nice to see him in the lineup because it gets us closer to BL's patented 9F/3D scoring threat threshold.

Will students be back for next weekend's games? It was nice to hear the band.

Students should be back by next weekend. Looking forward to it.

Keopple is... fine. He is not the reason we are winning (Cournoyer sometimes was). He is, however, critically, not the reason we are losing. Which is wonderful! I had low expectations. Have been happy.

We'll see how Courns is feeling before next weekend - he was not having a great time skating tonight at the end, but if he suited up for tonight that implies it isn't anything super serious. Hopefully.

Tonight Casty and Walshy led the charge, but overall we're getting a ton of scoring throughout the lineup. Yippee! Team seems to be "clicking" too.

Gorski wasn't bad. Had a few bad plays, but to be expected when you're playing both LD and RD in the same game with a rotating cast of partners. I wasn't terribly upset with his play.

Another thing I've noticed: just me or is Hiscock one of the slower skaters on the roster?

Castagna is inclined to slap his blade on the ice to call for a pass; not something I remember another recent Cornell player doing regularly. You can hear it clearly on the break away play right before the pass.

Kudos to the ECAC for doing a very good job of putting together nice game highlight packages and getting them quickly posted to YouTube. The league has been doing that for a couple seasons now.

There was not much room to move out there Saturday night.  Even on the late four on four Cornell had a hard time even getting out of their zone.  Alaska mostly did a nice job limiting Cornell's movement.  A few times early Alaska got behind the Cornell defense but it really was mostly a tough night for creativity at even strength.

It has been fun watching Castagna continue to mature.  He has shown at times a better understanding of how to control his body (embellishment notwithstanding).  He has always been a player with speed but now more often I see him figuring out how to find the right pace to play at where he can finish plays more regularly.

I don't remember if I have seen him try the between the legs shot before but that was a terrific spot to try it.  Too bad he got under it because that would have been an all timer if he roofed that one.

I missed this but my father in law noticed Castagna tried to shoot for the empty net off the faceoff after the first empty netter but they had a faceoff reset.  I then noticed him before he settled in to take the draw glance back at Fegaras.  As soon as he won the puck back the set play was on and Fegaras sent it off the end boards to the streaking Castagna who had easily beat his guy to negate icing.  It was a thing of beauty.

The lopsided scores (especially Saturday) were a bit deceiving. As noted in the prior post we didn't have a lot of room to make plays; in his post-game interview Casey said these two games were great preparation for getting back into league play, and I think he's spot-on.

On the call, Jason Weinstein initially said that Fegaras missed wide of the empty net. Tony Eisenhut '88, providing color commentary for ESPN, immediately recognized the intentional play between Castagna and Fegaras. For the record, there was no risk of icing or a defensive-zone faceoff for Cornell, since Alaska was on the power play. Yes a smart, beautiful play!

FWIW, I think Jason and especially Tony are quite good, though I miss the enthusiasm of Grady and Tim.

Near sweep of the ECAC awards this week with Castagna, Stanley and Ryan all getting much deserved recognition.

You are right!  I forgot about the Stanley penalty

I am almost positive Cornell now charges to park in The Crescent lot. I think the garage may still be free, but is likely tough to get out of after the game.

Here's a screenshot of info Cornell sent before yesterday's game, which seems to support the above.
For the record the Crescent lot is $12/game.

Steep for Ithaca, but worth it for me. Less lugging the newspaper bag in and I take it back to the car in first intermission. Also quick exit after the game, even though I stay around until after the stick salute.

It looked like you had moved seats late in the game right before they scored so if we are in anymore tight games coming up you know what to do for luck

I'd also like to shake my old man fist at the sky and say the scoreboard is awful- too much space given to jumbotron and adverts, and not enough given to actual scoreboard stuff. The opposite end scoreboards are even worse, with score and time on one side of the rink and penalties on the other.

Behold the GLORY of what is possible (and pre loaded into the system)!!! Seen next day at the kids game. Please make this the default. Jumbotron begone!

edit: the jumbotron is actually less distracting in person than on TV, but the set up is awful.

Agree
The advertising portion seems to have gotten significantly larger this year and leaving less viewing space for the actual game, unless it's my imagination

I mean, you shouldn't be looking at the jumbotron to watch the game. It's in front of you.

But also, the jumbotron is just a fancy advertisement conveyor that sometimes shows shots on net, penalties, and time left accurately.

It should be able to show replays though. Which based on my recent visits to Ithaca it does a terrible job of because (1) whoever is in charge doesn't queue up the replay in time before play resumes and (2) even when they do, the screen is way too small to see anything. Replays of goals is all I ask for and they don't even get that right.

Oh absolutely. Goal replay or even penalty replay (though that one's apparently contentious).

The jumbotron also has about ten pixels total lmfao.

I know I am in the minority but I think replay has done more to hurt sports than anything other than advertising.

It destroys the moment, which used to be a fragile, kinetic experience.  It's now just analytical data.

cf. everything else since roughly 1955.

Eh I mean... if it's something like, only a quarter of the rink COULD see, a penalty replay is useful. Goal replays are always appreciated bc you get different views.

Also, the amount of times I've missed goals bc I'm refreshing eLynah 😭

Isn't the scoreboard just simulcasting the game broadcast?  They only have two replay angles and they usually only show one look of a goal from the angle nearest that goal, right?  I know it's not a venue that lends itself to good tv camera angles but I do wonder if a well off donor would ever contribute to the broadcast so that they could add another center ice camera with a tighter puck follow for an additional replay angle?

I like it for tv broadcasts, especially with good commentating, as it can be a great way to learn some nuances of the sport.

In the rink, though, it's a complete distraction. It changes the flow, it undermines the authority of the refs, and it leads to excessive coaching gamesmanship. It definitely destroys the moment, as it now allows the crowd to look at their phones instead of being synced with the action. That's the "if it's important, it will be digitized" culture we now live in.

That was my whole point-replays shown should be able to actually be seen

Definitely don't watch the game on it but should be able to view replays
