Piggybacking off the Ithaca eateries thread - I've got a... $70 bus trip to Syracuse planned for MLK Day to catch the Crunch game there. (Yeouch, my wallet.)
So here are a few questions -
1) How does public transport in Syracuse work, exactly? There should be a pass vending machine at the mall, right, and I can just cop a day pass there? The online store only has max passes which I assume is for people who are in Syracuse for more than like, 6-8 hours.
2) Has anyone been to a Crunch game and can tell me how the arena is, what food options there are, etc? They refuse to offer an answer on what the concession situation looks like. I know they have a clear bag policy, so I'll take my Cornell one. My ticket is a few rows back from the ice in what looks like a good spot, too.
3) What jersey do I even wear? It's Crunch-Amerks, and I don't have a Bolts or Sabres [gag] jersey. Devils are a nonstarter as they are being a Fucking Embarrassment. Cornell jersey seems a bit much, and I don't think there's a Cornell player on either roster. My CHL Volts jersey (beloved, the one I was wearing last week because its original owner plays for UNO now) also no, especially if I'm travelling to Syracuse, that's far too much and I'd worry too much about losing it or creasing it or whatever. Preds (on Youth Day?), Sharks (would inevitably look like a puck bunny), Flyers away (would rather be caught dead than wearing a Flyers jersey in public), Leafs home or black third (not a Leafs fan, most of these are mystery jerseys) (also I think wearing a Leafs jersey to a Bolts-Sabres affiliate game would get me my ass kicked), Flames (if the Preds and Devils jerseys weren't embarrassing enough...) Kane Hawks (gross), Selanne duck foot Ducks (anachronistic yuck)? I'd have to pack it into the clear bag anyway... and not wearing a jersey is boring...
4) I'm also peeking around and it seems they have a Polish restaurant in Syracuse. This is awesome, except it is closed on Mondays so I won't be able to kill two birds with one stone. Do any of you know any other way to get to Syracuse outside OurBus for public transport? Maybe there's some sorta Cornell shuttle I don't know about? Something I can catch maybe next week, or on a Friday with no hockey in Ithaca?
5) I'll probably have like 2-3 hours in the Destiny Mall after the game. They have a Burger King (a luxury we don't have in Ithaca rn) and an Ikea too. Also a Dave and Buster's. Hell yeah. Any other shops I should be aware of that I might want to burn time at? "You can look this up" I did, but I want the public's knowledge on "hidden gems" and the like.
Historically, the best place to eat in Syracuse is the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. It is the original location, has been a gem for decades. Some how this Southern BBQ honky-tonk blues club biker bar in Upstate NY just works and works well. Local produce, sausages and meats as well as some really interesting characters. There used to be some decent pizza and falafel joints up in the college town area.

Oh! Looks like it's a quick swing on one bus from the rink. And it sounds delightful. I'll see how the timing looks when I get out of the game, but I'm definitely earmarking it for Syracuse trips.

It's excellent, and I've had BBQ all over the country. They day they opened one in Harlem was cause for celebration - the day they opened another one in Park Slope was cause for buying a stationary bike for home.
There are plenty of very good restaurants in Armory Square (including Dinosaur BBQ). It just depends on how much you're willing to spend or how long you're willing to wait for a spot if it's a more popular restaurant (e.g. Dinosaur, Pastabilities). If there's an event at Landmark theater or a major SU event (parents' weekend), then that can present additional challenges
putting Pastabilities on the same list as the brooklyn bakery Baguettaboutit.

If the game is scheduled at 1, I should be out by 3.30. Bus is at 6.30 from the mall. So I could get up to Armory(?) and then to the mall.

And as for the jersey, a brand-new contender came in outta left field - picked up a Blues jersey for $17 at Ross last week. That was the winner. If anything, I'll get some pity for "my team" being the way it is.

After the third fallen beverage directly next to me I am deciding I made the right choice in taking my cheap jersey 😂
Did y'all know they opened an Ikea at the Syracuse mall?
And they have a Burger King. Man I haven't had Burger King in ages.
Headed straight for the mall after the game. (Dinosaur BBQ place, I will visit another time!) Got about an hour to burn now before going home.
I need friends with cars that are down for my harebrained schemes to get more hockey in... could absolutely make a day out of a mall trip and a 7 pm puck drop game...
(Speaking of, the Crunch won in the shootout! Devon Levi still sucks at hockey!)
so guess who missed the bus that was RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER FUCKING NOSE
Okay, your liveblogging update: I'm getting on a Greyhound from Syracuse to Binghamton and then an Ourbus from Bingo to Ithaca.
Question for the group: do I pay $21 and get the 10 PM bus from Bingo to get to Ithaca by 11.10, or do I save $11, pay $10, and take the midnight bus from Bingo and get to Ithaca at 1.10 AM?
I have class at 9 AM tomorrow.
welcome to wonderful Binghamton, New York, where the bus terminal has people just lyin on the floor.
I took the 10 pm bus and thank god I did I do NOT want to be here a minute longer than I have to
Made a new friend (traumabonding in the Binghamton bus terminal with a bus delayed 50 minutes) <3
En route to Ithaca now!
I need friends with cars LOL.

Hah, I was planning to wash my hair once I got back (at a reasonable hour, as I originally intended), but I passed out the minute I got home. Need to take a nice, LONG shower tonight, though, after the women's game. Maybe with some bleach.

Might be a good way to get people to head out to Syracuse... spend the day at the ginormous mall and Ikea and all, and then catch the Crunch later in the evening... Sorry. I'm getting way too far ahead of myself.
Can you tell I like hockey? 😅

Does it have the restaurant with the vegetarian Swedish meatballs? Those were the highlight of our last IKEA visit (on Long Island during the T20 Cricket World Cup in 2024).

There is a small restaurant, yes, and they do serve meatballs for sure. However, I was a little unwell from my Burger King binge already and didn't check their menu in detail. Their website says they serve plantballs, (https://www.ikea.com/us/en/stores/syracuse/) though! Worth a swing by.
There's also an escape room place (https://www.destinyusa.com/tenants/mystery-room/) and I don't think I've wanted something more in my life.
Besides my hockey teams to win, of course 😅
(And Googling "where do I find law student friends who have cars who are down to do fun shit with me" was unfortunately unsuccessful LMAO. I think the moral of the story is stop thinking MTH owes me anything.)
This also reminds me I need to plan a Syracuse trip to go to that Polish restaurant. I'll think about that later.

One of many, many reasons I went to law school in New York City but kept my car up at my parents' house in the 'burbs. Fun shit never
required a car, but I could still road-trip for hockey weekends. Cornell was by far Cardozo's biggest feeder, so I never lacked for volunteers. ;D

Smart.
There's still a lot of fun shit to do in and around Ithaca, and if I ever want to spend the day doing stuff
in Ithaca the bus gets me just about everywhere. The issue is the stuff that's
not in Ithaca... now that's a pain in the ass to figure out.
Case in point, when I swung out to Village Taqueria (to get sorely disappointed) it was an all-day trip where I had to spend like 4 hours in Dryden after my meal.
And there isn't even a TCAT or anything like that that makes it to Syracuse, so you're relying on OurBus, and if you're doing a hockey game, then getting home is a massive pain if it isn't a matinee. Just going shopping at the mall is easier to fit, but it's also a $70 roundtrip ticket so not really worth it only to go shopping.
Hmmmmm. I
might be able to make the March 1 game on public transportation...
...yeah I'm probably doing that, LMAO. But I'll probably book it out in February when I have more of an idea of my schedule.
Having another bad idea... pros and cons of swinging out to catch the Crunch at 5 pm tomorrow?
Pros:
I like hockey
Can also go to the mall afterwards for a bit (fun)
Charlotte Checkers are the AHL team of the Panthers which means I'll see prospects I know of
Cons:
If I ran the math correctly this trip is $100 give or take
Bus gets me home at midnight; gold medal game is at 8 am the next day
Probably makes it tough to watch Cornell at Princeton tomorrow
I can do this same trip in a week on Sunday to watch the Amerks, so long as the Cornell women don't go into a third game in the playoffs
I dunno. I'm thinking logically this is a no, right? But when have I ever been known for being logical...
