2-0 in 2026; don't change the luck.
Main player to watch out for is goalie Lassi Lehti, he is an absolute baller, putting up a .916 save percentage with a pretty bad team around him, and it's not a fluke, he had even better numbers the last two years. Luckily for us, Alaska turned to their 5'11 freshman backup on Saturday, and he held Providence to just one goal, so hopefully they ride the hot hand and we see him Friday.
They have a bad powerplay, mediocre PK, and no remarkable scorers. I think we can expect the usual Alaska goonery which could be problematic with some of our guys seeming to lose their cool easily.
They are a pretty bad team but have picked up wins over quinnipiac, Michigan tech, and providence this year, so they can have a good game from time to time.

Seems he played behind goalies with worse numbers the past two years, so he has a small sample size of games, but yeah that's pretty good. And good for him not transferring to a better program that's within 1,000 miles of other schools and isn't minus 30 degrees the whole winter.

Looking at their results this weekend should be about as challenging as UNO. Alaska's win and tie with Q and last weekend's win over Providence certainly caught my attention.
Underestimate them to our peril. As long as we play up to our top level, and not do the thing where we play down to an opponent, there should be a good result, and some good hockey.
Will there be a band next weekend?

I'd doubt it - still "offseason" tickets.
It should be interesting to see how the ice holds up this weekend. The women play both days at 3 PM.

I need to check if my women's season tickets cover those games... well, not like I was doing anything that weekend LOL.
The ice looked way better this weekend as compared to December, but we'll see how it looks after a four game slate over 2 days.
Hate to pile on the ice concerns, but rainy and milder weather incoming to Ithaca. 40s, not 50s like back in November, but worth noting with 4 games on the sheet.

You're speaking my language... not freezing my ass off getting home from games, or being "stuck" at Lynah for half an hour waiting for a bus because it's not freezing in there...
But yeah, if true, ice quality becomes even more of a concern.

If the rink can't handle four games with weather in the 40s, then we need a new facility, or at the very least, better scheduling.
I've spent a week playing in Cheel in July, and the ice was perfectly fine. Hopefully, ice conditions in November were mostly due to a failed experiment.

I like Simple Minds but they're definitely the least well-known and popular of the four options. Michael Jackson or Prince would've been a better replacement, and I'm sure anyone here who lived through the 80's could talk about how huge those two were.

Looked like Cournoyer pulled something in his leg at the end there, wouldn't be surprised to see Keopple again tomorrow even if he isn't hurt.
Great win with a lot of action from the freshmen, hopefully DiGiulian can break out of his slump soon because he had a puck that was sitting in the crease waiting to be put home that he whiffed on twice.
This and Potsdam mark our fastest repeat of 7+ goals (14 days) since November 2000 (http://www.tbrw.info/index.html?/games/cornell_7_Goal_Games.html).
Weird game. We were often sloppy in our zone, and a more skilled opponent would likely have made us pay. While we had 3 PP goals, that was largely due to the 5 x 3 opportunities and our 5 x 4 wasn't great. I'm sure Casey was annoyed by all the odd-man rushes we gave up after scoring the 1st 5 x 3 goal and we still were a man up. The kill down 2 men was huge, and Cornouyer came up big with a flurry around the net. All that being said we looked pretty good offensively, and nice to see snipes find the net. The freshman class continues to shine, and it was particularly nice to see Pirtle make an impact, especially on what turned out to be the GWG. He may have struggled a bit the 1st half of the season, but it looks like he is starting to come around.
By no means a perfect performance, but if we can get another W tomorrow we'll have everything in front of us during the final stretch of league games.

He was also looking at his ankle after returning to the net. It was an awkward play where he went down funny. Since it was a blowout I wasn't fully focused on what was going on at that point but I thought a puck went through the crease and he fell backward. I initially thought he banged his back on the post or got hit in the back with the puck the way he was hunched over but then when I saw him checking out his ankle maybe it buckled under him? He had a goal and an assist last Friday
That was a weird game. By the end it felt like an exhibition game against a Canadian University. From what I was reading about Alaska I was glad that they weren't the first opponent coming out of the long layoff. They were pretty even for most of the first two periods but it really looked like Alaska ran out of gas. Man the freshman on this team are a collection of studs! So many of them have stepped up to carry the team for a game or a weekend. It's impressive to see these young guys go to the net to find loose pucks. DiGiulian did it to start the season and tonight both Long and Pirtle got their goals from right around the crease. No shying away from the tough areas. I appreciated that Ryan almost looked embarrassed that his second goal went in. He didn't celebrate at all. I'm not going to look it up in case it isn't as high as I think but what percentage of their goals are from freshman and how does it compare to other seasons? It feels like it would be hard to find a lot of other instances where the freshman are as productive as this group.

Goals from six different players, including the 'extra man'. How about that? s/
I don't love some of those odd man rushes or 5 penalties, but good on CU for killing a 5x3 and converting on a 5x3. TCB.
I can't believe I am saying this but I think they are doing a nice job making these games themed games. You can't blare 80s music, right, so that was very pleasant in and around the band. Plus tonight being youth hockey night should give the place more purpose than an otherwise empty building. This is exactly when to put this kind of thing to good use. Once the students are back it's unnecessary.

One option is a rickroll. It's going to win, obviously.
Obviously a trick to normalize the DJ's presence.
In an 80s movie, the heroes would concoct a plan to disable and destroy the Lynah DJ equipment. (DJ played by Ted McGinley)
Quote from: sah67 on January 09, 2026, 09:06:01 PMThat was a pretty boneheaded challenge in a 5-1 game with your timeout already used up.
From the middle of M (further away than the Alaska bench) I told my daughter immediately it looked like it went in off the skate, but wasn't kicked.
They then showed the replay on the scoreboard (something Schafer had said in the past that he didn't want them to do, for this reason) and it was very clear the puck was not kicked.
I am confident that if the Alaska head coach had actually seen the replay on the scoreboard he would not have challenged, and we would have had one less Alaska penalty to work with.
Casey needs to get the powers that be to stop showing replays of Cornell goals.

I was wondering if the Alaska budget doesn't allow for a travel video coach? I would have thought someone in the press box watching replays would have called that one off for a challenge.

I mean, if you're down 5-1, I would expect you to only use a challenge on something you were absolutely sure happened...
Just got back from a trip and watched the replay of the game-the refs need to tighten things up for tonight.
I like the interview between intermissions-I hadn't heard of them until this one of Kraft. Now I want to go back and watch more of them if they had them.
The only disadvantage of being at the game in person

I mean, I heard the Appleton expansion was nice, but I doubt they expanded THAT much.
I appreciate Casey's candor in interviews. His answers go into greater strategic depth than typical coach-speak. I found interesting his quote in the Sun's write-up of tonight's game that he didn't think the team played very well yesterday despite the 7-1 win, referencing that Cornell's xGA (expected goals against) was the highest of any game this season. Interestingly CHN's xGA stat says Cornell's xGA was a full goal higher in the Harvard game earlier this season (3.8 vs. last night's 2.8). Clearly, the coaching staff is sourcing its xGA differently. (chimpfood previously mentioned that CHN's stat only looks at where on the ice the shot came from, not the type of shot it was.) Anyway, I'm glad the staff is incorporating analytics and that Casey takes them seriously. With four full-time coaches and a Director of Hockey Ops, we have the man-power to gather and utilize this information.
