So I had to do an emergency server upgrade on Friday night to, you know, an OS that wasn't, you know, 11 years old. Moving to a new version of PHP put the last nail in the coffin of Phorum, which hasn't been updated since Cornell played on Beebe Lake.
So it was time. SMF seems like a good, robust, free, and actively developed solution which included a migration script from Phorum... that really, really didn't work without a lot of massaging, but I got there. Everyone's accounts should be converted, along with your existing password. Posts and messages should all be here. Avatars, apparently did not make the trip.
This theme is a placeholder. There are likely a lot of broken things, but as I'm still putting out other fires with the server swap, I'll look into them when everything has settled. No need to tell me about what you find. Yet.
Sorry for the inconvenience. It certainly wasn't planned, but it's definitely the best thing to happen for this forum's future. I can implement some proper spam checks and stuff, for starters.
wait until people realize it matches the new team colors we are rolling out.
Go Big Silver/grey
Holy shit, it's gorgeous Age! I love it!
Thanks for the swift transition. Seems easy enough to get around this new place. Your work to keep and maintain this site is appreciated.
So far it seems pretty good, though in comparison with the old version it's seven feet further away and has less cheese.

There are three little color circles at the bottom of the page. You can click the red one if you prefer. I couldn't select that by default. Temporary, at any rate.
This is honestly perfect. Just leave it like this. Don't put any of your time into aesthetics, this is so clean and easy to read I think any change would probably be towards enshittification.
Thank you again, this is a gift!
(Note: speaking from the perspective of a desktop user; I haven't tried it on iPacifier yet.)
Also I think I speak for... well, just me but maybe others would agree. If the back catalog of 260k posts is holding down efficiency or costing $$$, I for one, as the author of 8% of them, and probably 40% of the total bitcount of the content of this site, would be fine if you just flushed everything and started us over fresh and clean. Or everything before say 10/1/24 if that freaks people out.
Oh shit not IMs tho, please keep them.
Just an FYI, my username includes an apostrophe, which is apparently an illegal character. Fortunately, I just deleted the apostrophe and it let me log in.

Apostrophes are delimited with a control character (/') in old posts.
Thanks, should be corrected
Great work! I've created a message board before, and I know how much effort you must have put into (are putting into) making this work for us to enjoy. Much appreciated!!!

29-ish years since I first put together the CHDF, and roughly four houses later...
I appreciate whatever requires the least bespoke maintenance. Thanks for your service, Age.
Back to lurking.
I had a slight depressive episode when faced with yesterday's outage- Thank you, Age, for getting the new board up so fast and with all the features intact (plus more!)

Kind of a quirk of SMF, you can only attach files when doing a full reply (Reply button at the bottom), not a quick reply. I just added a mod that adds an "Add Files" button to the quick reply that effectively takes you to a full reply.

Is there a way to click on a topic that jumps directly to the
first new post since the last time I read the topic rather than just being able to click on the
most recent new post? That was a lovely feature of the old eLF that I'm hoping exists here and I just can't find it for some reason.

I believe if you click the "NEW" next to the subject it takes you to the first new one?
Whoa... upgrade!!! I personally hate it, but I hate anything new so please don't take my opinion into any actual account <3. It objectively looks nice and I'm looking forward to poking around and learning more about it, I'm just sad because I really liked the old-timey feel of the old forum. Seconding whoever said it before but red should absolutely be set as the default color.
I think this was the radio PFP I was using. I'm usually on mobile, lol.
A lot of the old quoting is broken, sadly - one of my favorite old threads (https://elf.elynah.com/index.php?topic=138552.0), for context. So are a bunch of the funnier emojis :(
Also, uh... there a way to hide email on the profile?
Also also - what's the "hero member", "senior member", etc about?
Also also also - the current "upper limit" on profile age is 2004-03-22 (which, to make y'all feel old, predates me by a couple weeks), but posts on the forum go back at minimum to 2002...
Also also also also - the "like" function is wonderful. I enjoy that thoroughly :)
ALSO ALSO ALSO ALSO ALSO WE FINALLY GOT A DELETE MESSAGE FUNCTION. Helllllllllll yeah.

Looks right. Thanks!
I like the new L&F, although I switched to the reddish color.
Any idea why if:
- I'm reading the third-level listing (subjects like "Hockey")
- and choose an individual topic (like "Alumni in the Pros") by clicking the "NEW" button,
- then read what's new,
- and finally choose "Hockey" again to go up one level in the hierarchy,
"NEW" persists next to "Alumni in the Pros"?
Yet another thought - could we put the old ELynah logo at the top, where it says ELynah Forum?
One feature that would be helpful is for the topic to show by whom and when the last post was made, rather than merely who started the thread.

My recollection from before I retired, now almost 15 years ago, is that SUS are explosive underwater sound sources. They are used for studying the sea floor among other things. As I theoretic researcher, I never used them, which is good because I probably would have blown myself up even though they are small.

No, it's the other one. You'll probably figure it out eventually.
I'm lost, but then my son informs me that kids don't say "sus" any more.
As a "kid" I can assure you we do.
you are in law school. my kid would say you have unc* status

LMAOOOOO I get it but also. Fuck I'm old now.
As I sit here waiting for RPI to be devoured by BU at 5 PM in a game that doesn't count, I have been trying to figure out just what "SUS member" means. There are only 13 SUS members, and they range from Trotsky who has the most posts of anyone to kla52 who has only 6 posts and hasn't been active since 2017. Clearly it is something that requires an Ivy-League education to understand.

So you and 12 others including some who haven't been here for a decade or so are updating the software. That sounds like something which DJT would say. :D

"That's the joke."
I'd love to say we were early adopters, but I find it believable that my configuration is so god awful and obsolete that Age had to specifically note its inability to play well with real stacks.
It's not that we are updating the software. It's that we are so hopeless he has to make allowances.

thanks for figuring that out

Welcome to the club.
I love that we have a site to discuss hockey. But I really avoid the site now with this new layout.
Is there something that can be done about the recent influx of spam posts? Seems the moderators are manually deleting these posts but the issue persists. Maybe new members would be subject to some kind of approval process or be required to answer a couple of simple college hockey-related questions?
@CowbellGuy Age, let me know if you need any help. I get the feeling that you're technically inclined and I imagine that you're all set... But if not, I'm a software engineer and maybe I can lend a hand with the migration if you need it.
And I second/third/fourth the sentiments of appreciation for you maintaining the site; a donate button would be good.

Moderators can delete posts, but only administrators (which may just be Age) can ban/block users. I assume there are administrative solutions, but I don't know what they are or if Age has time to implement them.

Came here to say this. I've asked for the proper permissions to ban/block but otherwise I'm just deleting individual posts, and I haven't kept up with it very quickly because it's frustrating to have to keep doing it on the same posters again and again.
ETA: Ticket Exchange also used to be a moderated section back on the old forum; since the migration, it no longer is. There should be no spam in there at all, but right now it's no different than the other sections, and I'm not sure Age has the ability to make that change for only one section as opposed to the whole forum.

Ticket exchange gets one real post every three years. I'd delete it entirely tbh.

I assure you that's not the case. You may only think so because we delete posts as soon as the games to which they were relevant have passed.
Hey, technical question here.
The new software shows me that there are new posts on a topic. But, unlike the old software, when I click on the link for the thread, it takes me to the start of the topic, rather than the location as to where the new post is at. I am logged in. Is there something in the settings that would enable me to land directly at the new post? I've looked in the settings, but can't seem to find it. I have this problem both on my PC (Brave browser) and my Android phone (again, Brave browser). Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Badda boom badda bing! Thanks!
Something really needs to be done about the spam.

Worth mentioning, though, that we do (however sporadically) delete the spam, while your complaints about it remain.

It seems to me that spam is addressed quite quickly. I'm not logged in continuously, but based on the complaints I must miss a lot. One thing that I haven't yet found on this new platform is a quick button for reporting spam. Is there a way for users to flag junk with a single click?
SpaM

I don't want a banhammer voting system, that is a Mod job and certain things (like abridgements of speech, and summary execution) are judicial, not legislative.
I want U2U customization so I can block... oh... I dunno... Whelan can be a pill... ;)

I'm not blaming the moderators who are manually deleting the spam. The site needs to allow moderators to ban accounts or better yet require new accounts to pass some sort of test to ensure they are legitimate.

Thanks! Absurd as it is, I've been less active lately because this has been bugging me.
