So I had to do an emergency server upgrade on Friday night to, you know, an OS that wasn't, you know, 11 years old. Moving to a new version of PHP put the last nail in the coffin of Phorum, which hasn't been updated since Cornell played on Beebe Lake.
So it was time. SMF seems like a good, robust, free, and actively developed solution which included a migration script from Phorum... that really, really didn't work without a lot of massaging, but I got there. Everyone's accounts should be converted, along with your existing password. Posts and messages should all be here. Avatars, apparently did not make the trip.
This theme is a placeholder. There are likely a lot of broken things, but as I'm still putting out other fires with the server swap, I'll look into them when everything has settled. No need to tell me about what you find. Yet.
Sorry for the inconvenience. It certainly wasn't planned, but it's definitely the best thing to happen for this forum's future. I can implement some proper spam checks and stuff, for starters.
wait until people realize it matches the new team colors we are rolling out.
Go Big Silver/grey
Holy shit, it's gorgeous Age! I love it!
Thanks for the swift transition. Seems easy enough to get around this new place. Your work to keep and maintain this site is appreciated.
So far it seems pretty good, though in comparison with the old version it's seven feet further away and has less cheese.

There are three little color circles at the bottom of the page. You can click the red one if you prefer. I couldn't select that by default. Temporary, at any rate.
This is honestly perfect. Just leave it like this. Don't put any of your time into aesthetics, this is so clean and easy to read I think any change would probably be towards enshittification.
Thank you again, this is a gift!
(Note: speaking from the perspective of a desktop user; I haven't tried it on iPacifier yet.)
Also I think I speak for... well, just me but maybe others would agree. If the back catalog of 260k posts is holding down efficiency or costing $$$, I for one, as the author of 8% of them, and probably 40% of the total bitcount of the content of this site, would be fine if you just flushed everything and started us over fresh and clean. Or everything before say 10/1/24 if that freaks people out.
Oh shit not IMs tho, please keep them.
Just an FYI, my username includes an apostrophe, which is apparently an illegal character. Fortunately, I just deleted the apostrophe and it let me log in.

Apostrophes are delimited with a control character (/') in old posts.
Thanks, should be corrected
Great work! I've created a message board before, and I know how much effort you must have put into (are putting into) making this work for us to enjoy. Much appreciated!!!

29-ish years since I first put together the CHDF, and roughly four houses later...
I appreciate whatever requires the least bespoke maintenance. Thanks for your service, Age.
Back to lurking.
I had a slight depressive episode when faced with yesterday's outage- Thank you, Age, for getting the new board up so fast and with all the features intact (plus more!)

Kind of a quirk of SMF, you can only attach files when doing a full reply (Reply button at the bottom), not a quick reply. I just added a mod that adds an "Add Files" button to the quick reply that effectively takes you to a full reply.

Is there a way to click on a topic that jumps directly to the
first new post since the last time I read the topic rather than just being able to click on the
most recent new post? That was a lovely feature of the old eLF that I'm hoping exists here and I just can't find it for some reason.

I believe if you click the "NEW" next to the subject it takes you to the first new one?
Whoa... upgrade!!! I personally hate it, but I hate anything new so please don't take my opinion into any actual account <3. It objectively looks nice and I'm looking forward to poking around and learning more about it, I'm just sad because I really liked the old-timey feel of the old forum. Seconding whoever said it before but red should absolutely be set as the default color.
I think this was the radio PFP I was using. I'm usually on mobile, lol.
A lot of the old quoting is broken, sadly - one of my favorite old threads (https://elf.elynah.com/index.php?topic=138552.0), for context. So are a bunch of the funnier emojis :(
Also, uh... there a way to hide email on the profile?
Also also - what's the "hero member", "senior member", etc about?
Also also also - the current "upper limit" on profile age is 2004-03-22 (which, to make y'all feel old, predates me by a couple weeks), but posts on the forum go back at minimum to 2002...
Also also also also - the "like" function is wonderful. I enjoy that thoroughly :)
ALSO ALSO ALSO ALSO ALSO WE FINALLY GOT A DELETE MESSAGE FUNCTION. Helllllllllll yeah.

Looks right. Thanks!
I like the new L&F, although I switched to the reddish color.
Any idea why if:
- I'm reading the third-level listing (subjects like "Hockey")
- and choose an individual topic (like "Alumni in the Pros") by clicking the "NEW" button,
- then read what's new,
- and finally choose "Hockey" again to go up one level in the hierarchy,
"NEW" persists next to "Alumni in the Pros"?
Yet another thought - could we put the old ELynah logo at the top, where it says ELynah Forum?
One feature that would be helpful is for the topic to show by whom and when the last post was made, rather than merely who started the thread.

My recollection from before I retired, now almost 15 years ago, is that SUS are explosive underwater sound sources. They are used for studying the sea floor among other things. As I theoretic researcher, I never used them, which is good because I probably would have blown myself up even though they are small.

LMAOOOOO I get it but also. Fuck I'm old now.
As I sit here waiting for RPI to be devoured by BU at 5 PM in a game that doesn't count, I have been trying to figure out just what "SUS member" means. There are only 13 SUS members, and they range from Trotsky who has the most posts of anyone to kla52 who has only 6 posts and hasn't been active since 2017. Clearly it is something that requires an Ivy-League education to understand.

"That's the joke."
I'd love to say we were early adopters, but I find it believable that my configuration is so god awful and obsolete that Age had to specifically note its inability to play well with real stacks.
It's not that we are updating the software. It's that we are so hopeless he has to make allowances.

Welcome to the club.
I love that we have a site to discuss hockey. But I really avoid the site now with this new layout.
Is there something that can be done about the recent influx of spam posts? Seems the moderators are manually deleting these posts but the issue persists. Maybe new members would be subject to some kind of approval process or be required to answer a couple of simple college hockey-related questions?
@CowbellGuy Age, let me know if you need any help. I get the feeling that you're technically inclined and I imagine that you're all set... But if not, I'm a software engineer and maybe I can lend a hand with the migration if you need it.
And I second/third/fourth the sentiments of appreciation for you maintaining the site; a donate button would be good.

Moderators can delete posts, but only administrators (which may just be Age) can ban/block users. I assume there are administrative solutions, but I don't know what they are or if Age has time to implement them.

Came here to say this. I've asked for the proper permissions to ban/block but otherwise I'm just deleting individual posts, and I haven't kept up with it very quickly because it's frustrating to have to keep doing it on the same posters again and again.
ETA: Ticket Exchange also used to be a moderated section back on the old forum; since the migration, it no longer is. There should be no spam in there at all, but right now it's no different than the other sections, and I'm not sure Age has the ability to make that change for only one section as opposed to the whole forum.

Ticket exchange gets one real post every three years. I'd delete it entirely tbh.

I assure you that's not the case. You may only think so because we delete posts as soon as the games to which they were relevant have passed.
Hey, technical question here.
The new software shows me that there are new posts on a topic. But, unlike the old software, when I click on the link for the thread, it takes me to the start of the topic, rather than the location as to where the new post is at. I am logged in. Is there something in the settings that would enable me to land directly at the new post? I've looked in the settings, but can't seem to find it. I have this problem both on my PC (Brave browser) and my Android phone (again, Brave browser). Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that spam is addressed quite quickly. I'm not logged in continuously, but based on the complaints I must miss a lot. One thing that I haven't yet found on this new platform is a quick button for reporting spam. Is there a way for users to flag junk with a single click?

I don't want a banhammer voting system, that is a Mod job and certain things (like abridgements of speech, and summary execution) are judicial, not legislative.
I want U2U customization so I can block... oh... I dunno... Whelan can be a pill... ;)

I'm not blaming the moderators who are manually deleting the spam. The site needs to allow moderators to ban accounts or better yet require new accounts to pass some sort of test to ensure they are legitimate.

The one thing I noticed about these is that nobody has joined the forum in a month; i.e., these are old accounts that are only now "figuring out" how to post here.
The Ruslanefa guy, for example, started his account in November 2020. Bogdantoj, April 2021.

The old forum would not let you post in Cyrillic. My guess is these accounts were created back then. The bot gave up after X number of failed attempts, and just went dormant. Now someone has found them again.

I am just curious why moderators don't have the power to ban accounts given that this is an ongoing issue. That should fix it instantly. I don't think it's a great look for the forum to have loads of spam being posted constantly, that's all.

Because as of yet, the site admin hasn't made that change. If and when he does, it'll get better. I thought we'd said that elsewhere, more than once.

It would be nice to get some sort of periodic update re: fixing the issues on this forum. The two biggest ones being constant spam and the fact new members can't register. The former has been attributed to Age's focus being elsewhere for now, and the latter has never been acknowledged. Not allowing new members seems like the bigger long term issue as it will eventually kill off this forum altogether and in the short term will narrow the range of viewpoints on here and prevent people from exercising their Cornell hockey fandom.

Seems if one attempts to sign up for a new account, the Captcha will not accept any answer, i.e. it's impossible to verify one's account and therefore impossible to sign up.

Any word from the mods on whether a fix might be in the works? I think it's been broken for five months now, so zero new members in that time.
There were one or two people who managed to get in, but it's been overwhelmingly broken, sadly.

Hopefully not because of complications.
No need to respond, but I know it's tough when you get yourself mentally ready and then, poof, you need to start all over getting ready.

Thanks. Basically because it's winter and I have a toddler in daycare. I came back from vacation with the cold Isaac had when we left for vacation, and for some reason, anesthesiologists don't like it when their surgical patients can't breathe. Go figure.

If the forum signups don't get fixed in the nearish future we should consider disbanding ELynah and moving to a different forum. Lots of new people want to discuss Cornell hockey and it's a shame to just hear the same few voices again and again.

I've definitely told this one before but idk if you were around for it - but before one of the later-season games this year, Jim was making the rounds with the papers (as he always does) and (keep in mind, I'm section C, so the average age range around me is like 19-23) there's a girl like 2 seats away from me who goes "oh, he's cute!"
Me, looking at the little pre-game video that's currently airing on the video board: Castagna?

What the announcer doesn't tell you is that Lodboa had a natural hat trick (All three goals in a row. No one else scores in between.) in the third period. In the video his first goal was a PP to go from a 3-3 tie to us up 4-3. The second, where the announcer says he seems to like open ice, was a 2 MAN DOWN PK for the game winner 5-3 (Clarkson scored their fourth later). And the final nail was even strength, for a 6-3. The final Clarkson goal with 6:31 remaining made the final score 6-4.

Here's NY Times report that says shorthanded, but misses that it was 2 men down.
NY Times (https://www.nytimes.com/1970/03/22/archives/cornell-six-tops-clarkson-in-final-wins-64-as-lodboa-nets-3-goals.html)
Here's Fandom Ice Hockey which has the best description, stating 2 men down.
Fandom (https://icehockey.fandom.com/wiki/1969%E2%80%9370_Cornell_Big_Red_men%27s_ice_hockey_season)
And here's Fandom's quote:
QuoteA minute later Cornell's Westner was sent to the box and followed soon after by Gordon Lowe to give Clarkson a 5-on-3 man advantage. Rather than see Clarkson capitalize on their opportunity, the crowd got to witness Lodboa skate from end to end through the entire Clarkson team and score one of the most spectacular goals in NCAA history. The goal, which would ultimately prove to be the game-winner, was Lodboa's fourth shorthanded tally of the year, a new NCAA record, and the only 3-on-5 goal in any Championship Game.[28] Just over five minutes later, with a player from each side in the box, Lodboa got his third goal of the night to complete a hat-trick, the first natural hat-trick in Championship Game history and the only ever hat-trick by a defenseman.
And of course the box score shows the 2 penalties that we took.
And for those that may be new, or forgot, the shorthanded goal is pictured in the series of photos on Bartel's walls.
One hell-of-a-game!

I think removing the compulsion to check social media/internet fora is a positive. Though, taking that to its logical extreme means we should delete this website entirely. And then we'll just end up chatting about Cornell sports at an even worse place, like Twitter. If ELynah is worth saving, then it's not acceptable for the first two pages of the forum to be Russian spamposts. Age does own the website, but (1) does he have to, or can he transfer ownership to someone else? and (2) if he does want or need to own ELynah, can he give the other mods the power to ban accounts? I don't think people are demanding Age check this website every day, but there are presumably easy solutions outside of that.
this site is pretty unusable at the moment, i think somebody needs to contact Age and figure out an ELynah succession plan
Go start your own website if you are so unhappy.

Right. Splitting ELynah into two and trying to convince a bunch of people to leave the original forum for the new one is definitely what I should be doing, as someone with no expertise in managing an Internet forum. That sounds like a much better plan than *checks notes* a simple discussion with the owner about fixing the current situation.
One way to reduce spam is to just block all overseas ip addresses.

I was a mod for the Ivy League Sports Board on Voy. Once you start blocking these overseas IP addresses, they typically give up spamming the site and move on to easier targets.

Hi Age. IMO this is not the correct solution. Is there really no way to let people register for this site without weeding out spambots? I would rather have (1) new people able to join and (2) spambots than to have neither. I think a better solution would be to allow people to join, but also for mods to be able to ban accounts. Or for some sort of verification system so that the spambots have a harder time registering in the first place. The forum is eventually going to die off if new people can't register.

If it's N/A ignore it. For whatever reason, the fact that mods don't have this power has never registered on my psyche, oddly enough.
Also,
gotta doesn't mean gotta or you fail, it means gotta or I'll have a sad.
Also also, we all understand the mods are unpaid and do it for the love of the game and we don't fault you for anything so LIGHTEN UP FRANCIS!

Why is it so hard to let people make accounts while also limiting/policing the spam? Given every other forum I've ever used manages to do that? More clarity would be nice...

If you have the spare time to create, host, maintain, mod, etc a hockey website, have at it.

I already explained why this response is completely nonsensical lol
"Oh, you think the president is doing a bad job? Then why don't you be president?"
To be clear, if Age has more important things to do than run this forum, then I actually think that's great. He should absolutely do that. I'd just like to see things delegated so that the forum can be maintained or at least get an explanation of why that isn't happening.
Classic cake-eater behavior. Show up late, contribute nothing, complain about everything, and act shocked that volunteers aren't meeting your standards.
Quote from: The Rancor on June 09, 2026, 11:29:03 PMClassic cake-eater behavior. Show up late, contribute nothing, complain about everything, and act shocked that volunteers aren't meeting your standards.
You sound extremely confused about how Internet forums are run and also about the concept of Internet forums in general. Have you ever used an Internet forum before, other than this one? Do you think the average user contributes to maintaining an Internet forum? Do you think forum members should just chill when there are 100 Russian spamposts per day? Do you have any interest in actually growing the forum by adding new members, or do you just want the same tiny, dwindling group of posters to be posting the same crap until the whole website dies off? Do you know of any other active forums that are overrun with this much spam?
If the "volunteers" weren't "meeting my standards" (which isn't true), then I would happily volunteer to become a moderator. But that wouldn't solve the problem! Because the moderators are apparently unequipped to fix the problem! That's the whole point! The entire forum doesn't function because the mods, who
are trying to maintain this website, don't have the power to do so! Therefore, it would be great to have some transparency regarding what steps are being taken to stop this forum from dying off.
You aren't a member. We are guests.
The funny thing is nobody disagrees with your diagnosis. The forum has a spam problem. We disagree with your entitlement. Every post reads like you're filing a complaint with management when management is basically one retired hockey fan.

Yawn. It's been like eight months and nothing has been fixed. I've been very clear I don't blame Age, or the mods, or anybody in particular. But the forum does not function at the moment (people cannot even sign up) and nothing is being done about it nor is anyone with insight into the issue putting forth a plan to fix it.
What's your solution?

This makes sense to me. I don't think there are a great number of new Cornell hockey fans wishing to discuss hockey stuff over the summer months. The risk of turning away new fans right now is pretty low, compared to the obvious benefit of stemming the tide of new foreign spambot accounts posting in the forum.
That said, I remain hopeful that we'll have a better solution in place before the start of the new season in the fall.

Ever since The Rancor said this forum needs to improve its signal-to-noise ratio I've been trying to post more. But the NCAA's new five-year eligibility rule is having a counteracting effect and makes engaging with Cornell sports very discouraging.
