Some thoughts:
  • Will this mean we actually get to watch the Spengler Cup on TV in the US for once?
  • Do I have to root against them because Gadowsky is coaching?
  • Another chance for people to mispronounce Davos (which usually only happens during the World Economic Forum)

Apparently they streamed last year's on YouTube for countries without a TV deal:
https://www.spenglercup.ch/en/media/livestream (Looks like it was on TSN in Canada, but there was no US partner listed, so I guess the YouTube stream worked.)

It's not DAH-voes?  That's how I have it for 60 years.  I like I can hear the whole thing in Slovak, a series of monosyllables permeated by belches and curses on Ruthenians and Sorbs.   https://folklife.si.edu/images/blog/zapust-procession.jpg

It's Da-VOS, with the emphasis on the second syllable.  That's the pronunciation I learned when HCD came to play in Bern, watching the Spengler Cup on Swiss TV (with Ralph Krueger doing the color commentary), and taking the train there on a Eurail trip after I'd moved to Germany.

The first game for USA Collegiate Selects is against Team Canada (basically a selection of Canadians playing in European pro leagues) at 2:15pm EST, Friday December 26.  The livestream will be at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G3p-ATwhmY

There's a tiny preview video (mostly explaining the concept of College Hockey for the Central European audience) at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEeE03LxB-g

Skip to about 2:00 for the preview, which is mostly in English with Hochdeutsch subtitles (unless you want to hear what HC Fribourg-Gottèron's equipment manager has to say).

Big upset win today against hosts HC Davos, sealed by a PPG on a major penalty that came in the closing minutes of the third. Now they wait to see how the last group game between Davos and Team Canada tomorrow turns out. If my reckoning is correct, a one- or two-goal regulation win for Davos would put the College Selects top of the group and give them a bye straight into the semifinals on Tuesday. If they finish first or second, they have to play in the quarterfinals on Monday.

Anyone know if Walsh will be playing in the Omaha series? Spengler ends New Year's Eve and the series starts the second. I wonder if they hold him out Friday night if he's gassed from the Spengler cup and jet lagged.

It's the early game this time, at 9:10am EST.  If they win they get to play in the final on New Year's Eve, which is unfortunately at 6:10am EST.

After pondering this for a while, if he doesn't play, it could be a good test for next year in the event he doesn't return to Cornell.
I would like him to come back but I fear he will be signing

Considering that the other teams were all professionals, and everyone else except Team Canada had played together as a team, it's super impressive that they not only finished second, but we're tied 3-3 late in the third period of the final.

I hope (after the disappointment of losing the final wears off) they come away with a good impression of the event to go with their silver medals, and spread the word to their respective teams how much fun European hockey can be.

When I first moved to Switzerland, TV timeouts were unthinkable in European hockey, so I considered the passive advertising on the uniforms to be a good tradeoff.  Of course, now they also have two "powerbreaks" a period, plus the ads.

Some sports (cricket, rugby) even have sponsorship logos on the uniforms for national teams.

Some of the teams in the World Juniors did, too.
