I pick up a small cow bell at a yard sale. They guy thought it was from Stanford and that the "C" on it was for Cardinals. However by the look of it I think the "C" looks more like a Cornell "C". Does anyone know if CU sold or gave away cow bell at sometime in the past?

Cardinal. No s.
They suck, but they're grammatically correct.
Looks very much like this one. (https://www.ebay.com/itm/264842413968)

Checking that HitPromo site shows me this. (https://www.hitpromo.net/product/show/56/large-cow-bell) So you can easily buy one and customize it. Or, y'know, 100.

Poking around the seller's profile for a minute. They have a lot of college merch, none necessarily Cornell. However, the Stanford Cardinal (why not Cardinals??) don't seem to have ever used a C logo. My honest guess is someone got these made for some sorta Cornell alum meet-up or something of the like.

Could've been something they sold years back too. Like this one. (https://www.cornellstore.com/cornell-dairy-bar-red-cow-bell) I would wager it wasn't a giveaway item at a game because. uh. lol the noise.

The NCAA has a rule against giving out noisemakers after the RPI Big Red Freakout! game against Brown in 1987.

As distinct from Ordinal.

QuoteMany of the giveaways, combined with a well-primed student body, have resulted in frenetic noise levels designed to distract and disrupt the opposition. A lively pep band that sometimes grows to near-orchestral size on Freakout nights adds to the deafening decibel levels.
The scenario finally became so intimidating that the NCAA stepped in after some 3,500 stadium horns helped RPI blow Brown off the ice in 1987. The governing body put a restriction on the type of gift that could be given to fans at hockey games, in effect banning horns and similar noisemakers from Houston Field House and other college rinks.

Poor performance on the ice and lack of student interest has done more to decrease the noise level than the NCAA did. Currently, I am hoping that Eric Lang will be able to reverse the trend. He is cleaning house with at the moment only eight returnees and the same amount coming from the transfer portal.

looks very much to be a cornell c but i'm not aware of any noisemaker giveaway. maybe someone at the bookstore who has been there for a while would know?
I mean the block C has never been a thing for Stanford so why in the hell would he think that?

Didn't some team hand out single thunder sticks at some point? Since you need two for it to be a noise maker...
It's not quite a standard Cornell C. The interior of the Cornell C has right angles, and the cowbell C has 45 degree turns around the interior.

If a thunder stick falls in an empty hockey rink, does it make any noise?

Hopefully not.
Thanks for those tried to answer my question. I'm just going to go with it being a CU cow bell. Not that it matters but I was curious.

When I lived in Bern, Switzerland, I was involved with the local baseball club. The founder was a guy from Iowa, and so he called the club the Cardinals. In Switzerland, no one knows about the bird, but there is a brand of beer called Cardinal (https://www.cardinal.ch/). Apparently the beer people would hassle him from time to time about using their name, and he had to explain the club was named after a North American bird, not a Catholic religious official.
