USAir is running a special to 11 upstate cities. Although the link below doesn't say it, you can get the same special fares when upstate New York is your destination.

The trick to getting good deals on USAir is to *never* restrict your search to certain dates. Instead, click the box for flexible and then pick the date you need. I've found that for the exact same days of travel, searching for certain dates is frequently 30% to 70% more.
Other airlines may also have reduced their fares to Albany for the ECAC Championship weekend. Fares between San Jose and Albany on American, Continental, Northwest, United, and Delta are much lower than they were a week or two ago, as are fares between Oakland and Albany on Delta. The discounts from San Francisco aren't as impressive, and I haven't checked fares from other departure cities. Hopefully, the trip to Lake Placid will be less expensive than you originally expected.
SFO->SYR is $283 if you buy by Tuesday. Hard to beat that for a cross country flight.

And for those that USAir doesnt help, there is also Jet Blue www.jetblue.com this one is incredible, for instance, its 300 bucks round trip from jan juan puerto rico to JFK (normally that flight is 450, now American wants almost 800 for it!) and they fly to buffalo, syracuse, rochester, and from Oakland, denver and the south. Real cheap, real nice (you even save money by buying online (5bucks off each way)) and you get your own tv screen, and can pick your own seats. just my $0.02
