Setting up the game thread. Want revenge on these guys and pepper Emmett Carroll with a ton of shots. LGR!!
Penn is coming off an embarrassing home loss to Dartmouth, they are going to be feisty.
Why was it embarrassing?
Dart is 7-1, Penn is 4-5
Because Penn has had way more success in recent years; they were the #3 seed in the NCAAs in 2022 (lost to #6 Rutgers in quarterfinals, who lost to #7 Cornell in the semis), while Dartmouth has been the Ivy doormat: in the past 10 years, their only previous Ivy win was over Harvard in 2023.

Penn also lost to #16 St. Joe's, which is 7-2 but lost it's only game against a highly ranked team (#11 Duke, 11-9). Penn lost 10-11, but I watched the game and didn't think Penn's play merited such a close score. St. Joe has a killer ride, and Penn kept turning over the ball.
Let's just say that their schedule has not been a Murderer's Row. Dartmouth that is....
But Cornell also has plenty of motivation for this game: they lost to Penn twice last year, 10-11 in double overtime at Penn in the regular season, and then 9-13 at home as the host of the Ivy League tournament. That loss kept Cornell out of the NCAAs.

Ivy schedule is always difficult, no "easy" games. Fully expect Coach Buczek to have the team ready to play in all facets of the game for a full 60 minutes and avenge last year's losses to Penn(as mentioned by CU77).

"He's day-to-day right now, but trending in the right direction," Buczek said. "Fortunately, we've got an incredible training staff that gets these guys ready to go and makes sure that they're safe and healthy."

That was the gist of my joke. Seems like every eastern & near-midwestern school older than 1956 has claimed that at one point or another. I don't think I've ever heard a Syracusian say that, but I would not put it past them.

Long is playing today.
Why does ESPN+ have the game starting at 12:30?
Was the game start time changed?
Cornell schedule still says noon but ESPN+ not latching so, maybe?

Game has started (https://cornellbigred.com/sidearmstats/mlax/summary).

And Cornell scored.
2-0.
Now it's on. 4-0 Cornell.
Didn't see it, but it was important to score early and get into the all-star goalie's head a little bit.
Defensive mistake, Penn goal.
Then sharp pass from Sheehan to Waldman. Step down: 5-1 Cornell.
Mikey Long seems to be feeling pretty good today.
Dodge from side right.
6-1 Good guys.
Now 6-1 near end of first period. 7-1 with 26 seconds left.
Man, that was a laser from Sheehan. Overpowered the goalie.
Firth pass across the mouth of the goal to Kirst on the doorstep. A thing of beauty.
9-1 Cornell.
First, why was that not a cross check. Next, how did Coach call a timeout without possession?
Penn D getting physical especially on Kirst
Why did the refs stop play on a defensive push?
Quote from: jjanow99Penn D getting physical especially on Kirst
They are doubling and even triple teaming him, forcing Cornell to score with other players. Which is exactly what is happening.
It must be said: That Penn offensive is not very good.
Yeah pretty sloppy Penn offense
Long playing, Gilmartin playing, Davis playing!
10-1 at the half.
is this an opportunity to get some minutes from players down the depth chart?
trying to enjoy this season, but the number of senior starters is going to be a challenge for next year
would be nice to have some of the underclassmen at multiple positions get some time
Quote from: CU77Long playing, Gilmartin playing, Davis playing!
Great seeing Chris Davis!
Dooley seems to put us in man down at least once a game.
Penn scorer is jawing when his team is down 12-2.
Last year Penn made the finals of the Ivy League tournament. Beating us. This year at Schoellkopf they have three goals to show for the first three periods and a nine goal deficit. That is a long way to fall.
Like that Cornell is moving the ball again to begin the 4th quarter.
Even more so with a 12 to 3 lead entering the fourth. Be good to play more players, just in case injuries turn a couple of them into starters or second midfielders.
Nice 15-5 win for Cornell.
Wyatt did a terrific job in the nets today. He's looking more and more comfortable back there.
The Penn offense is not particularly strong, but the Cornell defense is also playing really well. They are making great decisions with their slides, and they are switching on the top to keep the ballcarriers from having free hands in front of the goal.
The offense looked incredible in the first half, not as much in the second half. That is likely because Penn picked things up on defense, but it also looked like Cornell kind of got away from their passing game, esp. in the third.
Jack Cascadden was too much for the Penn FOGOs today. He's doing a great job for us.
So with Chris Davis back, what is the current list of injured players who were expected to receive playing time?
Nikolic is the only one I can think of (out for the year).
Quote from: BearLoverSo with Chris Davis back, what is the current list of injured players who were expected to receive playing time?
Nikolic and Holmes.
Eight Cornell players scored goals, eight players had assists, Cornell was 12x23 on faceoffs, 24x26 on clears.
Penn 1 0 2 1 — 5
Cornell 7 3 2 3 — 15
Long 4-2—6
Kirst 2-3—5
Goldstein 2-2—4
Waldman 3-0—3
Sheehan 1-1—2
Kelleher 1-2—2
Firth 1-1—2
Luzzi 0-1—1
Staub 1-0—1
Dalton 0-1—1
Knust in goal was .706 on saves (12x17). Penn's Emmet Carroll — is there a lacrosse synonym for sieve? — was .348 (8x23) although it felt like a team effort to fall from the team's season-to--date .548 save pct.
When Penn was trying to clear the ball, Kirst played like a two-way midfielder. Jeez, he is good. The South will have to find somebody really good to give them a fifth Tewaaraton in six years. (Cornell's only winner was Rob Pannell in 2013.)
Next up is Albany, Tuesday at 3 pm per both schools' schedules so let's see if that's for real. They are 3-7 and against common Cornell opponents they lost 14-8 to Penn and beat Hobart 17-12. Then at Brown Saturday which, before today's (3/29) Yale game, is 0-1 Ivy (1-goal loss to Penn) and 3-5 overall.
Other Ivy games this weekend:
Princeton 11, @Dartmouth 8
@Harvard 17, Binghamton 12
Brown @ Yale (3:30)
Every Ivy team has at least one loss, Yale and Penn have two.
