Thread hasn't been started yet? Hopefully I'm a lucky charm. Looks like we got the win in their barn (albeit shootout). Make it 2 for 2.
And yes, Trotsky, I have collected my free tchotchke :)
Pep band enthusiasts rejoice, Clarkson's band is here :)
Two young guys in suits watching warmups from the bench area. No idea who they were, possibly scratched seniors? They were grabbing pucks and stuff to clean up though, so maybe not?
Seniors left the ice last, mostly. Stanley and Penney giving phantom high-fives to a Castagna that is not there :(

I hope this euphemism doesn't put anybody out of the lineup.
Kovich immediately to the box for boarding.

Euphemism?? They gave the students roller banners...
Very good early pressure.
I'm not sure that was actually a penalty, but so glad we kept them off the board.
Whew. That was fun.
Quote from: TrotskyI'm not sure that was actually a penalty, but so glad we kept them off the board.
From my viewpoint, someone for sure tripped that Knight. And good thing, because otherwise he'd have almost surely scored.
Both teams are trading high pressure offensive zone moments. We had some good ones, so did they. Two more periods like that, we should solve this goalie.
Entertaining period for sure. We had the edge in high quality chances, especially considering Clarkson had 2 full power plays. PK improvement is a welcome development. Now, about OUR power play ...

You mean the powerless play? Haha. It looked less bad tonight. Improvement!

I thought that was the case in real time but when I watched the replay Shane made a clean blocked pad save, then everybody kinda flopped all over each other.
What the fuck was that "defense"???

Hmmm. Coulda been, now that I think about it.
Not the first time Bancroft has had a clear lane to shoot and he makes some cutesy pass instead that gets easily intercepted.
I thought PP1 was bad. PP2 is an abomination that can barely get in the zone. Please just play PP1 for all 2 minutes next time.
I shudder to imagine the Lynah cheers in days of yore for #55.
Nice to see Colgate, RPI, Union all losing. And Cornell. Oh, shit.
Srsly if we can turn this around we could pick up 3 points on EVERYBODY we are chasing.
That is a save.

Oh, never mind. It's not Sparkles.
MACK TIES IT
WOW!!!!!
I may have traumatized my cat.
So I was just watching the game tonight and heard the crowd singing a version of "Hey Baby" or better known as the Josh Bailey song to Islanders fans. What are the Cornell fans singing (the words)?
God damn ever since we scored the Clarkson team is trying to pummel faces after every whistle.

Clarkson very much on their heels and also very much gooning it up now.

That was a dominant period except for our first 2 pp chances.

Great to see Riley Nash and Colin Greening back on the Lynah ice (bench)!

Why do they sing that? The Josh Bailey song was "Hey Josh Bailey. Ho Ha. I wanna know. Will you score a goal? " It started because Bailey was a pass first player who went through some long droughts. Maybe the Cornell fans should use the Islander fans' words and sing it to the power play? "Hey Power Play. Ho Ha. I wanna know - will you score a goal?"
Hey, You Suck chant goes acapella :)

Try harder, lol. I think it dates back a while, back when Cornell's identity was based on beating the crap out of the other team physically.

No. The Baby cheer predates the Bailey one by a zillion years. We did it before the NHL copycats. And ours has character.
I am an Isles fan, but our last great cheer was "Stand up and shout it go Nystrom and Howatt," circa 1977.

Back in the early 2000s Cornell had a player named Stephen Baby who was, to put it mildly, humongous. He was one of the senior leaders on the 2003 frozen four team - the guy whose sure thing game tying goal in the semi was deflected away by Mike Ayer's mask in one of the craziest and most heartbreaking saves I've ever seen.
Baby was physical, but kind of in the range of normal for that team. Greg Hornby was by far the most physical forward of that era, and Doug Murray (our ill-tempered Swede) was arguably the most physical player in the league at the time. But they weren't named Baby and Hornby wasn't even that big so they didn't get a song.
Lynah was an incredibly fun place to be during that era.
This has felt like a Lake Placid game. Well played and smart, by both squads. A lot on the line.

They've gotta elevate the puck when they can: all of the Clarkson goalie's big saves have come from kicking out his pads.

Yup. Grady made that point. Nick HAD him!
Jesus Martino is like Predator.
RPI back up on Dartmouth. SLU tied at Gate. Union up at sucky Harvard.
And they score. Hook him harder next time.
No way around it that was just a hard core great goal.

This is the time for The Brown Play (TM).
Why do I believe in this team. Well. 30 seconds. Surely we can score 3 times in 30 seconds. Ian Shane hat trick send us home.
And both times it's one of our players who clears the zone for Clarkson on errant passes, leading to the ENG.

Ian Shane did not in fact score a hat trick. Final score 1-3.

This team just cannot play with more skaters than the other team. Good lord.
Oh well. Somebody was gonna win and it could easily have been us.
Just keep gelling and getting ready. We'll beat them twice in Potsdam.
Double depressing considering how badly we outplayed them for long stretches. One of our better efforts of the season, but their goalie made some huge saves and they capitalized on the few opportunities we gave them.
Clarkson wisely waited until the Big Red players were off the ice to taunt the student section.
Think anyone will notice if we put Nash and Greening out there on the power-play tomorrow night?
This is still a team that can make noise in the post-season.

Indeed, I hope their takeaway is, except for that one miscue, THAT is how you play defense. First game I feel like I haven't seen us running around in our own end. And against a very good team.
Little less hero puck from Bancroft and a bit more puck luck and we'll close out strong. Too bad we spotted the rest of the league too many points.
Does Lynah still smell like a men's bathroom? It's the little things in life that you cherish for decades.

And their goalie tripped on the floor and ate it mid-taunting, much to the delight of the remaining students.

Yep. Now that I've had a minute to think, that was a really solid game from the Big Red, limiting Clarkson to like, 12 shots on goal? I think? That's what the scoreboard said.
Bancroft was making me furious with the dangling and dancing. You have a shot. Shoot. Good things happen when you shoot. Especially cause he coughed it up one time too many.
Quote from: stereax. Especially cause he coughed it up one time too many.
Yeah: he was a bit of a turnover machine tonight, and it's not the first time that's happened this season.
Shots on goal were 25 to 11 and we still couldn't get a fucking win. It's crazy to me that you guys are taking this like a moral victory when we just pissed away our chance for a bye. We need to learn how to score and it's ridiculous how many games we've "outplayed" the opponent and come out with a loss. I've even been bothered by how positive Schafer has seemed about the team in such a bad season.
Losing sucks. This was not a moral victory or any other kind of victory, it was a loss. Zero points. And losing sucks.
That said, yes, there were significant stretches of the game where Cornell did outplay Clarkson. OK, the power plays were not really part of those stretches (what else is new?) but they did a pretty good job in their own end for the most part, and generated more than a few good chances in the Clarkson end. Langenegger had to come up with some clutch saves in what was probably one of his best games of the season, maybe his career. Again, it wasn't good enough to get the win, and that sucks. But if they can keep playing like that, they'll beat SLU and RPI. Play like that and they'll have a decent shot against Union. Play like that and they'll handle whoever they face in the first round (Cornell is still mathematically alive for a bye, but it's EXTREMELY unlikely), and in the quarters, who knows?
Of course, they are also fully capable of blowing any or all of the games mentioned above, I don't dispute that. But this loss feels a bit different than the ones to Dartmouth or the one against Union. Call me a fanatic, but I'm thinking they're not quite dead yet.
Hey Babe (baabey) I wanna know if you will kill someone. It pays tribute to Stephen Babe

Ding ding ding. This exactly. This wasn't a roll-over-and-give-up type game (even if the wind was completely sucked out of the sails after goal 2 for a bit). Hard fought. Good defensive effort. We lost. It sucked. We also looked a lot better than we have in MANY of our losses this year. Keep the strong play going and things should go our way.
Plus, the real song is "Hey, Baby, I want to know---- will you be my girl?"
No accent on the a. I don't know why it keeps showing up with one.

There is a macro for that. I think Age baked Baby into the coding of eLynah but whoever did it - it's been here for as long as I can remember.

Schafer agrees:
Quote[We did] a lot of good things, but you don't get three points on a lot of good things. You get three points when you win.
I don't want them coming out of the locker room and going, 'Poor us. We had a good game, we did a good job, we kept them [to] 11 shots on net,'" Schafer said. "What we did was [make] two monumental mistakes that cost us both goals. That's what we did. All the other stuff is just extracurricular."

It was a lot of fun seeing so many players from the past in Lynah last night. Can't believe it's already been five years since the 19-20 season. I couldn't tell if last night's game was a flashback to the days of locking things down defensively or if both teams were just sloppy? As Pierre McGuire would say, "I was right in the sight line" of the first Clarkson goal. I was surprised that the guy who made the entry did a drop pass. I thought he had a lane to the goal. The shot looked like it handcuffed Shane. I thought he should have had that one and wish that he had since I believe that was the only shot on goal that period for Clarkson. The Big Red offense came to life that second period. I'd love to see how hard that Suda blast was. Probably not that sexy of a number but as hard of a shot as we've seen all year. Can't believe that guy stopped it. The game definitely turned into a next goal wins kind of game. Cornell's breakaway didn't go while Clarkson's did. I was sure hoping to build off of last week and continue to make things interesting with regards to a bye. I really wanted two more guaranteed home games instead of just the one. Tonight is going to be so much fun regardless of standings. Looking forward to it.
This is the quote (https://cornellsun.com/2025/02/21/clarkson-finds-late-go-ahead-goal-to-sink-mens-hockey/) that sticks out for me.
Quote from: Schafer"[DeSantis] makes a great move, but we talked about [before] the game how [Langenegger] will go down to his belly, or he'll give up the upper top part of the net," Schafer said. "And we didn't get it there."
They talked about it before the game! Several guys had good opportunities to slightly elevate second chances. Pay attention!
There have been other goalies who gave up rebounds on every low shot but we're blasting it high all game long.
This is why we're not scoring. Attention to detail.
