Just wondering when the actual details like TIME shows up since we are now 3 days out.
6pm
Food, alcoholic beverages, soft drinks, merchandise available
Seems like a bad idea to me, some people might just stay in there instead of going to the game.
Quote from: chimpfoodSeems like a bad idea to me, some people might just stay in there instead of going to the game.
It doesn't shut down at game time?
There's supposed to be screens to watch the game if I'm reading it correctly
More room for us inside

You're just trolling, right? A bot with some sentient abilities took over your keyboard? No sane Cornell hockey fan would be out in the lobby when we're playing Harvard. It's, like, the same as summer 1968, you're in the Catskills and you say, Nah, that Woodstock thing is just another rock concert, so I'll stay on the highway and watch people abandon their cars.

You overestimate the people showing up to these games
I'm planning to roll up around exactly 6, mostly due to the bus LOL. If anyone else will be there, please give a shout, I'd genuinely love to meet some of y'all :)

This is at the very least going to result in a ton of people showing up late to the game and missing the whole fish toss
Also... is it against the spirit of the fish toss to pick up a plushie fish and not toss it? I really don't want to bean Sean Schmidt in the head, which is more likely than the fish making it to the ice...

opening a6 6pm is kind of interesting given the flow to seats. By the time you got in and tried to get food/drink its probably 630 at best.
But its athletics. If you want to try this event, at least give people time to peruse it.

I know plenty of people that go to the games that would rather get drunk in Newman than watch the game.
I'm torn on whether incentive to get to the game early will result in more people in seats at puck drop or fewer.
Leaning fewer.

The Harvard game hasn't had a problem attracting people to their seats early. It's the other games on the schedule where half the crowd shows up late. So this pregame thing will only hurt the crowd, I think.

Geez, you are the learned one. "Fewer" is the right wording for the context. But in a blue collar bar, you'd be outed in an instant. That and ordering a Courvoisier. I have sometimes checked myself and switched to "less" just so as not to sound like an Ivy League asshole. And I'll say "literally..." when the correct word is "figuratively blown off his feet."

I made the mistake of using the word "Cornellian" once around a friend who thought such things pretentious.
You want to drink at game, in the stands, teleport yourself back to the 1980s era at Lynch / Schoellkopf. Or go to one of the increasing number of arenas with alcohol at the rink. This is the Sacred Heart Martire Arena, brand new, with a bar in one corner of the rink, a VIP lounge (and bar, of course) in the other corner, and hard seltzer stands in the concours, which is maybe 25 wide, so people can walk easily and, for the most crowded games, another 500 standing room people can see the game. As at the new Colgate rink, the new RIT (Polisseni aka Paychex Center) rink, and others. Which also have drink areas. Ditto Arizona State. And others.
Also, the Martire seats are comfy. One doesn't have to sit on a wooden bench with Spirit Air amounts of legroom to be a rabid fan. This was the Friday game against Cornell, students still on break. It was full up Saturday.
Cornell already sells drinks at the rink. This is just an easier extension of that.
I think part of this is to make parking/security easier. if a couple hundred come at 6 thats less coming at 630 to deal with.

"Cornell Sells Alcohol at Lynah" is true in fact but not in widespread practice. It's Section M (the red line section behind the visitor bench, plus the top of sections L and N, plus the balcony over the open end of the rink.
The other rinks, the rule is a bit more expansive: You have ID showing you're 21 or over, you can drink. This would thrill my grandma, Mt. Holyoke '97, who believed one should limit one's alcohol consumption as much as possible, to, say communion wine.
Quote from: Cornell, 2023Based on seat location and the ticket package selected by members, they will qualify for one of the following tier levels: Premium Seating, Tier One, Tier Two, or Tier Three. Pricing is unique to each of the tiers, and is detailed below.
Premium Seating: $469
Premium Seating includes reserved seats in the balcony area, with access to alcoholic beverage purchases at games.
Tier One: $399
Tier One seating includes Section M, all seats located in the top row of Sections L and N, and Balcony Standing Room. Tier One tickets located in the Balcony Standing Room area also include access to alcoholic beverage purchases at games.
Is anyone getting ticket carded at the balcony bar? I'm not a tier 1 ticket holder and my experience at intermission has been walk up, order beer, receive beverage with financial transaction. You just have to consume it there and I guess they don't want you loitering near the balcony during the game if your seats aren't there.

I'm just hoping Schafer isn't going to have to give the student section another between-periods scolding over the PA like last year, when the "FUCK YOU HARVARD" chants droned on for nearly the entire game.
It is PACKED here. Rolled up at like 6:03 and the line is insane.

It started up once, but died out pretty quickly. Thankfully.
yeah. It was the disorganized mess I expected.
not nearly room to even get around.
Some people went to the food section and found empty tables? did they actually sell food over there?
20 min wait to get a donut.
lots of people with beers though
they needed about double the space to make it enjoyable for what little there was to do there.
Quote from: upprdeckthey needed about double the space to make it enjoyable for what little there was to do there.
They definitely did need more space. And also more time, which would have helped the space issue. If they do this again, they really should open at 5:30 or even at 5:00.
The merch was great!
Hope they have more of it in the store

The other problem is that there were lots of people who didn't want to go in there, but they roped off the normal entrance and forced
everybody to go through the circus. It caused a big back-up in the hallway outside the "boulevard".

They definitely sold food in the back. Saw tacos and mac and cheese. Definitely agree there needed to be more space but I found it enjoyable :)

Just got a survey for the Boulevard experience - sharing here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeIbRc512QP7y_RkMCvRdpAbQCx_99AH5gxICfJ3EyIWOxUmw/viewform) for anyone who was at the event! I assume it hit everyone's emails, but just in case.
Personally, I tried to emphasize the crampedness of the Boulevard. Definitely felt like there wasn't enough space. The event itself was pretty fun - it's not meant to be something super intense, just a fun way to get into the mood and unwind before the game. I think it succeeded really well at that. The younger Lynah patrons all seemed delighted, the current students seemed to enjoy it as well, and even the older folks appreciated the atmosphere.

If this becomes a regular event they will learn from it and improve.

There was a bypass once you got through the lines into the gym. I would have liked a game only entrance as well but if not I do wish that there were more defined lines for getting in instead of people everywhere and nobody really knowing what to do.

Call me a grumpy old man, if you like. But,I come to a hockey game to the game itself. I was not pleased that they routed us into "the boulevard" when I came to watch a hockey game. Nuff said!!
My grumpiness also extends to seemingly every game having some sort of promotion associated with it. Is it not enough that we're playing Clarkson without also needing to give away a bunch of cowboy hats?

I guess that's needed with all of the pre-game haunts in C-Town having closed.

I assume it hit everyone's emails, but just in case.

I don't think many of the games this season had real promos. There was the eyeblack night for I think the student appreciation night, and then the whiteout with rally towels, and then Harvard was Harvard and now the RPI game with hats. A bunch of games are named (like veteran appreciation) but don't have anything with them. I think it's a little gimmicky but eh. Like it or not, Cornell hockey isn't as big as it used to be and if things like that get people in the door, so be it.

Can't speak as to the history of C-Town but I don't think I've really ever seen anyone pregaming a hockey game anymore. Doors open at 6 on a Friday when there are classes earlier in the day, plus getting to Lynah is a hassle especially when you're doing public transport and you're either hauling ass up a hill from Collegetown or taking an hourly bus to Bartels and cutting between a few buildings.
it was comical to the amount of people struggling to park on tower rd to find out that the access to the sidewalk at the soccer complex is gone and then the easy access to the biotech sidewalk is also gone. no signage at all to make it easy to figure out where to go to get to lynah.
Since Harvard was going to be the best attended game maybe an email explaining to people who don't show up every week.

Agreed. I spent a solid 5-10 minutes trying to figure out how to get in before just following a bunch of others. I usually enter in the front near Section A, so...

Do students really consider walking from C-town a haul? We always considered it a convenience in years I lived there. Easy compared to the haul up Libe Slope from West Campus.

West campus to upper ag quad at 8 AM was a nice walk as I remember. 20 something me didn't need coffee to get in gear either.

Consider: I am a fairly out-of-shape 20-year-old law student with a high resting heart rate that spikes into areas my heart rate tracker app considers "xtreme" when I'm dragging myself uphill (156 bpm, I measured it back in November when I wwas heading up for a women's game). The first time I walked up from Myron Taylor to Lynah, I had to take about three breaks because it was getting difficult to breathe. This probably says more about me than it does the slope, at this point.
What was the passport activity they mentioned in the questionnaire?
Quote from: upprdeckWhat was the passport activity they mentioned in the questionnaire?
They handed out a little card with a bunch of "stations" on it, e.g. one for the campus store, one for the meal table, etc. As you went to each one, they'd give you a sticker. Once you had stickers for every station, you could turn in the card for a bear keychain.

Wondering if that was advertised at all? I never saw anything about that promo or I may have participated
Big Red Boulevard was a good idea, launched with all the promise and polish of early Windows 95. Or our first year fighting World War II. Or Tesla QC the first couple years.
"Boulevard"? It was a crowded street with imprecise traffic patterns. BRB was the left side of Newman Arena (as you'd look in from the concourse), with the practice netting up around the arena center (the basketball court itself) not available for use and the far right side not used. It was cramped after the first 15 minutes.
Cheese, crackers, cold cuts and excellent doughnuts were free. (The doughnuts reminds me of the Cornell farm store that we always stopped at in the fall, and now it's gone gone gone. I think because it wasn't making money.) Wine was $7 for a modest pour. Beer was available, ditto soft drinks. There were a couple real entrees at the far back, $10, that were okay but I believe not available when the doors opened. It was clear this was not catered by Hotel students with their grades on the line. I sometimes think we should wow visitors with Hotel School catering at Lynah/Newman/Schoellkopf alongside the usual burgers-hot dogs-popcorn fare there is now. Maybe CU couldn't turn a profit but I bet enterprising Hotel / Johnson School roommates could be in the black quickly.
The Campus Store pop-up was really, really crowded. PSP, the people who make the great hats and sportwear (and who have been at the Newman concourse for some games), was not in on this. Why not let in non-Cornell vendors?
There was a photo booth with a step and repeat background with a cutout Big Red Bear and the human BRB (photo below), a couple of games such as throwing snow at a target. There were a couple things for littler kids. There were 10-15 small standup high-top table rounds the size of an X-Large pizza tray, not hardly enough for the crowd that surged in. We were in the first 50 in the doors and we did not give up our table.
There was a ~bingo card given to each person, and if you got ~9 stickers from visiting the locations, you got a prize but it was, I thought, an underwhelming trinket Big Red keychain. Would've been nice if 10 lucky fans who filled their cards were randomly picked for a T-shirt.
Yes, there were TVs there. Despite some comments ("How dare Cornell lure you away from watching the game in person?" ), I thought it was a nice way to see the game if you were in danger of missing the start of the first or second period. Lighten up, Lynah All Too Faithful.
BR Blvd. can only get better. Cornell under the new athletic leadership is trying. Give BRB Rev. 1.0 a C+ or if it makes Cornell feel better, a Harvard A-minus. Don't abandon this.
Oh, yeah, forgot: Cornell is using Ithaca HS students rather than Cornell undergrads to work Big Red Boulevard. Then : They are not 15-year-old townies, rather we are, some of us are, getting really, really old.

You don't look a day over 72!
I would do bad, bad things to get doughnuts in the dining halls.

HARVARD A MINUS. 100% agreed with all your points - the "passport" (7 stickers) was really neat, at least to me, because it swayed my hand into actually going through the Boulevard and not just stopping at the 1 or 2 stations that piqued my interest. The little bear keychain, while a wee bit underwhelming, is still nice and I'll be keeping it as a memento. Didn't get to try the doughnuts, sadly :(
But yeah, the biggest issue I had with it was how cramped it all was. More space would have been really nice, as well as some way to form lines.
Wonderful pics, love Touchdown and his oversized fish friend!!!
