New Thread. We will see how Cornell does against an excellent Dartmouth defense.
Can Cornell keep Dartmouth under 24 points as well, as it would be nice to see the defense step up.
Agreed Dartmouth is very good. Run the football to keep Dartmouth's offense off the field. Cornell does not have the defense to host another track meet like the Penn game. Sure that may mean some three and outs, but Cornell has the passing tools to make a big play if we can run the football. Going back to Pop Warner football I can remember our coaches saying it's only 10 yards for a first down. Really not that far to move the sticks. Run the football and if nothing else the game will be closer at the end.
The Weekly Sports Luncheons in Ithaca just ended. Swanstrom gave a very detailed discussion on recruiting and said that according to the rankings they have the 132nd ranked class in all of Division I (FBS and FCS). I appreciate one thing he said: That he is willing to do the work acknowledging that George Seifert and Jim Knowles were not successful here. I will say that Swanstrom has been given a ton of resources that were not available to prior coaches including Coach Archer.

What does this mean?
Both George Seifert (75-76) and Jim Knowles (04-09) struggled at Cornell but then went on to great success in the NFL and major college football. Jim knowles had a lot more success at Cornell than Seifert, as the team when 6-4 in his second year as head coach. Knowles was basically a .500 coach at Cornell but like Seifert he struggled to develop a consistent winning program.
Dan Swanstrom brings an impressive resume to the East Hill and despite the football teams struggles this season, the Big Red have shown some flashes of brilliance this fall. Even during the loss to Penn, the team kept playing hard to the end. It also appears AD Nicki Moore has garnered more support for the football program too. It's been over thirty years since our last Ivy title. Go Big Red!
Poor choice of words on my part per Knowles.
A little trickeration, first down Cornell, driving in the first quarter.
48 yard FG on the first drive, 3 and out but a bad punt for Dartmouth gives us the ball at midfield. Can't do anything with it and Wang is... too good a punter for a quick kick as he punts it into the end zone instead of having it downed inside the 10.
Another 3 and out for the D. Nice start.
I love how Dartmouth tackles. Our guys should take notes.
We're not running on those guys. We're going to have to beat them with the passing game.
Another fake punt on 4th and 1. Change formation before the snap, sneak up the middle to convert. Cornell in the red zone as the first quarter is ending. Still 3-0.

And on the second play of the second quarter, another FG to go up 6-0.
Two missed tackles after Dartmouth receptions.

After seeing Dartmouth's guy nail Pope alone in the flat earlier.
Nice pitch and catch. Touchdown Big Red!

Maybe Christian Madison could conduct a tackling clinic.
The passing game is opening up the run a little bit with the RPO.

Need a back who can break tackles or move the pile to have a consistent running game.
Oski!!!
Ryder Kurtz knee injury. It doesn't look good.
Poor pass by Jameson, Dartmouth interception in the end zone.
Rush yards
Cornell 56
Dartmouth 18

He is not a very accurate passer, for all of his skills. On the pass before the Woodring TD he overthrew an open Kurtz and he nearly pulled Woodring out of the end zone. He makes up for it with his legs - as a rusher and giving himself time - but it does limit things. Still, a lead at the half is unexpected, so I'll take it. Hope we can keep up in the second half this week.
Hoo boy. A great run by Wang on 3d and 14 to get the first down followed by a terrible decision on a sideline throw that gets undercut, picked and returned to the 20. The return was pretty spectacular, tbh, including hurdling a tackler and a bit of Barry Sanders shimmy. Dartmouth now on the doorstep. First and goal from the 8.
More missed tackles and Dartmouth scores on a QB draw. 14-13 Green.
Excellent drive down the field with passes on the scramble and great catches, but Jameson tosses another pick at the 2-yard line.
It was a pump and go but the dback had it diagnosed.
Cornell intercepts it right back at the Dartmouth 24-yard line!

Great play by a LB to cut off a route and hold on.
The option play yielded some good running yards.
Run option again and a Cornell touchdown!
Cornell went for 2. It was open but Jameson threw it too far in front of the receive in the back of the end zone.
WOW Fake handoff to Pope completely fools the defender - who blows up Pope - and Wang runs up the middle for 14 and the score.
Cornell goes for 2 with a trick play. Wang pitch to WR Doryn Smith who throws to a wide open Woodring in the back of the end zone but ... not a good pass. Still, Cornell up 19-14 with a little over a minute left in the third quarter.
Dartmouth accidentally fields the kickoff with a knee down at the 15, and the D swarms the RB for a loss of 3 on first down. Keep it up...
Cornell is playing great defense today. Yes, they've missed some tackles, but they are holding up well against the Dartmouth attack.
Incredible cluch defensive drive. Stop for a loss of 3, near-pick, short run on 3d and 13. Third quarter ends with the Red up 19-14 and Dartmouth seemingly letting the clock run out when they are going to have to punt out of the end zone and. I think?, into the wind.

Agree. Totally revamped base run D that is closing gaps. Very different issue than open field tackling.
I hope we've found something in the run game against Dartmouth. Both the veer option and the backfield run option have had some success.
Bad snap on the punt we came so close to it and somehow the punter ripped one with a good bounce that crossed midfield. Wang with a keeper gets the first on third and long but we're in Dartmouth territory again.
Beautiful play by Jameson. RPO, looked like he might run, but stopped at the LoS and tossed a strike to the receiver at the goal line.
Awesome play!
Some great running from Tucker and Pope get the red into the red zone before some scrambling from Wang gives him time to hit Musungu in the end zone and Cornell is up 26-14 with 10 minutes to go. That was a very nice touch pass away from the direction he was rolling.

I remember Cornell playing a 3-4. Did they change to a 4-3?
Cornell interception at the Dartmouth 34, and a good running play for 10 yards to start. A good line push after that.
Any score here will make it really tough for the Big Green.
I would absolutely kick a field goal here. Go up 15.
Dartmouth QB lost the ball before his arm went forward on the pass, fumbled, and taken to the house by Cornell!
36-14 Cornell, 5:41 to go.
Dartmouth scores a touchdown quickly, and adds a two pointer.
Cornell 36-22, 2:28 left.
Let's see if Cornell can run the ball a little and call it a day.
Cornell field goal.
39-22 with 58 seconds left.
Great win by the Big Red!! Let's keep it rolling next week!
What a game. Great for these guys on senior day. Defense came out.
I hoped the Big Red could keep Dartmouth under 24 and the defense stepped up. Nice win!
Incredible. Cornell, with a win next Saturday over Columbia, has a chance, maybe, to finish in a multi-way tie for second. Requires only one team in first, Harvard, no other ties for first, and the 4-2 teams, Dartmouth and Columbia, to lose.
Team Ivy Finale Time
Harvard 5-1 Yale 12:00
Dartmouth 4-2 Brown 12:00
Columbia 4-2 Cornell 1:00
Cornell 3-3 @ Columbia 1:00
Yale 3-3 @ Harvard 12:00
Penn 2-4 @ Princeton 1:00
Brown 2-4 @ Dartmouth 12:00
Princeton 1-5 Penn 1:00
Regardless, a win over Columbia moves Cornell to a winning Ivy record, 4-3, and a 5-5 finish overall. Big improvement on 2023's 1-6 Ivy, 3-7 overall. Brown making the end-of-game, winning field goal is costing us a chance to go from worst to second in the league.
I was kinda thinking of the Dartmouth opponents this weekend working out: win hockey, lose football. Instead, we get a football team that has put up 137 points in 3 games. There have probably been times in the previous decade when we had trouble generating 137 yards total offense in a football game.
Beating Columbia will be no easy task. They are a balanced team offensively and defensively. Swanstrom has the Cornell Big Red Football program headed in the right direction regardless of the outcome of the Columbia game.

Absolutely true. If you want to be paranoid, and who isn't when it's our own team: If Cornell gets too good in football, too quickly, some mid-level D1 teams will come sniffing around and offer something on the high side of a half-million a year. The Swanstroms have 3 children and that, at an Ivy-caliber private school, could cost a million dollars to put the trio through, so you can't have too much in the bank.
I worry the same about Nicki Moore. She has the skills and outgoing nature that could land her at a B1G school as AD. Every one of those schools that hasn't hired a female AD will have to sooner or later, whether they like it or not, and it will be more palatable if you find an AD who's the most qualified, period. One recent factor favoring staying in the Ivy League for Moore and Swanstrom: NIL money is going to put more loud-mouth alumni in the AD's and coach's face. Do you want to make the most money, or have a decent life. I mean, the kinds of major issues an AD faces at Cornell is trying to explain to the Ithaca Coalition for the Environment that no matter how you will it, natural grass will not grow inside a field house.
Story in the Cornell Daily Sun:
Football Upsets Dartmouth in Triumphant Salute to Seniors (https://cornellsun.com/2024/11/16/football-upsets-dartmouth-in-triumphant-salute-to-seniors/)
It's nice to have an additional view of the game beyond the Cornell PR story.
Cornell played two freshman on the OL for most of the game, in addition to freshman DB Tyler Gibson who made two great plays on defense (QB sack and an interception). OL play has improved greatly under this coaching staff. Going into a full offseason under their new strength coach, it should provide even more improvement going forward.
Are we... good? Bad? Cromulent?
Quote from: TrotskyAre we... good? Bad? Cromulent?
We certainly aren't bad.
A great win on Saturday against a very good Dartmouth football team. The key was running the ball for 175 yards and winning time of possession by nearly 10 minutes, thus keeping the Big Green offense off the field. In terms of the running game, we didn't have many long runs just ongoing gains and enough yardage to move the sticks. Go Big Red!
