Title: Cornell vs Princeton exhibition 10/19/24
Post by: chimpfood on October 19, 2024, 07:49:45 PM
We played pretty well and the crowd was unreal for an exhibition game. Great to see Walsh come back and get the empty netter after going off injured.

4-2, Princeton got a late one with an extra attacker and we got an empty netter back

Fegeras and Devlin were some noticeable absences today. I don't know what the deal with devlin is but I saw fegeras with a cast on his wrist. Not ideal when an NHL draft pick could be missing extended time but our defense seems deep this year, the offense seems like it will suffer more from the loss of Fegeras than the defense.

Yeah I think it might have technically been a scrimmage and not an exhibition and that's why.

The Toronto exhibition is already scheduled on ESPN plus so that one should be streamed hopefully. Also apparently (according to big red tix)  it's sold out? If that's true we might be the only team that can say we sell out exhibition games.

Devlin had a scooter to get around.  Luckily they have depth.  The sophomores that did play, played like they've been there for years.  Kraft, Walsh, Robertson and Castagna drove most of the offense.  I thought O'Leary might have played my favorite game of the night.  He had one play that stopped a zone entry, stripped at least three guys of the puck and lined a guy up trying to come out of their D zone and forced a turnover.  It might have been the same play where he drew the penalty and got into a bit of a scrap and took a penalty of his own.  But it also might have been in addition to that play.  What I'm trying to say is he was in mid season form already.  I love this type of matchup early.  I think the competition of another D-1 school gets the boys ready for the season better than two Canadian matchups.  I get why they did this one, but I'd like to see more of them even if it means having to return the favor and travel to Princeton.

Charlie Major stood out among the freshman.  He got some first power play unit time.  He also had one rush where he flew through the neutral zone.

They debuted a new EV ice resurfacer.  THE MAMOTH.

It's great to be back at the rink.

Walsh, Kraft and Robertson scored I think, can't remember the other one. Major had 2 assists and I can't really remember the rest of those.

Castagna scored in the second.  Kraft had one taken away due to someone in the crease (can't remember if he got one that counted).  Actually made it through a full game without a challenge or review.

Looks like Major is slotting in for Seger on the 1st PP unit, with good effect.

Good thing we're as deep as we ever have been in the Schafer era

I don't know. We have 6 good D and can roll 4 lines when we'd healthy. At this point though we cannot afford any more injuries. None of our other D really played last year. If we are down those three forwards plus Seger from last year, we add Kovich (injured last season), Major, Donaldson, ???. Any more injuries and we are really dipping into players who don't have college experience.

I didn't want to jinx it, but we were remarkably healthy last season. The lowest number of injuries I can remember. I'm sure some guys played through pain and hockey players being who they are, I bet there were some who should have sat.  But I feel we were lucky avoiding major injuries to key players, which has been a rarity through the years.  Now FOUR before the season really starts?  Eek, I'm nervous.

I'm really not too concerned. We have a big roster and tons of guys with NCAA experience and to be honest nobody that's hurt has just been a role player so far other than fegeras.
