For context, Surrey came in to bat on the last day needing 221 runs to beat Somerset.  Since Surrey entered the match with a game and a half lead in the standings over second-place Somerset and two games to go after this one, they decided to play for a draw.  This meant avoiding losing the ten wickets (i.e., ten batters getting out) that Somerset needed to win, and not worrying about scoring the runs.  (If Surrey didn't score the runs but also didn't lose ten wickets by the end of play, the match would be a draw.)  It looked like it was going to work, as they'd only lost three wickets (while scoring 95 runs) with an hour left to play, but Somerset spin bowlers Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan took six more wickets over the course of that hour, leaving Surrey needing to survive about five minutes with their worst batter facing Leach.
