I went to my first Cornell baseball game of the year today and my first ever at Booth field. Starting with the game, Cornell pitched a gem until the ninth and played sound defense to complete the sweep. Although we are playing well in the Ivy so far and the league seems weak this year I doubt that we will really be able to compete with Penn or Columbia, I'm hoping for a top half of the league finish. Cornell's jerseys are pretty sweet but I bet they won't be so glad when they're wearing black while playing on turf on a 90 degree day in may.
As for the new field, I don't love it. The one thing that I do like is the vibe of literally being out in the middle of a field playing baseball. To start the negatives off, the place was no more than 15 percent full but the parking lot had no spots so I had to park at the soccer practice fields and walk about a quarter of a mile through a field of tall grass to get the the field. It wasn't too bad today but on a wetter day or in the late spring when it is overgrown that just won't be feasible. Oh, and you can't find the field on Apple Maps or google maps so you better just remember where it is. Saving the most obvious for last, it is just too far out of the way. It was nice seeing some older people and families out there but there were almost no students, presumably due to the location. I miss the central location of Hoy field and I have so many good memories of biking to the top of the parking garage and watching games from there. The new facilities and buildings out at Booth seem nice but I would have much preferred they stayed at Hoy.

Where's the cornfield?
That is beautiful.
Those seats look comfortable.
I have never seen a ball field with square foul areas. That's weird-looking.
Edit: Took a look at some other pictures and it's not as square as it appears.
Well I was wrong, we can hang with Penn and now we're second in the Ivy League and 2 games up on third place. I'm very excited to see where this season goes.
Cornell rallied from an 8-0 deficit to win Game 1 against Yale 10-9 in 10 innings on Saturday and went on to sweep the doubleheader. Cornell is 10-4 in the Ivies, only one game behind first-place Columbia. Cornell plays Yale again today and hosts Columbia for a three-game series next weekend. No one else is over .500 in the Ivy League.

Unfortunately Cornell couldn't pull off the series sweep. At 10-5 in Ivy play, Cornell trails only league leader Columbia by 1.5 and has a two-game lead over third place Princeton. Behind 8-7 Princeton are three teams at 7-8 and another at 6-9.
Made the Ivy tournament, already a successful season in my eyes.

yep. was upset yesterday when they blew a 4 run lead in the bottom of the ninth to get swept in a doubleheader at Brown but they won the third game of the series to clinch a spot in the ILT.
Playing their first game in the Ivy tournament, Cornell beat Princeton 9-7 earlier today. They play the winner of the other play-in game on Saturday afternoon.

I hope that works out better for us than it did in the lax tournament.
Nice Cornell win.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought I was losing my mind when the game never appeared this afternoon and the Cornell calendar said the game was on Sunday.
I would be curious to know what kind of problem could arise so abruptly that playoff games would need to be postponed....

As per Cornell Athletics' website, because of the move none of the remaining games will be streamed. A bad look for Columbia (which has had a lot of bad looks lately).
Did they get atrocious weather or was this an Alameda Coliseum "septic tanks back up onto field" thing?

Apparently the mound is artificial turf and that's where the problem is. I didn't know that was a thing.

It does look like dirt. And Columbia's page for the stadium says it is. "The surface is a hybrid fiber, rubber and sand infill blend designed to have a more consistent feel. It covers both the infield and outfield, with the only dirt covering the mound and home plate."
That said, hard to believe they couldn't fix a dirt mound overnight.
On the other hand, Cornell's press release also says turf:
"Due to an issue with the turf pitching mound at Columbia University's Robertson Field at Satow Stadium..."
https://cornellbigred.com/news/2024/5/18/baseball-2024-ivy-league-tournament-schedule-update.aspx
Coach Boretti's baseball camp website (https://brettborettibaseball.totalcamps.com/Staff) says turf:
"A locker room upgrade was completed in the spring of 2019 and turf mounds were installed on the field and bullpens during an upgrade later that summer."
I can't get the stream on espn+ even though the game has started, has anyone gotten it?
Never mind, the game notes say no broadcast available, what an absolute mess

What a comeback win, Cornell 7 Penn 6. Down 6-1 going into the bottom of the 7th the Big Red scored 6 runs the bottom of 7th to go ahead and win.
Massive win, one of the next two and we're Ivy champs.

Anyone know how home/away works in this tournament? Up until now I assume the higher seed was the home team. Tomorrow Cornell could be higher or lower. Seems like Cornell should be the home team by being the only undefeated thus far.

Typically Cornell would be home as the winners of the winners bracket.

i don't think the problem was fixing the dirt. it sounds like something got under the turf and made the surface uneven/dangerous for the pitcher. the players probably pointed out out.

The few things I read online said the mound was turf. I was just speculating because Al said it looked like dirt in other pictures online. I don't think Columbia has updated the stadium page on their website in years.

That's what I assumed until I just looked at last years tournament. Penn was the 1 seed and won their first two games. They were the away team against #3 Princeton in the next game and won. Maybe they do that so if there is a second game the higher seed is the home team in that one rather than both (or being the away team in the second game). That makes sense to me right now but I'm also jet lagged so who knows.

Against Penn, again.
Wow congratulations to Cornell baseball and good luck tomorrow. I am a big fan of head coach Dan Pepicelli as my son attended his baseball camp years ago. He's a great coach and even better person. Go Big Red!!!
Hoping the bats stay hot. Our starting pitcher has an ERA of 9.10.::uhoh::
Maybe the plan is to make this a "bullpen" game, with a parade of pitchers going an inning or two each.
ERA can be misleading though.
3 runs in 3 innings is a 9 but not as devesting as 9 runs in 9 innings.
Quote from: upprdeckERA can be misleading though.

Umm. The only difference is the number of innings the pitcher is in the game for.
yes. but if you only pitch few inning era gets skewed fast
tough call in the dropped ball at the plate?
I take it no replay in this? as he was clearly out?
Gonna need another comeback today...by the way, this LiveStats layout is headache inducing--especially when the bases are loaded! (and as I'm typing this, Penn has scored again and it's 6-0.)

6-5 now. End 3.
Cornell has tied it, 6-6, top of the fourth (for some reason Cornell is the visiting team.)
Cornell has taken an 8-7 lead in the top of sixth.
8-7 Red. Top 6.
tough way to give up the lead on basically nothing from Penn
Much like they got the 6 run lead without hitting the ball hard
11-8 Penn 0n 3-run homer bottom 7th
Cornell loses 11-9. I feel bad for these kids (all of them, on both teams) that they have to play another game today, they must be exhausted. Let's hope the bats stay hot for Cornell in the final game later today, because it seems clear that the pitching won't!

I know nothing about our pitching staff, but given we had the luxury of a one-game cushion, I hope our pitching is set-up better for the 2nd game than Penn's staff, which had to use it's ace in relief in game one.
I would think its to make sure the top team is home on the finals
