Title: Cornell vs RPI, 2 March 2024
Post by: Trotsky on March 02, 2024, 06:36:23 PM
Based on Jason's comments in the pre-game, Schafer absolutely agrees with the harshest critics of last night's effort.  A bunch of changes in the lineup and quote If I could make more changes I would unquote.  Yikes.

Another quote from Mike: "I don't buy us using our illness as an excuse.  Yes, we have sick players, but we are failing in fundamentals like face offs and effort and that isn't sickness."

He's not a happy man right now.

How long have they been sick?  Feels a little late for that to still be a reason. My daughter just returned to campus and said before break there was a virus going round but still?

First mention was 3 weekends ago.  I assume it has been rotating, but Seger at least has played like he's a corpse for the last several games.  He's the leader of the team so I assume he's in real bad shape.

2-0 after 1, shots 12-7.  Colgate tied with Union 1-1 after 1.  Magic number of derp points w/ Gate is 3 to clinch 2nd.

Shot attempts 29-14, and 8-1 this period.  We're getting some good play development.  RPI is chasing us a lot and that is tiring.

It's not a double minor though since it wasn't one single act.  I thought it would be a 5x3 because it was two separate penalties.  The scenario of two separate penalties shouldn't result in differing loss of man power just because the separate penalties were committed by the same player.  I know it's not common but I don't recall seeing this ruling before.

I'm guessing that Bancroft learned a pretty important lesson today.  Luckily all that it cost them was a shutout.  I felt bad for him because he took it pretty hard.  I thought DeSantis was gonna get the monkey off his back with the empty net but the puck jumped on him.  Must be the book on the RPI goalie was wrap around.  They tried it all night.  Mack changed up the angle by going far side instead of going for the stuff attempt.  Rest up boys.  Almost time to flip the switch.

Fegaras, apparently. Mosko looked really solid (again) in his place on the blue line, and Schafer gave him some of Fegaras's PP time as well.

O'Brien was in the "7th D" role with Donaldson out.

Yes, he tried to elevate a pass out in front instead of putting the puck in the corner or taking it to the boards.  After he got back from the tunnel he had his head down.  He makes plenty of good plays in the defensive zone.  This was just a weird scenario where everyone was bunched down close to the goal line so there weren't any safe passing options.  Now if Psenicka knocks the puck down then only the coaching staff sees it as a risky play instead of everyone in the arena.

I don't know. I view Bancroft as somewhat defensively suspect, as I've noticed quite a few clears that he's made bad choices like that on, either passing to dangerous areas or not playing the puck with authority. Basically, he plays it a little too cute in the defensive end, and that's generally not a good choice.

That being said, if he took it that hard, it's clearly something he and the coaching staff are trying to address. As long as he keeps working at it, he'll get there. Which is the whole point of the intersection between Schafer's coaching emphasis and more offensively oriented players like Bancroft. You can teach defense. As long as he buys in, he'll become a complete player.
