From CHN (https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2024/01/01_NCAA-Tournament,-First-Look.php):
QuoteDenver also has had the injury bug lately. Top scorer Massimo Rizzo and high-end defenseman Sean Behrens both returned for the NCHC semis against Colorado College after missing some time. Goalie Magnus Chrona missed four games as well, returned against CC, then came out with 10 minutes remaining in the game, seemingly reinjuring himself, though that was denied by coach David Carle.
Obviously anything can happen in a hockey game, but I'm happy we didn't get Michigan. Colgate got Michigan, and with Michigan's elite offensive talent I just have a feeling that game is going to end up something like 5-1 UMich. Denver should at least be a lower scoring affair, though looking at their roster and season stats they too are completely loaded. With respect to Denver dealing with injuries, only goalie Chrona appears to be potentially hurt at the present moment; the others played Saturday night. Meanwhile, seems we have a number of our own players who are banged up or straight up unable to play (DeSantis, Mack, Donaldson?). Maybe some will be ready to go by Thursday. It's too bad we couldn't hang on to a three-seed as the two-seeds look far more beatable. Oh well, can't really complain.

Well, I think Q is the weakest #1, but we can't play them. I think we have decent odds against WMU or a banged up BU.
Winner gets BU.
Do we know if this game is on Espnews or just on Espn+?

Cornell's game is on ESPNews...I thought I got that channel but alas no.
I didn't watch the first game either but 5-1 is an impressive score. Still, I've wanted another shot at BU since the game against them earlier this year. Denver looks extremely good, too...if Cornell somehow wins both games I think it'll be the most impressive two game stretch of Cornell hockey I will have ever seen...er...watched the highlights of.
You can also watch it on the ESPN + app I'm sure

Thank you! My local has the channel so, I get to be 'that guy' in public, as opposed to at home.
Gotta admit, it looks pretty sweet on a large 4k TV. It's been a long trip since listening to a broadcast over a phone line hooked into a PBX.
For now, at least, my ESPN phone app thinks I want the ESPN news stream, not the ESPN+ stream. Guess it's radio for me til I can sort this out.
Just had to whine about it! Back on.

OK Denver is very aggressive on the kill. Maybe we can use that against them.

BERARD!!!!!

Quote from: TrotskyWay to stay with it Ben!!!
Awesome. ::burnout::
That was such a beautiful individual effort by Berard that when it didn't go in, the seive decided to skate out of the way for Ben so he could get the goal he deserved! So nice ;)
The lively boards behind goal make it feel like Lynah. Arena also has memories of Matt Moulson's years with the AHL Monarchs.
"When the Red Come Marching In" comes through loud and clear on the broadcast and is commented on by the announcers.
pp #2 coming up. Make it count.
We had a couple good set ups on the two pps but nothing truly special. Denver has large, healthy lads with spirit.
Great first period, now all we need to do is repeat it two more times. So easy.
O'Leary with the between period interview. He's even a little scrapper doing that. ::cheer::
Clear contact to the head. Should be 5.
Ouch.

5 but no 10 + Ejection. Huh.
Why no ejection?

I don't know. Maybe something about intent. Announcers went off about how max turned his head "late."
these announcers just called them the Broncos
To be fair, WMU just played and the Denver broncos actually exist lol
Dum dum move by Bancroft. Woof.
That was sooooo late. No head whipping to the side like the Denver major but wouldn't be surprised.
Lucky he wasn't sent.
Kill, Red, kill.
That doesn't get called a major in a universe where DU's major doesn't get called
First shot in 15 minutes is dead center and Shane stops it. Very solid.
GOALIE! SIEVE! GOALIE! SIEVE! GOALIE! SIEVE! GOALIE! SIEVE!
They're outhitting us, but they also haven't been able to sniff the crease until 90 seconds remaining in the major. Keep it up.
Ian Shane putting on a show
DeSantis nearly pots that one; just a skate save. Solid period. Do it again, please.
Denver clearly trying to up the tempo significantly in the last 3 minutes of the 2nd. If we're smart, we enforce our pace and let the Pios tire first.
Penalty shot.

BARKING WINS THIS TIME!!! LGR!!!
Not a perfect game, but we played the game we needed. Great job to topple the defending champs.
BU will require a big effort.
WOOOOOOO!
Yes, motherfucker.
Yes.
What time is the Saturday game?
We owned the boards and had sticks in the lane all night. If the gameplan was "like against Harvard but more aggressive" it seems like it was executed really well.
Now I need to look at flights to Boston.
My god, Shane talks just like Spicoli.

Anyone else think the announcers didn't know how to pronounce Psenicka so they didn't try?

Correct. This is one of the quirks of the NCAA rulebook.
Given the way the PP looked I'd rather take the penalty and try to end the game at 3-0

Definitely take the penalty shot there. DeSantis is one of the most skilled players on the team.

It wasn't unreasonable to go for it given DeSantis's skills in that spot. I just thought that Chrona would be tough to beat and it was getting to be time to use the clock to our advantage. Thankfully this is a hypothetical discussion. Let's go Red!!!!!!
Quote from: DafatoneAnyone else think the announcers didn't know how to pronounce Psenicka so they didn't try?
Judging by their call of the game, I don't think they spent the bulk of their prep time researching *us*. I'm not saying they were Denver homers, but they were clearly surprised at the result. Even after 1.
During Shane's interview they said it was the seventh game in a row with 1 goal or fewer scored against Cornell- first in PROGRAM a HISTORY.
That really surprised me.

Yeah, I thought they should have taken the minor, because even if you don't score on the PP, you've taken two more minutes off the clock.

Huh. I did not know that.
Got back from a charity dinner and finally was able to watch the game. Far better performance than against Harvard, and getting that early lead was obviously huge. I was surprised how passive DU was for most of the game, as teams that forecheck us hard and jam up the neutral zone have given us the biggest problems. Shane looks super confident, and we'll need the best version of him on Saturday.

Desantis had 4 or 5 point blank opportunities where he either whiffed, couldn't get good wood on it or had bad puck luck with the puck bouncing over his stick. On better ice we could easily have had 5 or 6.

One other thing that stood out to me last night was how much better we were than at LP last weekend at winning the one-on-one puck battles along the boards and using active sticks to break up passes and disrupt Denver's flow. Played to our strengths perfectly.

We won so many battles -- in the corner, against the boards, to the puck, at the dot. We "wanted it more." It was so satisfying seeing us play with all that heart. Just keep it up.

My feelings exactly. Game articles didn't seem to capture that.
In my opinion, the biggest reason Cornell won was that they played incredible defense with their sticks. They gave Denver almost no shooting or passing lanes below the blue line the entire game. And Cornell used its size to win battles on the boards. One advantage Cornell should have against these young teams with elite skill is that Cornell is bigger and stronger. I am worried that there won't be as many struggles on the boards against BU, which will try to strike more quickly in transition.
People are gonna keep talking about our defense, and rightly so, but what struck me was how many times we were just plain old faster on puck races.

QuoteThe Big Red came out aggressive, flying, winning battles to loose picks, and putting its textbook forecheck to work. All the while, they frustrated Denver, the defending national champs. Which is not to say, of course, that they neglected the defensive end, obviously. They shut out one of the top scoring teams in the country. At one point Cornell held the Pioneers without a shot for 15 minutes.
