So I was more than surprised to flip my TV to espn2 just as they were talking about....Dartmouth hockey? Jessiman just went #12 overall by a team that's talked about way too much on this board. :-P
Ithaca native Dustin Brown followed him at #13 by the Kings. The commentators talked about him being part of a "new trend" of US born players going to the Canadian Juniors, and then said "Native of Ithaca? How did Cornell University not get him??"
Vanek went #5 to the Sabres.
Now I have one more reason to hate Jessiman.
JH
I checked my watch, and it appears that it is time for Jessiman to start sucking.
#1 overall was Marc-Andre Fleury, the guy who started ahead of Lenny on the Canadian WJC team.

Thomas Vanek (Minnesota '06), 5th overall, Buffalo Sabres

Shane Hynes to Anaheim with the 86th pick.
JH
Also O'Byrne to Montreal, 79th.
Third Round:
75 New York Rangers, Ken Roche, C (I) Boston University (HEA)
78 Minnesota Wild, Danny Irmen, C (I) Minnesota (WCHA)
79 Montreal Canadiens, Ryan O'Byrne, D (I) Cornell (ECAC)
83 Washington Capitals, Stephen Werner, RW Massachusetts (HEA)
86 Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Shane Hynes, RW Cornell (ECAC)
87 Philadelphia Flyers, Ryan Potulny, C (I) Minnesota (WCHA)
While it would've been awesome to have Dustin Brown play for Cornell, I think a lot of people forget that the moment he agreed to play Canadian Juniors -- i.e. three years ago, when he was 15 -- he lost the eligibility to play for any college team. It's not like there was some huge recruiting coup and Cornell lost him to another NCAA team; instead, he made an active decision to do what would help him develop his skills to the fullest extent possible. As much as I would have loved to see him in a Cornell jersey, I think it's hard to argue against his decision given the results of the draft.
Late 3rd-round NCAA picks:
Juha Allen (Northern Michigan '06), 90th overall, Anaheim Mighty Ducks
Matt Nickerson (Michigan '07), 99th overall, Dallas Stars
I'm just thinking....Murray (and Mark McRae, wasn't he?) was an 8th round pick, and O'Byrne is a 3rd round pick. If O'Byrne ends up better than Murray and McRae by the end of college....we've got a damn good defensemen on our hands.
What does (I) mean?
(I) means "incoming", as in "incoming NCAA player".
Unless he pulls a Niewendyk and opts out early.
The Bruins picked Byron Bitz in the fourth round, and the Avalanche picked Mark McCutcheon in the fifth.

Wow...we've got an amazing incoming class, it seems. Have we ever had 3 incoming players drafted in round 5 or higher? (4 total) Most of our incoming guys end up getting drafted in the later rounds. (at least, in recent memory)
Matt Moulson goes to Pittsburgh in the 9th round.
As a quick visit to http://www.spiritone.com/~kepler/players/cornellNHLDraft.html will show, we have never had 3 incoming players drafted before - in any rounds! The five draft picks this year are the 3rd most in any draft year, behind the amazing years of 89 and 90, when 6 players were drafted each year.
In 1990, three of the guys were in the supplemental draft. Of the nine from that era in the regular draft, the average draft position was 91; for the five this year, the average was 136. The 90-91 team had 13 draft picks (10 "numbered," including Corrie D'Alessio from '88, average = 93); next year, we'll have only 7 - this year's 5 plus Glover and Lenny, combined average = 140.
What does all that mean? Absolutely nothing. We've got the same players showing up this fall that we did on Friday. Work hard this summer, boys - the rewards will come in March.
double post -- sorry

A thread on the BCHL board about Ryan O'Byrne being drafted. (Be aware that this board has a lot of pop-up ads.) http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/thread?forumid=146929&messageid=1056269209&lp=1056317235
One guy on that thread rips O'Byrne for being soft. I think Schafer will help him toughen up!
I know Cornell has a history with recruiting western Canadian players...does anyone know if there are any particular connections/reasons why the Rangers have been going after (seemingly) a lot of Ivy players (besides the education)?
Cool...Moulson to Pittsburgh. Go Pens :)
Here's an article that has a little bit about Mark McCutcheon, with comments from his father.

[Q]...why the Rangers have been going after (seemingly) a lot of Ivy players (besides the education)?[/Q]
How many draft picks have they spent on Ivy players? (I know of the two this year and Dominic Moore -- any others?)
those were the three that I was thinking of...I put the "seemingly" in there because it seemed like a lot to me but maybe not to others. It may just be a result of Ivy hockey becoming a dominant force in the ECAC...

Don't get too excited about that; these things ebb and flow. Just remember it in a few years when either fluctuations or the swing of the pendulum reverses the situation and some Clarkson/SLU/UVM/RPI fan starts mouthing off about how the Ivies (especially Brom and Darmouth :-P) are dragging the rest of the ECAC down.

Especially since this year, Brom's and Darmouth's schedules have many games against Anybody, but few against Nobody and Cupcake.
John, how could you not have noticed this:
179 NY Rangers Philippe Furrer D Bern (SUI)
Heh... Perfect for the Swiss Cheese defense that the Rangers are known for!!! ::nut::

Hopp SCB!
Of course, since he's a youngster, he wasn't playing three years ago when I was last there.
Apparently the Swiss national team's goalie in the recent world championship plays for Bern as well. I was there for the second-to-last and penultimate seasons of beloved veteran Renato Tosio, so again, after my time.
I miss having a hockey team play ten minutes' walk from my apartment. :-/

Are you kidding? He'll block the opponents up like a fondue! :-}
A quick NCAA draft breakdown from hockeysfuture.com...
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/article.php?sid=6084&mode=threaded&order=0
They listed Cornell as a "Notable school" stating, "5 players were chosen from Cornell -- their Cinderella season caught the eye of many scouts."
[Q]5 players were chosen from Cornell -- their Cinderella season caught the eye of many scouts.[/Q]
Well, that's really annoying. I would hardly consider our season a "Cinderella story". It's not like Union or Princeton made it to the FF. Besides, I hardly think Hynes, O'Byrne, etc. were drafted because of this season's finish (esp. not the incoming guys). Not that this surprises me much, but I felt the need to vent.

The author of the article is from Denver, and apparently follows DU.
Once more we see the WCHA bias against the ECAC. :-( :-(

If we're Cinderella, does that make Harvard an ugly sister?
I think they're the rats that got changed into coachmen by the fairy godmother.

I think that you are overreacting a little, Keith. To those who weren't paying attention, I'm sure that it seemed like a Cinderella season. I also don't think we are reading the scribblings of a writer that has spent a lot of time at workshops hoping to improve his craft.
Sure, 01-02 should have given the rest of the country a clue as to what 02-03 would be like, but I think Cornell exceeded everyone's preseason expectations - even ours. (I think by tournament time, everyone here was convinced that Cornell could win the whole thing, so the UNH loss was still a disappointment.)
Here's an indication of what some of us had for expectations going into the year (kind of interesting to read now):
http://elf.hockey.cornell.edu/read.php?f=1&i=8098&t=8092
Of course I'm over-reacting a little. Thus the need to vent. :-) I don't think Cinderella is a fair description for Cornell if you were paying attention. But the writer probably wasn't paying attention - that's the point. I didn't lose any sleep over the description. I just couldn't resist the urge to complain about it.
I think the so called "experts" view any ECAC FF team as a "Cinderella" story....the same was said about St. Lawrence a few years ago...e.g., ad nauseum by Jack Edwards on ESPN with his references to "tiny" and "little" SLU taking on "mighty" Boston College.
It's not gonna stop until an ECAC team wins it all....if then!
"Cinderella" is a little unfair, I think, but "Fairy Tale" would certainly apply - just a slight difference in connotation.
