Dear Big Red Athletics Community,
After conducting a comprehensive nationwide search, I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Nicki Moore as the new Meakem Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education beginning on January 17, 2023.
Moore comes to Cornell from Colgate University where she has served as Vice President and Director of Athletics since 2018. Under her leadership, Colgate teams achieved 11 league championships and four postseason wins in NCAA competition, reached record levels of student-athlete academic success, and in 2022, Moore was named the Nike FCS Executive of the Year.
Serving on the President's Cabinet at Colgate, Moore has contributed to the university's overall strategic and operational decision-making, including leading an athletics program assessment that yielded a comprehensive athletics strategic plan. The department has also made strides to advance diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives through their Plan to Build an Inclusive Community. On a national level, Nicki serves as the FCS Representative to the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA) Board of Directors and as the Past President of the Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association (FCS-ADA).
Prior to Colgate, Moore served as a Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Oklahoma. Through these roles, Moore spearheaded initiatives to garner greater program support, enrich the student-athlete experience, and inspire coach and staff engagement. Between her combined experiences at UNC and OU, she has been a part of seven national championships and 33 ACC/Big 12 conference titles.
Earning a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology along with a M.A. and B.S. Ed. from the University of Missouri, Moore brings a strong commitment to the advancement of student-athlete mental health at both the local and national levels. A former Division I student-athlete herself, Moore understands the tremendous dedication and commitment it takes to be successful on and off the playing surface. As a member of the track and field and cross country teams, she was the inaugural SAAC president for two years and a three-time conference champion, qualified twice for the NCAA Championships and earned silver medals in the 800m at the USA Outdoor Junior Nationals and the Jr. Pan-American Games. An Academic All-American, she also earned postgraduate scholarships from both the NCAA and the Big 12 Conference.
Moore is an inclusive, collaborative, and results-driven leader with vast experience in strategic planning, fundraising and development, sport administration and student development. She is known to be an inspiring visionary who is committed to the success of student-athletes in all facets of their collegiate careers. I look forward to seeing all she does to build upon Cornell's rich tradition of intercollegiate athletic excellence and amplify the tremendous impact that a robust athletics and physical education program has on the academic and personal growth of all students.

My son is a junior at Colgate, so I've been following their programs since he enrolled. On a Colgate sports forum where just a few folks post regularly, most are not big fans of Moore, primarily due to the decline in their football program. Last year their longtime coach Dan Hunt "resigned" under mysterious circumstances, and Moore immediately named Stan Dakosty, a Colgate grad and assistant coach, as the new head coach. The Colgate alumns are still disappointed a national search wasn't conducted since their football program, which traditionally been a powerhouse, has continued to struggle. Some of the Colgate folks are also impatiently waiting for Don Vaughn to get the boot, and are frustrated Moore has kept him around.
Colgate's women's sports seem to have improved under Moore's watch, and last year she hired a new women's basketball coach who seems to be very good. With the exception of hockey and lacrosse, many of our women's teams have fallen towards the bottom of the Ivy League and some changes there would be welcome.

Happy to report that she actually did wind up her remarks by saying, "Let's -- Go -- Red!"
Personally, if she had just stopped there, I would have liked it better. As stated above, she did then kind of force the issue, and got a "Let's Go Red" cheer going.
