"Let's shoot craps."
No, wait. When is the game?
Let's go Big Red, beat the #12 Ohio State University Buckeyes! Game time, Sunday May 15th @ 2:30. ESPNU
I think Georgetown is beatable if we make it past OSU. Always hate having to beat a team twice in a season, but have been encouraged by how we played against Princeton and Yale. Still stand by what I said several weeks ago that the ceiling of this team changed pretty significantly with Blake's injury. Would love to see this team with a healthy Blake and Lombardi
Buck the Fuckeyes!
Screw BU. Princeton, too, actually, but Ivy League is off to a good start in the tournament.

Well designed and executed play out of the time out. They must have spotted some tendencies. The skip pass drew three defenders, including the crease attack defender, leaving a shooter in front of the crease wide open.

Handley played a key role. He took the first pass from the TO, which brought a slide and double-team. Obviously, Richmond was afraid he was the primary scorer in Penn's plan. But instead of taking a shot, he quickly passed over to the right wing (jersey #?), who quickly passed to a forward occupying the space opened up by the slide. From there Penn was just a quick stick away from advancing. Very well done, Penn!

Stop the ball, Yale Bulldogs. At least make him make a pass.

#10 for Yale must be tired. That was some pretty dreadful defense.
3-0 tournament start for the Ivy League.
Since I live nearby, I went to Yale game. Yale was lucky to advance. They won mainly because their goalie had a better game than the St. Joe's goalie. Otherwise, neither team's defense was impressive. The St. Joe's faceoff specialist is one of the best in the country, and that helped keep them in the game. The key play came in the third quarter when St. Joe's had a two-goal lead, won the faceoff, but then had a long stick middie take an ill-advised, long-range shot before St. Joe's could start running its offense. The Yale goalie made an easy save and that led to a Yale transition goal. Instead of a potential three-goal lead for St. Joe's, it was now a one-goal game.

Fuck Duke.
Ivy League goes 3-1 on day one. Tough draw for Brown--I do not relish facing Ohio State a second time this season but I think that's preferable to playing Virginia.
Yesterday I rooted for all of the home teams--today (with one huge, obvious exception) I will root for all of the road teams.

Weather delay in Ithaca
Anyone have any idea how long the weather delay is projected to last?
i dont think its doing anything in ithaca now.. its just they think it has the chance to and didnt want to start and stop.
My friend, whose son is in attendance, believes it was lightning.
There's some old New Haven trash on my teevee.

ESPNU has it up now.
Buncha WASPs gonna be missing teeth if this keeps up.
Where's the slide?
Offense getting poor shots. Inacio has won both faceoffs easily to himself. 0-2
Suboptimal.
Now 0-4 on a 70 yard goal.
Where's the intensity from the game at Princeton?

We need to find offense somewhere.

Problem is no offense from midfield. Just pack it in against attack.
Could have had a Donville Blake Lombardi Kelleher midfield but stuff happened.

It looks like CJ and Piatelli are going to put the d-man on their back and head to the goal. That may yield some goals eventually. When we are man up, everyone is in motion to get open for a pass. Not in our standard offense. If feels like we're doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Billy Coyle tried to invert and to go the cage twice. No luck so far.
We have too many long scoring droughts for a team with such a good offense.
Delay due to a lightning strike for at least 1/2 hour.
Licciardi has beat his man twice going down the alley and didn't take the shot. He should be encouraged to take it to the hole.

What would've happened if her son went to Duke?
The reasons for Ben's departure were not that simple. Andy Noel did not blame it on his handling of the hazing/partying incident. There was something else at issue that has never been publicly disclosed although there has been a tremendous amount of speculation over the years. We may never know what actually prompted his termination since the parties have no reason to share the details with us. And although I have always been really curious, I also acknowledge that I don't really have any right to know.

Awesome win yesterday. The lack of coverage and support on campus for the lacrosse team is nuts given how successful the program is. The Sun barely covers lax, still having published nothing on yesterday's game. The crowds are sparse. There is no highlight package up. Even when highlights go up, it's usually just a subset of the Cornell goals, with no opposing goals or other big moments. And the replays start just a second or two before each goal, so there is never any view into how the plays develop. Even the official Cornell lacrosse social media pages often do not list the final score of the games or post highlights. Neither the official team Instagram page nor the team Twitter account has posted the final from yesterday's game (the Twitter account later retweeted an article about the game, which happens to list the final score). The team Facebook page hasn't been updated since October 2020. I don't know who manages these things, but I would hope there is enough interest in the lacrosse team to at least demand score updates, highlights of all the goals, and an article the next day in the school paper that covers the biggest game of the year.
Final exams are underway, including tests scheduled for this past weekend. I suspect this had a lot to do with attendance and Cornell media coverage. And the weather sucked. Why go out in the rain, thunder and lightning when you have ESPN?
The Sun barely covers any Cornell athletics team other than men's hockey, especially when they are not "publishing." The Sun only "publishes" when classes are in session, a holdover from the pre-Internet days. It drives me nuts that a reporter and an editor can't manage to get it together to write, edit and post even bare-bones stories about athletic events other than men's hockey. The Internet is supposed to boost media coverage, not subvert it.
As for Athletics, let's cut them some slack. There are only a handful of media people on the staff and they have families. The game was scheduled on May 8 to be played in Ithaca on Sunday, May 15. It was delayed for several hours due to weather to further complicate media activiy and they did get a story up last night. The game was televised by ESPN which might impact access [and rights?] to posting highlights and archiving the complete game. Chayse's goal was posted on Twitter pretty quickly for our amazement and delight.

How does Ierlan get credit for a goal? It looks like it went it in off of the stick of Piatelli. Shouldn't he get the goal, with an assist to Ierlan? Not that I would want that, because a goalie goal is really cool, and a much better look for Cornell than what Blaze Riordan did to us a few years ago.
If you look at the video of Ierlan's goal, Piatelli and the goalie both jump for the ball and it is redirected into the net. Apparently it hit the goalie stick rather than John's; hence the goalie goal.
Re video, as I understand it the NCAA retains rights to all video of championship games, it's not available for schools to clip and post highlights.

Massey gives Cornell a 63% probability of beating Delaware, vs what would have been 30% against Georgetown.
Reminds me of 2010, when Cornell was the #7 seed. Needed triple OT to beat Loyola in the first round, and was set to go against #2 Cuse (who had beaten Cornell 8-7 at Schoellkopf in the regular season), but Cuse was upset by Army in OT. Cornell then crushed Army 14-5 to reach the final four. (Only to lose to unseeded Notre Dame in the semis, 12-7, but we do not speak of that.)

Delaware is an excellent team, especially on the defense. This is a small sample size (I watched one game against GTown), but here is what I saw. Cornell will have to work hard for goals. Delaware kept a high-powered GTown to 9 goals, Penn to 8 (earlier this year), and Princeton to 10. They play disciplined lacrosse and they time their slides extremely well, as one would expect from a DeLuca defense. Their long poles are skilled. They will pick your pocket and take away the ball, esp. a guy named Owen Grant. And they don't make a lot of mistakes.
The offense is also very good but not as strong as their D. They often play a box-style, Canadian offense, with a lot of interior passing and good cuts to the goal, especially down the alley with a feed from the X. One of their attacks also likes to drift to the backdoor when the ball's on the perimeter. One of their attacks, Robinson (Ontario), will stick a shot in the corner with a left-handed behind-the-back shot, French pastry, as Barry says. They have a midfielder, Bieda, who shoots hard and accurately from outside. They have effective distributors from X. I'll be interested to see who Adler shuts down this game. I'm guessing Robinson.
Their goalie played a great game. He had a lot of great stops and didn't make mistakes on the clears. Their FOFO did not win a lot of draws, but their wing play is outstanding, so Delaware ended up with several possessions off the draw anyway.
I'm not any good at predicting wins and losses, so I won't try. This is clearly a team that Cornell can beat, but Delaware was incredibly impressive in their win against GTown.

Quote from: CU77Re video, as I understand it the NCAA retains rights to all video of championship games, it's not available for schools to clip and post highlights.
Some might argue the NCAA serves at the will of its member colleges and universities. They used to be arrogant pricks. In the last couple years as things went against the NCAA, the arrogance part has lessened, if not quite to the level of Gandhi's "these are my people, I am their leader, I must follow them."
If the NCAA really bans clips for the teams to post on their websites, then the action video becomes fan clips on social media. The NCAA going back at least a decade has tried to ban fan use of "professional type cameras" which is subject to considerable leeway on the parts of stadium ushers. Although I once got in the 300mm f/2.8, which is about the size of a Javelin launcher. And I was told at another lax tournament event to take a 3-inch-long mini zoom back to car.
More than a decade ago, in the early days of blogging, the NCAA would threaten to evict journalists from the pressbox for live-blogging. That ended at a regional NCAA baseball event in some mid-market city like Scranton or Louisville. The NCAA evicted the local paper, which had been up to then a booster for the games, or told them not to come back for the next day's games. The paper shut down all coverage, even the agate type scores. The NCAA relented a day later. They've made their peace with the media and even come to understand that social media and live-blogging
increases interest in the sport.
Jason Gay of the Wall Street Journal, was told in 2014 to lose his non-NCAA-sanctioned cat mug from the NCAA basketball press table. The only cups allowed are the ones with the name of the "official hydration beverage of the NCAA." Gay turned it into a column: https://www.wsj.com/articles/jason-gay-the-ncaa-took-away-my-cat-mug-1396306274
Quote from: Jason Gay, WSJLike other people in the media, I have been amused for a while at a strictly enforced NCAA policy regarding cups. As in paper cups. The NCAA forbids outside cups at tournament games. It requests that beverages are consumed in official NCAA cups with a logo of a Prominent Hydration Drink. It takes this rule seriously; there are a lot of jokes about the Cup Police, and at the floor-level entrances to the court there are signs in capital letters that remind you of this rule. ONLY NCAA CUPS ALLOWED BEYOND THIS POINT, the sign reads. Next to the sign, there's a stack of NCAA cups with the Prominent Hydration Drink logo, ready for your obedient use.

Syracuse, Army and Lehigh all rated above us (pre-season) underperformed Cornell; look how low (lower than Cornell) Princeton was rated and Ohio State was in the also-mentioned category. I think Virginia was #1 only in the pre-season, then #2 Maryland took over.
In Cornell's favor, an 80-1 took the Kentucky Derby.
You know DeLuca wants this one bad. His players probably want it for him too. We're going to have to be ready.
I don't know about getting 'helped' so much by Delaware. Georgetown deservedly was highly rated because they had only one loss, but they went 1-1 vs Princeton and Penn, just like Cornell, and Richmond was the only other tournament team they played. They did not blow any games against bubble teams (like Cornell did vs Army), but I think both Georgetown and Rutgers may well be overrated.
Delaware looked very good, with a really solid defense. I am not convinced they will be an easier opponent than Georgetown would have been.

The article got one fact wrong: Ben DeLuca was a biochem and nutrition major, not a business major. But this demonstrates another benefit of a Cornell education -- access to a vast network of alumni who can help you get a job on Wall St. if you want one.

Hmmph. I thought DeLuca was trading on the trademark of his old not current school. But I suppose "voted best party on the Northeastern Seaboard" doesn't have the same ring.
I think Ben DeLuca has just as much right as Connor Buczek or any other Cornell lax player to quote Richie Moran. After all, he played for the guy, he coached at Cornell for several years, including his stint as head coach, and he interacted with Moran on a regular basis during their years at Cornell. In his interviews he has always given Richie credit for shaping his coaching philosophy. Now if Jeff Tambroni led off a post-season press conference with the comment, that would be different.

Completely agree. His team just lost to Cornell, yet he paid homage to a legendary Cornell coach who had just passed away.
In an interview before the game he had been asked what it felt like to be playing against his alma mater. He said something like, "I love Cornell, and I love Cornell lacrosse. I always will. Coach Moran changed my life: I went to Cornell, got a great education, and became a lacrosse coach. But this game isn't about me."
DeLuca got shafted at Cornell, perhaps deservedly so. But he's spent his time in purgatory, and now he's building a very good program in Delaware. It's hard to imagine he hasn't learned some lessons from all this. He didn't have to say anything about Cornell, the university, or RM. But he chose to open with this.
Time to cut him some slack.
I also agree.
Now time to beat Rutgers!
Rentschler background info says "grass field."
Info lacking on which side of the field or which sections are Cornell for Saturday. Also which is the parking area for the Cornell-sponsored (BYO food) tailgate.
Rentschler buy-tickets landing page suggests majority of sections have limited or no availability. Hard to believe it's close to sellout. In the years of 40K+ attendance in Baltimore or Philadelphia, the quarterfinal sites often drew 10,000-plus). Semifinal attendance at Hofstra was announced as 5814 (Shuart Stadium capacity is 11,929 and in previous year, pre-Covid, mid-teens, it was close to sold out), at Columbus 3684 (Ohio Stadium capacty is 104,944).

Who's going to the NCAA lacrosse finals weekend?
We are in Lake Placid for the Memorial Day weekend. Plans are to watch the Saturday at WiseGuys, the sports 100 yards downhill from LP Miracle on Ice Rink. If Cornell advances, I'm going +3 (3-1/2 hour drive). From about age 40 onward, it's become clearer and clearer: If Cornell makes the finals, go! You might not live long enough to see the next one. Plus I saw 1971, 1976, 1977.

No quotes needed. The Rent often hosts US National Soccer games, both Men's and Women's teams. It should still be grass. Never mind Pine Tree Road, imagine if you had to drive 30 minutes on an interstate to go to sporting events like UConn students do.
This is bizarre for me. I worked for 13 years (leaving in 2018) in a crumbling office park less than 3 miles away (so not Pratt & Whitney) from Rentschler. I could bike to the stadium in about 20 minutes from my home across the river. It was always a better choice for me to bike since the car traffic access in and out of the former airfield is so horribly mismanaged. Be prepared to sit around in your idling car as everyone is funneled into 1 or 2 entrance/exits depending on what highway you're coming from. Heck, just plan for a post-game tailgate while the lots empty. I was once leaving a concert and listened to an entire hockey period before getting out of the parking lots.
While I'm still undecided about going, I could provide any info about the area if anyone wants. I love Hartford like a 2nd home (yes, seriously), but most people here would feel most comfortable in the posh shopping/dining area of West Hartford Center, or for a more "New Englandy" feel, go to Glastonbury or Old Wethersfield. Nearby Manchester has all the chains (hotels, malls, big boxes) you might want. Just don't say you're "in Hartford" unless you're actually in Hartford city limits. The old racist tropes and donut effect is strong there. People "west of the river" tend to shit on the towns "east of the river" for some reason, but just wear any Whalers gear and you'll likely make friends. I'd like to say the area around the stadium and the city of East Hartford in general has anything very worthwhile, but it really doesn't, and that's too bad since that's what most fans visiting for the first time will take away. Other than the stadium there's a huge Cabella's plopped in the old airfield, and that's about it besides the stark Pratt & Whitney (now part of Raytheon) campus.

I figured out what's going on with ticket availability, I think. The site seems to be showing very different availability depending on which link you click to get to it. There are also tons of tickets available on the usual resale sites, so I'm curious to see what the actual attendance is. The traffic on 84 from West Hartford through Hartford can be a slog, though I'm not sure if the holiday weekend would mean this is lighter or heavier than usual.
The Wadsworrh Art Museum in Hartford is quite good (and the art museum in New Britain is decent as well). If you're a basketball fan, it's a short trip up to the Hall of Fame in Springfield. I haven't lived in the area for many years, but there's enough to keep you occupied on Sunday if you're staying for the weekend.

Oh, yeah, the lower cost seats are $26. Plus $13 handling fees. Where's an attorney general when you need them?
I just went onto the ticket sales page and there are still a crap-load of seats in the upper deck. Plenty of seats behind the goals, too. Monday looks similar.
I'm driving up Saturday morning and staying with family in suburban Boston for the weekend. If we win Saturday, I'll buy a Monday ticket then, and go to Monday's game on the way home.
I figured out what's going on with ticket availability, I think. The site seems to be showing very different availability depending on which link you click to get to it. There must be something going on in the parameters of the first URL that is filtering out available seats for some reason. There are also tons of tickets available on the usual resale sites, so I'm curious to see what the actual attendance is. (According to the Cornell ticket site (https://cornellbigredtickets.universitytickets.com/w/CustomPageView.aspx?pageID=6), the official Cornell section is 102.)
I just bought a couple of seats in Section 202 in the deck above the Cornell section. Section 202 is close to sold out, but the adjacent sections have plenty of seats.
I'm in 203.
But from what I remember about these things, because there are four teams playing, the stadium will have plenty of seats available for people who won't show up until the second game. So I may try to sit in the lower bowl for our game.

I agree with that for football. Sometimes I even like the upper deck for hockey - upper deck behind the net is a great spot to sit.
I've only watched one lax game from the upper deck. I don't remember much of the game. I just remember frying.

At one of the first round NCAA hockey tournaments in Worcester or Springfield, I sat high in the stands over one of the corners of the rink. Behind me was one of the great Meagher brothers from BU, scouting for an NHL team. He said it was the best place from which to see the game. Enjoyed some useful commentary on the game, too.
Lacrosse seats are in many ways similar to football. If you like to watch a play develop and understand the importance of all ball movement a seat in the second tier is a great perspective. Unlike hockey sitting behind the net in lacrosse is not a great vantage point (IMO) as you are typically too far from the field to appreciate the play on the near side of the field.
I'm about to start a flight that doesn't appear to support streaming (thanks United). What's a good website to keep up with scores as the game progresses? Fanlax or something like that? Or here?
I'm sure there will be some running commentary on fanlax and here. To keep up to date on the score, the inside lacrosse scoreboard page usually has a pretty barebones box score page that should be reasonably in sync with the game.
Hard to tell who has the most fans there since the colors are damn close.

anyone seen an update on when it'll restart?
Watching Cornell-Rutgers from Wiseguys, the mega sports bar a block downhill from the Lake Placid hockey complex. Sort of wishing I was there ... until this loooong delay. We feared Wiseguys would be packed with Memorial Day weekend, threatening weather, NHL on TV also NCAA softball and lax. Nope, when we talked in, we were the only customers.
In person Monday for sure, presuming no SF collapse ~ Cornell-Wisconson hockey collpase. Up 5-2 early in the third, lost OT 6-5.

Me, I think this is a kumbaya moment and we should even feel sorry for our brothers and sisters of Old Nassau.
Also, looks like RichH's Thread of Destiny subject line is no longer woofing. Remember it was Quint who posited before the playoffs began that Cornell was not a team capable of a "deep run" in the playoffs. We crossed that bar making the final four.
I am so looking forward to Monday.

I never thought he was blatantly anti-Cornell. Am I oblivious?
I think Quint is a pretty decent analyst and never found him anti-Cornell (He backstopped the Hopkins championship over Cornell in 1987). Anish is a little too pro Syracuse and Carc tends to go over the top in overpraising some players is my assessment Ryan Boyle is a much better analyst and IMO the key to being a good analyst is never to refer back "When I played". Hoping for best tomorrow and looking to Piatelli to break Mike French's record. Also a shout out to Christian Swezey's book "We Showed Baltimore". Excellent book for any lacrosse fan no matter where you attended school.
"looking to Piatelli to break Mike French's record."
Only want to see him win a title like French did. I dc if he has 10 assists with zero goals. I'm sure he feels the same way.
Interesting that the two finalists met in a fall ball scrimmage at Delbarton this past October. Who'd have thought they'd next meet on Memorial Day. Reports on the scrimmage can be found on this page of the Cornell 2022 thread at the fanlax forum: https://fanlax.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2950&start=100
Oddsmakers have Maryland as 7.5 goal favorites over Cornell. I'm no gambler but that's a tempting line to take Cornell to cover.
Though I am wearing my carnelian-colored glasses, I would be pretty surprised if we did not cover 7.5 goals.
Do we assume Cornell will be in the same sections of the stadium on Monday? If so, what were they? I'm planning on buying tickets at the stadium to save on the exorbitant fees.

The hybrid undergrad/alumni band (spanning the classes of '75-'25) will be in 129 if that helps. I don't get the sense there was much attention being paid to where people were sitting Saturday vs what the tickets said either.
I came across this earlier today which seemed to suggest the Cornell ticket allotment is for Section 123, so generally that part of the stadium: https://cornellbigredtickets.universitytickets.com/w/CustomPageView.aspx?pageID=6

They've fallen right into our trap.
Down 9-3 after 3. We've had chances, hit 3 pipes, but MD's defense and goaltending has been superb. Our defense has been more than good enough to win most games.
5-9 with 8:06 left. Cmooooooon......
Almost.
Just fell short, but too big a hole ultimately. The Cornell defense was outstanding, especially after the 1st quarter. We hit 3 pipes, and McEnaney was terrific, although their D forced us into a lot of tough shots. But what a ride for this team, and we acquitted ourselves so well against a team people have been calling the best of all time.
Sad. If the game goes another quarter, Cornell wins.
Congrats on a great season despite many tough circumstances. Congrats to cornell alums involved with this year's maryland team.
Amazing season, thank you players and coaches! Playing on Memorial Day was an accomplishment few of us fans would have believed possible four months ago.
Ran into one of the all-time great teams in the final, came within 2 goals. We could not have asked for more from these men.

Great Effort and am Very proud of this team. I will just say McNaney the Maryland Goalie reminded me of Dan Mackesey who was such a quick and mobile Goalie on those Cornell teams in 1976 and 1977.

4 pipes! The Piatelli no goal would have counted if it went straight in instead of ricocheting off of McNaney's butt.
Incredible first 10, incredible last 20. When Maryland got the offense clicking it was terrifying and McNaney was near-impenetrable. I don't know what we could have done better that seemed achievable. Heck of a run to close out the year. LGR.

The coaching staff did an unfathomably good job. I don't understand how this was even possible after the last two years.
That said, the transfer portal (in conjunction with the blanket fifth year of eligibility) is more garbage that we are going to have to contend with going forward. A first-team all-American midfielder graduates from Cornell. Next year, he and his sixth-year senior teammates score enough goals to make the difference against Cornell in the championship game. How much sense would that have made to anybody five years ago?

I don't know how the NC$$ determines Coach of the Year. But it's hard to imagine anyone but Buczek and his staff deserving it more. Tillman did a great job, but he had a loaded deck. Buczek, OTOH, drew an inside straight.
I felt sorry for the Cornell pep band at the game. They barely got a chance to be heard over the too-loud stadium sound system. Since this was a college championship game you would think the NCAA would give a pep band from one of the participating schools a chance to be heard at least a few times during the game. But sitting across the field from the pep band, I wouldn't have known they were there if I hadn't seen them preparing to go to their seats.

The loss stings but there is a lot of positives to take away.
1. The team made what is probably one of the best every Lax teams play a full 4 quarters to win.
2. The defense was epic. They held a great offense to 9 points. They forced a lot of turnovers and were tenacious on ground balls
3. The offense did not fold and made a great run at the end.
4. Nobody expected us or the other Ivy's to run deep into the season.
5. I suspect that it will be a lot easier to recruit in the near future. I am going to guess that playing for Coach Buczek will be a draw given what he has done. He is only 10 or so years older than the 18+ year old players he is recruiting and had the credentials that will impress.
Thanks to all the seniors for a great year! LGR
A great season, and something to build on.
May hockey now follow with a title game appearance.
Congratulations to both teams. What an amazing effort by Cornell. That showed a lot of guts and the graduating seniors, who contributed so much to this program, should absolutely walk away with their heads held high. While it's tough to come up just short, this feels better than the last time Cornell was in the championship game.
The future of Cornell lacrosse looks bright with Connor Buczek at the helm. As Quint Kessenich said during the semifinal, "I have to be honest, they [Cornell athletics] are going to have to open their wallet to keep him [Buczek]." I know that Kessenich is not the most popular person among Cornell fans, but I can't disagree with him here.
Maryland is one of those once in a generation teams (I hope...I obviously don't want to see them have the same unbeatable season next year). Congratulations to Coach Tillman, who went to a pretty good school himself.
However, Maryland's championship can't be considered legit until they play Notre Dame, at a date and location to be determined by the Pope himself.
Quote from: FallCreekI suspect that it will be a lot easier to recruit in the near future. I am going to guess that playing for Coach Buczek will be a draw given what he has done. He is only 10 or so years older than the 18+ year old players he is recruiting and had the credentials that will impress.
Thanks to all the seniors for a great year! LGR
Absolutely, I'm certain that every top recruit was watching on ESPN. The announcers praised the Cornell program and spoke highly of its storied history. Coach Buczek not only has a high Lacrosse IQ, but has academic credentials to match. He's the kind of coach I'd like my son to play for, but my son is 22 years older than Connor.

The USILA presents the Morris Touchstone Award (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._Morris_Touchstone_Award) to the coach of the year. Three Cornell head coaches have won it a total of five times (Moran 1971, 1977, 1987; Pietramala 2000; Tambroni 2009). Tillman has yet to win one.
The award isn't given until December at the men's lacrosse coaches summit. (see last year (https://guhoyas.com/news/2021/12/10/mens-lacrosse-kevin-warne-named-2021-usila-f-morris-touchstone-division-i-coach-of-the-year.aspx))

No. They dropped from #14 to #16. Cornell went from #10 to #2.
To quote Basil Fawlty, "What's the bloody point?"
Even if we won that last, all-important game I'd still say Maryland is the better team overall and deserving of #1 in the polls.

Absolutely. Check out MD's box scores for the season - ahead of PSU by 18-3 after 3, ahead of JHU by 22-4 after 3. We didn't do that kind of damage to the likes of Hobart and Lehigh, not to mention our one-goal squeaker over that very same PSU team.
In the movie version, a much, much younger Kirk Douglas plays Conner Buczek in the Cornell locker room: "Really nice moral victories are are born from great opportunity. And that's what you have here, tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game. If we played 'em ten times, they'd blow us out nine times. But not this game. Not today. Today, we hang around with them. Today, we keep it within 5 goals!" And then the team went out there and did it, which was definitely something of a Miracle.
I was confused at first, but then realized you probably mean Kurt Russell.

Are thinking of this quote that is far more memorable than either of the above?:
"If you lose this game, you'll take it to your f*&%#g graves. Your f*&%#g graves."
I don't recall if anyone has mentioned this before, but I highly recommend the recently published book, We Showed Baltimore: The Lacrosse Revolution of the 1970s and Richie Moran's Big Red. The author is Christian Swezey, who as best I can tell has no connection to Cornell. The book was published by Cornell University Press. The author did amazing research, interviewing dozens of former coaches, players from not just Cornell but also from Hopkins, Maryland, Hobart, etc. He was able to interview Richie as well.
This book also talks about the transition from wood to plastic lacrossse sticks during the early '70s, as well as the growth of lacrosse. But I especially loved reading about the rise of Cornell's program. For example, I never knew that Ned Harkness didn't take over the lacrosse program until Bob Cullen stepped down after a tragic plane crash in 1965. He was going to fly to scout Brown in a private plan flown by a Cornell professor, but at the last minute ended up sending his two assistants instead. The plane crashed on the way back and everyone on it was killed. Cullen couldn't bring himself to coach the team after that.
On a lighter note, there are some wild stories about the great Cortland State team in 1972 which beat Cornell and made a run in the NCAA tournament. They even rescheduled their graduation in order to host an NCAA semifinal game. More than 500 alchohol-fueled Cortland fans travelled by bus to watch them upset Navy in the rain in the quarterfinals.
I also learned how Dan Mackesey was originally going to attend Brown, and his father, a Cornell professor, didn't want him to go to Cornell. A lot of the big lax stars in the '70s had to work as dishwashers at frat houses to help pay their expenses. Also, McEneaney was a wild man on the lacrosse field, and was nearly kicked off the team on the eve of the 1977 title game.I had forgotten that he was the starting receiver for the football team and had a tryout with the NY Jets.
(The author is not paying me to plug his book. I just think this is a must-read for Cornell lax fans, especially if, like me, you were at school in the mid-70s).

Only want to see him win a title like French did. I dc if he has 10 assists with zero goals. I'm sure he feels the same way.
French played fewer games but the advantage of being able to score multiple points in overtime sessions. Such as against Maryland, 16-13 in OT, 1976, French had 7G 4A. PS Cornell was down 7-2 at the half.
Bill Tierney won six titles at Princeton, won one coach of the year award. Plus another at Denver. I mean, he picked up the slack for the Ivy League when things cooled down for Cornell after 1988.
I hope Buczek loves Cornell. Because offers from non-Ivy schools could approach $300,000.
maybe a new AD helps with this.. fund raise to keep coaches they want to stay. 300K in Ithaca goes a long way too

He's already the "Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men's Lacrosse." Does anyone (besides CB & AN) know what the base salary is for the job and what, if anything, the RMM endowment adds to it?
Similar questions for Jordan Stevens, who's the "Mario St. George Boiardi '04 Associate Head Coach OF Men's Lacrosse."
The names of both endowments suggest they came from multiple donors. We may be the ones who have to open our checkbooks to keep these coaches. :-/
We Showed Baltimore by Christian Swezey is a pretty good book, decently written, and as David Bilmes says, those of us who saw Moran's first three titles - um, the only three Cornell won -- and thought we had some insights into Cornell lacrosse still learned a lot about the players and Moran. Such as that Eamon McEneaney '77 was not the classic affluent Long Islander and in fact had to work as many as three jobs at Cornell to pay for school. Or that Cornell's competition to land Mike French '76 was not another school such as Maryland but the prospect of a good paying job in a GM factory. I also liked Swezey's discussion about how in 1971, first year of the NCAA tournament, the end of season games among the Big Five conflicted with the tournament games and the schools seriously considered telling the NCAA no thanks.
The book drifts many times to other schools and other games, perhaps because Christian Swezey is a Baltimore/Beltway guy (Loyola '94) and more likely because it makes the book interesting to enough non-Cornell fans to get it. Also, as any writer knows, it's harder to edit down than to write more.
He sourced a number of quotes and background material from us on the Cornell Daily Sun -- for which, it's nice to remembered and be helpful.
At the book's end, Swezey does a nice what-it-all-means summary of Moran's role as the point man for the transition from Baltimore lacrosse-dominant to New York as more dominant than Baltimore-area, then NY-NJ, and NY-NJ-Canada-New England and now all-North America as more important than the old guard. Our coach is a Cornell '15 from Ohio.
The skill: He brought in a new style of play, faster, more movement, nobody holds (supposed to hold) the ball more than 3 seconds.
The insight: Moran as a Long Island HS then Cornell coach saw what the Baltimore establishment didn't: Long Island (plus upstate) had vastly more HS lacrosse players competing (at a high level), and when Baltimore Inc. didn't recruit them by the 1970s, Cornell, Syracuse, Princeton (and North Carolina did).
Swezey notes more than a few times that in the pre-NCAA tournament era, the USILA poll winners were always the Big Five of lacrosse --Hopkins, Maryland, Virginia, Navy and Army -- except for a couple off years when Princeton won. Cornell went unbeaten under Harkness in 1968 and under Moran in 1970 the USILA era and (1970) finished fourth (fifth?) in the polls behind three once-beaten Johnny Reb schools. Many of which had little interest in playing Cornell.
Since the playoffs and Moran: 30 NCAA titles for the non Big-Five schools (below in CAPS), 20 for the traditional old guard, of which none have gone to Navy or Army:
School Titles
SYRACUSE 10
Hopkins 9 (none since 2007)
Virginia 7
PRINCETON 6
N CAROLINA 5
Maryland 4 -- 1973, 1975 ... 42-year-drought ... then 2017, 2022
CORNELL 3
DUKE 3
DENVER 1
LOYOLA 1
YALE 1
---------------
Navy 0 x 2
Army 0 x 0 (lost 17-16 to Cornell 1971 semifinals)
Only two title winners have more championship losses than wins:
Cornell 3-5
Maryland 4-12
Of course, the ACC mob counts all those Syracuse wins as ACC wins now.
Harkness's 1966 Cornell team also unbeaten. 1952 RPI team, coached by guess who, shared USILA title with Virginia.

Fixed, sorry,
clarified your post.
I not sure if Swezey mentioned it but one of the most amazing strings in sports was Syracuse's 22 straight national semifinals appearances from 1983 to 2004. Since then, three more 2006-2009, since then only one more in 2013. Syracuse does have the top recruit entering in the fall, M Joey Spallina, per Inside Lacrosse. (The IL list (https://www.insidelacrosse.com/recruiting/rankinglist/6) I see only lists the top ten not 100.) This will be the second year with Gary Gait as HC after 21 years under John Desko preceded by 67 years (back to 1931) under Roy Simmons and Roy Simmons Jr.
