Title: Randy Wilson Day
Post by: redice on March 06, 2022, 10:38:50 AM
Yes, it's that time of year again.

Happy Randy Wilson Day!   Mar 6, 1979 lives on in infamy!

And fitting that the rink scoreboard is named for Robbie Gemmell.  His goal will for me always be the ultimate example of when it pays to be in the wrong place at the right time.

The final part of the box score has an error.  Lance Nethery did NOT skate "end-to-end.  Henessey retrieved the puck near the Cornell cage & head-manned to Nethery, who shot the puck from near the Friars' blueline, for the goal.

I went by the game report posted to the prior Randy Wilson Day thread.

Seems minor when much of the world has been told Ken Dryden '69 backstopped the undefeated 1970 team and then had a village on Route 13 named in his honor.

I have cut any mention of the Nethery goal, which is clear from the box anyway.  The Randy Wilson note is there because it is not in the box.

If you look at the box score, you can see that Henessey asisisted on Nethery's goal.  To me, that confirms my version of the play.

Our children should have knowledge of the real story. Hopefully hearing it too often doesn't make them tell the nursing staff it's okay to pull the plug. Now kids can can search 'last second hockey goals" for a hundred on YouTube, at least half a dozen that include 'end-to-end rush up ice.' Or a hundred game-winning field goals from beyond half-court. Just not the Butler desperation shot that hit the rim and didn't beat Duke for the 2010 NCAA basketball title. Knowing Duke was the opponent made me a Butler fan for a day. The retirement of Coach K (shouldn't it be Coach Shih based on pronunciation?) is the main story in SI this month and I was glad to see that for all adulation laid on him, they also noted he was a jerk when it came to, repeatedly, scolding the Duke Daily for not being supportive of his basketball team. That's what happens when Krzyzewski came of age playing for Bobby Knight at Army.

Is there any way to get the source video?  I have linked to it several times and it has moved... several times.
