I was flipping through the media guide this afternoon (thanks Christine). I noticed that the 1990 Ironman award (Determination to overcome injuries) went to a Dr. Dan Yale. Since there's no "Yale" listed in the all-time roster, I assume there's some story behind this. Can anyone enlighten me?
Dr. Yale was the longtime team doctor (a role now held by Dr. Dirk Dugan). Dan was a wonderful man. He was an orthopedic surgeon in Ithaca, a true Cornell fan, and a really wonderful character. He also liberally gave of his time and professional expertise to a number of worthy causes around the country. Dan died of cancer far too young. The Lynah training room is dedicated to Dr. Yale.
I'm sure others around the program have lots of good memories of Dan Yale. He put me back together again a few times.
Peterg said it all about Dr. Yale. The team and the hockey program was devastated when cancer was diagnosed. He was a genuinely nice man, who cared a great deal about the hockey team. IIRC, the coaching staff arranged an on-ice tribute to him at one point and the team wore patches on the uniforms in memory of him.
