Title: Alumni in the Pros 2020-2021
Post by: jtwcornell91 on November 10, 2020, 07:28:44 AM
It's a new season (at least on the calendar) so we should have a new thread.
Title: Justin Krueger now with Lausanne HC
Post by: jtwcornell91 on November 10, 2020, 07:35:10 AM
Quote from: jtwcornell91So I just learned (via a facebook farewell message from the team) that Justin Krueger's time with SC Bern is at an end.  Apparently they announced back November that they wouldn't be renewing his contract after this season.  Apparently he's still a free agent.  Here's a recent article (in German) https://www.blick.ch/sport/eishockey/nla/papa-ralph-hilft-scb-verteidiger-krueger-auf-jobsuche-id15806551.html "Papa Ralph helps SCB Defenseman Krueger on the job hunt".  Some highlights: Justin Krueger played eight years for SCB and won three Swiss Championships, including last year.  "My heart belongs to Bern" he says, but as the article points out, his future is elsewhere.  With the NHL suspended, Sabres coach Ralph Krueger is acting as his son's agent, and he's in talks with two or three teams in Switzerland.  There's no talk of moving to Germany, so Siddharth and I will have to shelve our fantasies of him playing for Löwen Frankfurt or Adler Mannheim.  Justin and his wife Eva have two kids now, including a two-year-old daughter with (according to her father) a mean slapshot.

It seems Justin Krueger has crossed the Röstigraben and is now playing for Lausanne HC of the National League, the top professional league in Switzerland: https://lausannehc.ch/team/137-justin-krueger They've been playing in Switzerland before reduced capacities for a month or so, although they've now switched to ghost games with the onslaught of the second wave of COVID-19 in Europe.

As I read it, Barron is pretty good and has great promise. But he may not be good enough to play even fourth line wing. Except maybe the Rangers should trade him except some people say Barron is pretty good and has a lot of promise and he's cheaper, currently, than some other Rangers but it's too bad he's not a center, except maybe he could be.

He didn't make the active roster, but was assigned to the NYR taxi squad, rather than sent to Hartford (AHL).

Weidner and Cornell get a shoutout in the German press release: https://iserlohn-roosters.de/2021/01/19/joel-lowry-verstaerkt-die-roosters/

Iserlohn plays in the top-level DEL, where they finished 13th out of 14 teams last season.  I haven't paid much attention to them this year, since the DEL is split into divisions because of the pandemic, and Iserlohn is in the North while Mannheim is in the South.  (Frankfurt plays in the second-tier DEL2, although they aspire to be promoted soon.)

Jacob MacDonald '15 played 19 min. 41 sec. at D for the Avalanche last night.  He's now played in 3 games.  Both Cale Makar and Erik Johnson were out with injuries, so we'll see if Jacob can stay in the lineup when they return. For a guy who could hardly get much playing time his freshmen year, he's come a long way.

A crucial Rangers experiment is just getting started

https://apple.news/AKu3Y4J74Rq6WZSwKr8wn2Q

....Promising to further complicate the picture, the Rangers also have four recalls remaining. At least one more, if not all, will probably be used within the remaining eight games after Friday's matchup with the Flyers.

The first in line likely will be Morgan Barron, the 6-foot-4 center out of Cornell, who has 18 points (10 goals, eight assists) in 19 games with Hartford this season.

"I think Morgan has played extremely well," general manager Jeff Gorton said during his trade-deadline press conference. "We're hopeful to get him an opportunity or anybody that deserves it down there. We'll keep him down there for now, see how he does, but he's certainly opened our eyes with what he's done, so we're looking at that, along with some other players down there, too."

More on Barron from the Athletic:

Speaking of value, in terms of bang for buck, Barron has provided that through the first four NHL games of his career. He promised he would bring the bang, and he has, especially against Washington, where he seemed to be short-credited with three hits and dropped his gloves with T.J. Oshie, who wasn't interested. His four games have come against big teams, and the last three have been impressive. I don't see any way — barring a trade that involves him — that he's not on the next opening-night roster. Even when he just bumps guys, they stay bumped.

"I want to be a physical presence," Barron said. "That game (Wednesday against Washington) was definitely a physical game to get my feet wet. I'm just trying to go out there and finish my hits, and whatever happens after that happens. That's something the coaches have talked about, just going out there and being physical, finishing checks on the forecheck. That's ultimately going to lead to turnovers and creating opportunities off of that. ... I think that's going to be a crucial part of any game, especially if you watch playoff hockey. Almost every team that's successful has guys going in there and almost up and down the lineup has guys finishing hits. I think if that's something I can bring to my game, it's going to help elevate me to the next level."

Barron also scored his first NHL goal Wednesday.

"Definitely a little bit bittersweet," he said. "To get that goal is exciting. It's something you work towards for a long time. Just to get in the NHL and score a goal is exciting. It came a few minutes too late in the game ... but just to get that milestone checked off and get back to work today was a good feeling, for sure."

"I just like the way Morgan goes about his business," Quinn said before the game. "I think he's a guy that understands his role, he understands what his abilities are, he can skate, he's hard on the puck, and he's not intimidated. So a lot of good signs that he's shown so far."

He's not mentioned on this ECAC tweet either https://twitter.com/ecachockey/status/1394288167054942213 They obviously tried to pad the list including RPI's Jeremy Coupal who played a total of one game on the varsity and now is a video coordinator. They also state that 12 teams are represented, and I don't see a certain school in Schenectady.

...except that article is from last Tuesday, and Cole didn't get any ice time yesterday. But maybe he'll get the nod soon.
He was not on the roster as of yesterday; maybe there was a problem with his call-up?

I'd love him to get TOI.

He's on the team's roster webpage, but I don't know how official that is.

Bardreau is eligible to play, but 24 forwards are.  With many who have played this year having been healthy scratches recently (Zajac, Bellows, Dal Colle, Johnston), it's not likely he's in the first 16 from which to choose 12.

So, what's the full list of alumni who played at least 1 game in the NHL this year?

COL 1-8-9 Jacob MacDonald
CBJ 2-5-7 Riley Nash
PIT 2-2-4 Anthony Angello
NYR 1-0-1 Morgan Barron
CAR 0-0-0 Joakim Ryan

No goalies?

The NHL has a thing for tall goalies.  Our goalies, while excellent, don't meet the height limit to ride the roller coaster.

Which reminds me, apropos of nothing in particular - after watching "Miracle" for the eleventy-hundredth time this weekend, dss28 and I tracked down the actual 1980 broadcast of the US vs. USSR medal round game and watched the entire thing. The few snippets we got of Ken Dryden in the Disney film were not an aberration - he was a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad™ color commentator. Just awful. It's no wonder nobody hired him to do it again.

That said, he was one of the all-time great goaltenders, and a very nice guy when I met him. But UGH.

It takes a special kind of bad color commentating performance to bust in and clomp all over one of the greatest, most poetic, and most quoted play-by-play calls of all time. I hear Ken's clumsy  "unbe-LEEEV-uble" at the end of Al Michaels exalting "YES!" every. single. time.

And those tight smurf-blue turtlenecks. At least that was decidedly not Ken's fault.

Not gonna start a new thread.

Just watched the third period of the Canada - Finland women's game.  Brianne Jenner with the empty netter to clinch Canada's 5-3 win and also an assist on the 3rd goal.  Rebecca Johnston and Jill Saulnier got ice time, but didn't score (I believe).

Jamie Bourbonnais and Micah Zandee-Hart also on the roster, but I think they were healthy scratches

Micah i think is injured and technically no longer part of the roater for the tournament but still in contention for the olympic team roster.  Bourbonnais apparently had a terrible first period and got only 10 seconds in the 2nd period. I did see her somewhat in the 3rd but still very little.  Kristin O'Neill was a healthy scratch.

Jenner with another assist on Canada's first goal in the semi against Switzerland.  Johnston, Saulnier, and Bourbonnais all getting regular ice time, too.

Johnston scores Canada's fourth goal on the Power Play.

Final 4-0.

Canada vs USA tomorrow night for the gold.

FWIW she was listed at the 7th d-man in the semi, too, but she got a lot more ice time.

I only saw the second and third periods.  I did not see her...and I looked.  I suspect that after going down 2-0 after the first period, they shortened the bench a bit.

In fact, I didn't even see her during the celebrations and award ceremony although that was more likely due to the choices of the program's director at TSN.  They tended to keep the camera on a handful of star players.

I did see her during the celebration. She was on the ice for the celebration but she didnt get a single shift during the game. I think she was in the 3rd pairing for the very first game of the tournament but played badly in the first shift, benched during the 2nd and barely played in the 3rd period (all in the opening game). Then, she started getting listed at the 7th throughout the tournament.  I think she may need to regain the coach's trust quiet a bit. Im assuming 3 players (1 goalie and 2 skaters) are gonna get cut from the roster for the olympics team?

I was a grad student at Princeton so I've been paying attention to Sarah Fillier and Claire Thompson. They were getting a ton of ice time and media coverage. Thompson seemed like an awesome skater. I think they improved a ton. They were always good but I think they have really solidififed their standings within the national team.

It looks like Olympic rosters are 20 skaters and 3 goalies (vs. 22 and 3 at worlds), but there are a couple of centralized players (including Micah Zandee-Hart) who were not on the roster in Calgary.

The first pre-olympic "friendly" is here in Allentown in late October between the US and Canada.  I'm debating whether to go.  The covid vax rate here in the Lehigh Valley is pretty good (>66% of adults fully vaxxed).  But the Phantoms skew family-friendly, and I don't want to be around a lot of kids.

Please clarify, Roy.  Is that response because 66% isn't really that good, or because where you live in Cali isn't that high?

FWIW, now over 67%.  And that's actually % of people 10 years and over.  No idea what the % of actual "adults" is because PA doesn't display it that way.

Actually it includes 10 & 11 year olds.  When the vax was opened to 12 and up, PA chose to measure it in groups of 5 years, so they rounded it to 10 and up.

From what I can see the vax numbers are going up by about 0.1-0.15% each day. It's gonna take a while.

Hmmmm.  That might actually apply in a place like Florida or Texas.  In PA, the denominator is pretty steady.

Hmmmm.  That might actually apply in a place like Florida or Texas.  In PA, the denominator is pretty steady.

I've been through Central PA.  The Law of Large Numbers will do the rest.

Quote from: Jeff Hopkins '82.....The covid vax rate here in the Lehigh Valley is pretty good (>66% of adults fully vaxxed).....
Sigh:-/

Please clarify, Roy.  Is that response because 66% isn't really that good, or because where you live in Cali isn't that high?

FWIW, now over 67%.  And that's actually % of people 10 years and over.  No idea what the % of actual "adults" is because PA doesn't display it that way.

I sighed because we have such low expectations. I would hope for 90% and up everywhere. But if they including kids 10-12 then that is something to consider. It looks like that might knock it down about 5%. But still disappointing.

Vax rate is nice to know, but since people vax'd can still get the virus and can transmit the virus, knowing the prevalence of Covid is crucial. If Covid was nonexistent in the community, who cares about whether the person next to you is vax'd. But if it's rampant, the vax'd person next to you could be infected and give it to you.

That's why some virologists and public health experts feel the Rapid Test is so valuable. Unlike the PCR test it won't pick up the person with small amounts of virus. However it's very good at picking up people with enough virus in their oral-nasal pharynx to be transmissible.

If you have a negative test, you're not transmissible for at least 6-10 hours. Use of the rapid test is probably the best way to be sure large gatherings are safe.
