2021 Cornell lacrosse looks promising:
* Cornell finished the truncated regular season unbeaten, 5-0
* Cornell ranked 2nd in final Inside Lacrosse and USILA polls behind Syracuse
* Cornell beat Syracuse 17-16 in the NCAA title game (per Christian Swezey sim)
* Jeff Teat returns for a fifth year (will not follow Cornell coach Peter Milliman to Hopkins)
* Top 4 scorers returning (5 games played, 2 ppg or more)
1 Jeff Teat 27pts - Sr (5th year) in 2021
2 John Piatelli 23 - Sr
3 Jonathan Donville 20 - Sr
4 Michael Long 19 - So
[s]5 Cooper Telesco 14[/s]
[s]6 Connor Fletcher 11[/s]
* Connor Buczek '15 elevated to head coach after 5 years as assistant. About the same age as when Dick Bertrand '70 was elevated to hockey head coach, the difference being Buczek had 5 seasons to adjust to being a coach, where Bertrand came late to Cornell and went from being team captain to HC.
* Delbarton AA attack CJ Kirst coming to Cornell (from NJ Delbarton, same as Michael Long)
* Goalie Chayse Ierlan is back for junior year
* Faceoff isn't bad
* Princeton, #3 in the polls, loses AA attackman Michael Sowers to Duke for his fifth year.
It would be good to see a tentative 2021 schedule including who we're playing early in the season from outside the Ivies.
Now, we just have to have on-campus instruction spring semester 2021.

With Petrakis coming off a strong Freshman year and Graham having some experience, Psyllos looks like another quality option. Also with the new faceoff rules, some guys will adapt better than others, so you need a few options.

No motorcycle grip allowed and FOGOs must work from a standing position (knee can't be on the ground). TD Ierlan says it will have to be a new approach for him.
Some stories suggest a good team will win only 60% of faceoffs in 2021, vs. TD Ierlan's 75%. More groundballs, fewer clean wins. We'll see.
According to Very Rusty Red on the Fanlax forum there are 3 of last year's seniors besides Teat coming back. He raised the query does anyone know who they are? Anyone on the Elynah site know?
well its not that hard to see who is still a student in the registry.. teat still is so thats a good sign.

What about a summer semester for spring sports?
baseball plays well after most schools graduate. why no lacrosse..
still lets just see where stuff is in a month before making rash decisions..
the ivy could say no OC games and that would buy them another month or so as well.

really wonder if Ivy is gonna play this year.. no real news at all.
should go to pods and play 2 games every weekend no OC games and start later in the season if they need to.. cut down on travel and away time and ramp up testing if they have too. cornell could easily add the few extra tests they need to do sports, most likely the others could too.
they aren't going to pods for *lacrosse* my friends
not good news that Yale is cancelling.. not sure why the Ivies dont allow a season after seeing how it has gone since fall for the big schools around the country. Cornell already testing more than many of these schools that are playing now.. play IVY only H/A schedule and start in march/april or play 2 games a weekend Fri/Sun a few weeks and they could have a season.
The article on Inside Lacrosse seems to indicate it was for lack of players. 40 players withdrew from school leaving them with only 8 players.

yeah.. but its also because they didnt think they were gonna play that the players all bailed before the semester started.. games already started and we dont even have a schedule so unless the ivy is gonna play only league games its doubtful right now..
which comes first the ASUN in the NCAA with an AQ or the IVY plays again..
It's early February. Princeton now Duke All-America Michael Sowers and the Blue Devils make ESPN highlights. Why do the Ivy presidents work to disadvantage athletes when it comes to Covid-19, as well as the ones smart enough to graduate in < 4 years and would like to play while in grad school?

From Inside Lacrosse:
As Cornell was set to begin instruction for the Spring 2021 term on Monday, Big Red head Connor Buczek sent a letter to supporters of Cornell Lacrosse notifying recipients that the team's status still has no definitive answer, but that a group of players will take a leave of absence in order to play another season at Cornell.
Supporters of Cornell Lacrosse,
I know many of you are anxiously awaiting a decision from the Ivy League regarding spring sport competition. Unfortunately as we begin classes today for the spring semester, there is still no definitive answer. With that in mind, we had to have discussions with our team to set expectations for the spring and help them understand all possible options.
Due to the uncertain nature of this semester and what our team will be able to do in terms of practice, development and competition, there will be a group of players that will take a leave of absence from school for the spring. Ultimately, the odds did not indicate that competition was going to be likely, so we allowed each individual family to make the best decision for them regarding enrollment this spring. The leave of absence guarantees these young men the ability to play another season at Cornell, a place and program that means so much to all of us.
As difficult as this situation has been on all members of our Cornell lacrosse family, I am incredibly proud of the bondedness and selflessness of our players. Collectively, they have handled the impacts of the pandemic with incredible grace and togetherness. Through countless conversations with our team, their families, and alums, it has been a pleasant reminder that it's the people in our program that makes Cornell lacrosse so special. We look forward to the next time we get to make you all proud by our efforts on the field, but until that time comes, you can rest assured that our group is upholding the standards of Cornell lacrosse in every way they can.
Best wishes to you and your families. Better days to come.
Best,
Connor

the fact the ivies are sitting into Feb and not made any decision on this is just bad. Kids would have had to make the financial decisions and class decisions weeks ago.

Any idea if these are all seniors? Could be all underclassmen who just don't want to lose a year, rather than seniors who might otherwise have played their last serious lacrosse game.
Ivy to allow 1 yr of grads students now for next yr.. big deal i think
There's been discussion of widespread vaccine availability by March. Maybe we'll see some Cornell lacrosse in April and May.
They should have made this decision a long time ago! Some players have already transferred to other schools.

Serious question here- I don't see the optics problem. One of the western conferences played hockey in a "bubble" around christmas IIRC. What's the difference whether the institutions pay the bill or a wealthy alum does? What am I Missing?

Maybe missing that there are many other men's and women's spring sports as well as non-athletics extracurricular activities that are not happening as a result of Covid.
had they accepted the offer they might have also gotten a few other people to step up and do the same thing for other sports.. who knows if the kids would have bought into it either.
The posted roster now shows a bunch of people no longer there (like incoming frosh CJ Kirst.)
Similarly, some players that didn't appear in the fall are now on the roster - like Jeff Teat.
Not sure how to interpret all of this.
I interpret this to be trouble. Plain and simple. I don't want to focus on whether the decision was correct or not, but more on what the result of all this will be when the dust settles. Ivy sports may never recover. The fact that Yale is down to 7 players on the Lacrosse team, just a couple of years after winning the national championship, is extremely concerning. We all were proud of the fact that the Ivys, and our school, proved that you could field teams that were national championship contenders while still prioritizing academics. The transfers out of Yale would suggest that Elite players just want to play on Elite teams and won't stay just for the academics. Obviously there are plenty of schools that provide excellent academics without the attitude towards athletics that the Ivys project. This has always been the case but we now have a whole new level of disregard compared to other schools. The impact on our ability to attract great coaches will also be a casualty. We've been lucky in hockey, with Schafer, but not in lacrosse. And now, why would a top-notch coach want to be here after the Ivys have prioritized almost everything else over athletics. Why come here.
nothing stopping kids from transferring back into Yale though..

Great points. It could take a years for Ivy schools to develop into title contenders again. I think it will happen with Cornell lacrosse eventually. We have a really good coaching staff now. And schools with deep traditions usually bounce back in college sports.

Iirc, yale was down to seven players because the best majority of the team had just not enrolled for that semester. They didn't all transfer out many were reported to be taking internships or other things and effectively treating as a leave of absence.

Because how many of the 74 NCAA D1 programs are more top-notch than Cornell? Five, ten? Better could be better salary or it could be better place to be a coach.
On pay, FWIW, Brown coach Lars Tiffany jumped to Virginia for a salary of $165,000 (plus $115,000 incidental income plus a $25,000 first year bonus). Outgoing and long-time coach Dominick Starsia had been making $150,000 salary plus $100,000 incidental income. $150K for a Cornell head lacrosse coach seems possible but not the incidental income thing. I'm not sure how much life is better at 250 than 150.
It's hard to know how much money former Cornell lax coach Jeff Tambroni makes in Happy Valley. Penn State is a public university but the school has long masked coaching salaries and so far gotten away with it. According to this story in the Centre Valley Times, written by Cornell grad Sarah Paez in 2019, the top 25 earners outside the schools officers (such as the president, $826K) in 2018 were the head football coach at $1.61M, the AD Sandy Barbouur at $728K, football assistant Brent Pry at $694,000. and a bunch of doctors at $1.34M down to $602,000. So Tambroni makes less than that. Actually the top earners included ex-President Graham Spannier, forced out in 2011 (football sex scandal fallout) and still on the payroll at $600K per through 2017. https://www.centredaily.com/news/local/education/penn-state/article233258309.html
On working conditions, Cornell has tradition on its side, a winning history in lacrosse and hockey, it's a nice place to live, there are first rate schools for your kids in Ithaca and Lansing, and decent if not stupendous facilities. It's one of the top 10 jobs in college lacrosse and if you're a coach looking to move up, how many of those top jobs come available each year, 2, maybe 3? Cornell probably holds the record for most lax head coaches in the decade 2021-2020, but that's an outlier. Princeton is the other Ivy school that could be considered a top ten lax school in a combination of salary, facilities, and awesome alumni support especially the cadre of graduated athletes.
An Ivy coach should be annoyed about sports being shut down, but 500,000 dead from Covid is not your usual year. I believe the quote one-time grad student eligibility thing for 2021-2022 will become permanent the following year, or year after that.

Quote from: Inside LacrosseThere's been a lot uncertainty for Jeff Teat over the past year. What's certain is he just flat-out loves lacrosse and wants to play it as long as possible. "I graduate in May," he said in an interview with IL on Friday. "And then I'm full board with lacrosse going from there."
While other top-end players in the Premier Lacrosse League Draft conversation have been fixtures of highlights and awards lists and rankings this spring, Teat's been out of sight. The Cornell senior, like most in the Ivy League, hasn't been able to play competitively since COVID shut down the sport last spring. ...
With Jared Bernhardt's pro lacrosse-playing future likely delayed [Maryland A, opted to play college football fall 2021], the conversation of who will be No. 1 has been focused on Michael Sowers and Teat, two players whose paths have crossed and have mirrored each other over the years. Teat was No. 1 in the 2016 class of freshman, IL's first from Canada. Sowers was No. 10. Both became forces in the Ivy League and showcased a level of vision and feeding ability advanced beyond their years — Teat's built on box deception and skill and Sowers' speed and quickness.
I couldn't fine a 1971 lacrosse thread, and I didn't want to start one.
But here's an article about Cornell's role taking lacrosse from a parochial "Big 5" to the big time (https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/50-years-of-ncaa-men-s-championships-in-1971-a-chance-to-crown-a-true-champion/57935?utm_source=Inside+Lacrosse+Fastbreak+Newsletter&utm_campaign=5784df03b4-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_06_06_12_34_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_92eedbe203-5784df03b4-56173245).
Speaking of which, this year seems a bit like deja vu all over again. I think an appropriate sign or t-shirt at this year's lacrosse championships would be "If everyone can't play, you can't win shit!"

Excellent article.
Had no idea the rivalry with Syracuse went so far back.

Ned: 66-68
Richie: 69 and on
66, 68, 70 were unbeaten seasons.

In Latin, it would be seen erudite.
The title game was at Hofstra. Homecoming for Richie Moran, who had coached HS on the Guyland, and much of the Cornell team. The real title game was the week before, at Army. It was a double-header. Richard Nixon was on campus in the morning, lacrosse was in the afternoon, and it West Point issued a press pass that turned out to have access to both press areas. Cornell got the last goal in a 17-16 game. The title game over Maryland, Moran's alma mater, was a 12-6 almost romp.
Me recalling that game for a Cornell undergrad now is like some alter kaker in 1971 waxing rhapsodic about a Cornell sports event of 1921. It's easier for the old farts to look back than for undergrads to imagine it. 1971 was also the year the crew came from nowhere to win the IRA.

Sudden-death overtime still sucks. TV time is so tight you can't play a 4-minute period? Maybe we're biased because Cornell outscored Maryland 4-1 in OT in 1976's title game but it was Maryland that got the first goal.
Saturday, 3 of 4 NCAA D1 quarterfinal games went to OT.
Duke 10, Loyola 9
Maryland 14, Notre Dame 13
NC 12, Rutgers 11
Virginia 14, Georgetown 3
Semifinals are
1 NC vs. 4 Virginia
2 Duke vs. 3 Maryland
... be prepared for some BS stories, "The South Takes Back College Lacrosse." Just so long as they don't count all the Yankees on their teams.
Did you just royal we?
I approve.

I think so. Don't have time to back this up with data. But offhand it's hard to think of a non-Ivy D1 team that didn't play this spring.

It is a bit odd that they do sudden death in lax but not basketball. Of course if you did non-sudden-death OT in lax you'd need to impose an automatic stall warning or shot clock on any team that took the lead.

Better to have two four-minute overtime periods...as it used to be. Lacrosse has a shot clock.
Attendance for semifinals at Rentschler Field in East Hartford on rainy, cold day in CT was about 13,000. I don't live that far away, but have no desire to watch any of these teams play in person, even if weather was nicer. Forecast better for title game on Monday. Not having Syracuse, Cornell or any other northern teams in Final Four had to hurt attendance.

And Syracuse having a bad year made worse by player Chase Scanlon getting arrested in a domestic violence case, the team saying they didn't want Scanlan back, and Scanlan getting suspended / off the team at least once.
4-seed Virginia wins its second straight title, 17-16, over 3-seed Maryland, Terps coached by John Tillman '92. Apropos of the hockey thread about how much Mike Schafer makes, Tillman's contract has him salaried at $341,000 through 2022.
Small consolation for NYS / upstate NYS lacrosse that D2 title won (again) by LeMoyne of Syracuse and D3 by RIT, its first NCAA title in anything. (Remember they sneaked into the Frozen Four a couple years back, then the wheels fell off the bus.)
Now Duke ex-Princeton Michael Sowers one of three first-team All-Americas at attack. Duke relied heavily on transfers, maybe more than any other D1 team. Coach John Danowski quoted as saying broadly that the team had trouble meshing this year. Duke got blown out in the semis by Maryland, 14-5. (Virginia got by NC 12-11.)

John Desko is 63, career record of 258–86 (.750) over 22 seasons, 5 NCAA titles but the last 12 years ago in a come-from behind overtime win. IIRC, Syracuse had something like 22 consecutive final four appearances under Simmons then Desko. But the last final four was 2013.
Gait's final game as head coach of the Syracuse women's team was a 16-10 loss in the title game to BC, which also made the three previous title games, all losses.

Jeff Teat pro debut Friday. https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/jeff-teat-to-make-pll-debut-friday-at-homewood-field/58120
Quote from: Inside LacrosseThe No. 1 pick in the 2021 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft, Cornell attackman Jeff Teat, will make his rookie debut for the Atlas LC on Friday night [6/23/21] at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field as they take on the Whipsnakes at 8 p.m. The game will air live on NBC Sports Network.
It'll be Teat's first competitive action since March of 2020. IL's No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2016, Teat was granted a fifth year of eligibility waiver in June 2020, but the Big Red did not play this spring. Teat did not transfer in an effort to play one final college lacrosse season and despite being out of sight (but not out of mind, as Matt Kinnear profiled in April), Atlas coach Ben Rubeor selected Teat No. 1 overall, ahead of Michael Sowers, JT Giles-Harris and TD Ierlan.
Love to see if the quality of Atlas LC's other attackers means Teat has some freedom to maneuver. He was so amazing freshman year, before he got a good or a bulky defender draped all over him.
I just watched the second game of Teat's PLL debut -- Cannons [Buczek, Pulver] v. Atlas [Teat]. Jeff's first game was Friday night and he was mediocre, to put it kindly. Not all his fault -- his first game since March 2020, only one practice with this team and it was clear his teammates were not ready for his style of team play. They didn't drop his precision passes inside, they didn't seem to realize he was making passes....
Today was different -- Jeff seemed more willing to take a shot. In fact, he tied the PLL record for goals in a game with 7 goals on 11 shots [10 of which were SOG]. He also managed 2 assists. I am not sure at what point Cannon came up with a strategy to defend him but for most of the game he drew Pulver, I assume because he was the defender who had the most experience covering him. It didn't stop Teat but it may have slowed him down a little.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, Coach Buczek scored 3 goals, prompting several mentions from the commentators. Tremendous free publicity for Cornell lacrosse as they noted often that the Cornell head coach clearly could play the game, was a great coach [noting he and Jeff worked out together, etc.], should be an inspiration to young players. Considering that Paul Rabil, Lyle Thompson and Brodie Merrill were also on the field, it was a good day press-wise for Cornell lacrosse.
Atlas won 18-17. Given that Jake Pulver had a goal and 2 of the scores were 2-pt goals, the Cornell players were responsible for one-third of the total goals scored in the game.

Does his pro debut mean no more Cornell?
Yes; no more Cornell. He has graduated.
Damn... i thought he was staying for one more year as a graduate student. Good for him though.

His success there will reflect well on the Big Red, and maybe it will help with recruiting.

Jeff Teat's time at Cornell seems an unfinished story. Fabulous freshman year, better sophomore year, then defenses learned to closely mark him junior year, and senior year was truncated at five games. The expectation (okay, mine) was that he might depart Cornell as the best player ever. Not that he owes us or Cornell anything. He helped bring Cornell so close to the winner's circle.
Jonathan Donville, who would have been the #3 returning scorer if Cornell had played this past year, heads to Maryland for a grad year (2021 was Donville's senior year.)
Quote from: LacrosseBucketJust a day after reports surfaced that the Maryland Terrapins had landed a trio of grad transfers in former Cornell midfielder Jonathan Donville and former Villanova attackman Keegan Khan, as well as defenseman Owen Prybylski [Villanova], former Johns Hopkins attackman Owen Murphy announced that he will be joining the Terrapins next season.
Jeff Teat, 4 games into the Premier Lacrosse League season with the Atlas is averaging 5.5 points per game. Goals are 60% of his scoring vs. 43% at Cornell.

I know there's been a long thread on Schafer salary. How about one on pro lacrosse all-star salary?

I fast forwarded to his scoring plays on the Peacock channel. He's very comfortable in this league, like he's tossing it around his backyard.

Agreed. The league that made him uncomfortable was the NCAA after freshman year. Covid really screwed over Cornell hockey (M, W) and MLax fans. Also 600,000 people who died from it.
