Title: Superstition
Post by: RedAR on April 13, 2003, 04:49:35 PM
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but after the warmups on Thursday, Pegararo was NOT the last player off the ice.  A UNH player (not sure who) kept on sticking around, and Pegararo finally just headed into the locker room.

I know, it's all just superstition, but just thought I would note that.

Well I bet he remembers that moment, and even though it IS just superstition, I wouldn't be surprised if, next season, he makes sure he is ALWAYS the last to leave the ice...no rock/paper/scissors either :-}

Damnit, that and the new tube of toothpaste I opened up Thursday morning musta blown our streak ;-). I mean each alone doesn't seem significant, but when you put the two together...  ::nut::

I got a hair cut on Wed for the first time since the loss to Colgate. I actually debated not getting it cut for superstitious reasons. Guess I should have heeded those thoughts.

Now, now, we all know my Mardi Gras beads are to blame for Thursday's loss.  ::nut::

Actually, I washed both my jerseys before the game.  That's what did us in.

Hmm, I played both national anthems on my computer before the game (yes, I actually do that), and we STILL lost. How can that be?!

Well, I'm glad everyone else has a hand in this - I thought we lost because I didn't wear my Red Sox hat that I'd been wearing since Albany...

I think the reason why we always have the same person come in last is so Schafer knows when everybody is in the locker room. While Pegoraro may personally prefer to be the final person off the ice, I don't believe that's the point.
Title: Re: Superstition
Post by: RedAR on April 14, 2003, 10:28:59 AM
I disagree.  If it was just for the sake of Schafer knowing if the entire team was in the locker room, then Pegararo would only need to be the last Cornell player off the ice.  On many occasions, he stuck around on the ice, waiting for all the opposing players to get off the ice before he would.

Unless, of course, Schafer needs to know that all the opposing players are in their locker room as well.

That was my point. He may have a personal preference to be the last person on/off the ice. That is why he opted to be the last Cornell player off the ice.

I have to testify....

I've seen us play UNH four times.

1978 ECAC Tourney
1979 Regular Season
2002 NC$$ regionals
2003 NC$$ Semis

You look up the scores.  It's not pretty.   ::help::

In addition, JTW and I forgot to listen to tack 64 of Live at Lynah on our way to Buffalo, as I have on my way to every game this season.  (The losses to Maine and Dartmouth were the only other games for which I did not do so.)  I apologize.

I've never washed my #17 Karam jersey and frankly, it is getting really nasty.  Let's just say that calling it home white would be charitable at best and that home grey would be much closer to the truth.  Mind you, I'm not superstitous, just lazy.

Does anybody know what chlorox does to the red stripes and letters?

Needless to say, you are banned from the next UNH-Cornell hockey game.  :-D

Whatever you do, DO NOT use the regular Clorox (tm).  Color Clorox, on the other hand, might be OK.  As the instruction says, always test for the colorfastness on a small patch of the fabric...(I know, I am sounding like your mother now) ;-)

I just realize that

I was flying to Taipei when Cornell won the first-round ECAC games in Ithaca
I was in Hawaii when Cornell beat Harvard in OT for the ECAC championship
I was in Venice, Italy when Cornell beat BC in 2OT to advance to the Frozen Four

BUT, I was back in CA and not traveling when Cornell played UNH.  Darn it, if I had known, I would have jumped on a plane that day...:-D

See, Tom.

If I can't go to any UNH games anymore, we're going to have to make sure you're on a plane whenever we're playing them.

You'll be flying in circles, but you don't get to listen to the game.   :-P

That reminds me of watching Game 6 of the 1986 World Series in the TV room in one of the HighRises on North Campus.  There was this one guy who had left the room one time when Mookie Wilson was up, and Mookie got a hit.  So each time Mookie got up to bat, we made this guy leave the room, including the famous last at-bat.  We actually had to force him to leave during that last inning and held the door shut, with him banging on it, as Mookie hit that grounder down the first base line.  Hey, it worked (but he sure was pissed that he missed it).

Pegararo is very superstitious.  He is not only the last one off the ice, but tips his helmet back and taps the boards as he comes off the ice every time.

The only reason he got off the ice when he did was because the referee waved his arm saying "Get off the ice" and so Pegararo went into the locker room.

This happened earlier in the season on the road (can't recall which game) and Pegararo went right off because the team can be given a penalty for players remaining on the ice for a lengthy period of time.

Hockey players tend to be the weirdest of athletes when it comes to superstitions.  Who knows what superstitions they have behind closed doors?!?!

No, hockey players aren't superstitious.  :-P

Watch Eric Lindros before a period starts (Next year!!!  :-D )  He goes up to the goalie and raps his stick against his leg pads eight or nine times.

I remember one of the Flyers who when the teams came out right before the anthems would stand like a statue behind the goal and lean on the net while all the other players did a lap or two around the zone.

Rumor had it that Phil Esposito wore the same T-shirt in which he scored his first goal under his sweater for his entire career!

And wasn't there a commercial where a trainer accidentally washed Lindros' "lucky shirt" with a pair of red socks making them come out pink?  I forget what it was for.  Detergent maybe?

Ray Bourque would always skate over to the goalie before the 3rd period and cross him with his stick (father, son, holy spirit - not cross CHECK).  At least, he always did it with the Bruins - not sure if he still did it with Colorado.

By the way, I might as well join in here:

Golfing! (Rangers)  Golfing! (Islanders)  Golfing! (Bruins)

Another year of the Thornton era down the drain.  Thanks, Jeremy Jacobs... ::flipd::

Here's something I've wondered about ever since I noticed that Tim Vanini '91 always was the last player off the ice -- what happens if there are two players on the same team who have that superstition?  Is there a pecking order, where the more senior player gets that privilege?  What if the two players are in the same class?

Ouch.  Are you a Montreal fan?  Devils fan?  Or just someone rooting for Neiwendyk?  If the answer is C, then I'll let it slide... :-P

Tampa Bay stayed in a hotel before their HOME playoff game tonight, because they won two on the road after staying in a hotel before each of those games.  ::rolleyes::
